no why? cause its not my toy? who knows if we will do another collab? What do I have to gain from this? You would be shocked (maybe not) how much time I spend scouring ebay. I find it fun. Not to mention I search "mishka" multiple times a day.

Riverdancer can be shilled beyond belief, if someone can't stand to lose an auction they're an easy mark. That winner is easily spotted, should change names at this point.

I could list a few ways to potentially gain and all would explain taking such delight in clearly manipulated auctions.

You are completely coherent when hyping the toy (inflating the bubble) and completely incoherent when asked to explain the odd joy you take in these absurd flipper auction results.

Josh, to be honest, I don't think me and Greg have any power in making people pay this much for a toy. I mean if we did, we would have our own toy company and I wouldn't be working a shitty day job. We amuse ourselves by finding out what people would pay for things. I'm just pissed my name wasn't in that auction. More power to the flippers if there are people out there willing to pay for it. I have my suspicions as to who it is but I would never mention names as this is really their prerogative.

Come on Greg. You are an intelligent business man. Try being logical when people are curious and ask questions. You don't need to go so extreme. People aka fans are just curious.

odd joy? Its odd that people will pay this much. Its less of joy and more astonishment. Also like I explained earlier its all relative since I like the toy weather its $100 or $1000. I could care less what people resell them for. I wish Shigeru would make the release 100 pcs so everyone that wanted could get one, and then people that dont want to pay full retail price can pay discounted price when he has to reduce them after they dont sell out.

Fans a curious? I think its pretty self-explanatory. There are 10 figures Worldwide of a very popular figure. Trust me, I got emails about this figure from collectors not on this message board and no where NEAR this thread. If you forget a lot of kaiju blogs posted about this figure and people wanted it.

The fans are curious about Ebay results and beg for links to suspect auctions?

If a toy would have ended at $433 and a zero feedback bidder takes it to $1375, then the retailer posts a link in triumph, it just seems ... wierd.

Lots of retailers would have the opposite reaction if this was their exclusive; perhaps others see it as a badge of honour.

Personally I hate this toy. It's just a personal preference and no disrespect to those here who love it. It looks like some highschool kid sculpted it, and despite claims to the contrary it is being market manipulated and hyped. I think if the creators/sellers of it really wanted to dispell hype around it they should give away their next version. Just give it away...for free. I'd respect their master plan a lot more then. Over and out...

I don't think there are taste makers setting prices or popularizing figures. It's obvious plenty of senior members have chimed in with their dislike for the Nag. The gorilla JU figure gets stupid money on the secondary market there's a 3 page thread. There's not even an active Bemon or Anraku thread, and they fetch stupid money. I don't think this thread, or Mishka are the cause of Nag prices, if anything this thread has probably turned off people who were into the Nag when it was unveiled. To me this thread is entertainment and I don't take it too seriously, not one thing posted in this thread aside from pictures of Nag toys alters my opinion on them.

How does that make sense? Then you would have people crying that they didn't get one for free. Even that in itself would be seen as a marketing hype tool. I can see someone posting: "Oh he just gave it away so he can cause a feeding frenzy, just another hype tool." We all do this for fun. We don't make money off of flippers. All that time and effort going into doing the Coop show was all volunteered hard work. I hung the art the late into the previous night with Greg and Skinner was our witness. I didn't get paid to help set up that show, and frame my art. Coop paid his own way to come to NYC and all the costs to frame his art. Greg and his crew hosted the event, made up flyers, shirts and posters most of which is still sitting at the shop. You can't dispel hype especially if it's generated by haters fueling controversy. Let's face it, controversy sells. There's no way of ever satisfying that.

Lots of retailers would have the opposite reaction if this was their exclusive; perhaps others see it as a badge of honour.

I don't think it'd weird, here's why:
-Bidder bid a crazy fucking price in the first place
-Seller knew others went for more said "fuck it, shill this!" OR another buyer said "Man, I'll pay more because other's have went for so much more I'm stupid!"
-Retailer posts to discuss and is amused by this

It doesn't need Greg "hyping" the auctions cause we all knew anyway. He just brought it up for discussion.

I think other retailers would be equally amazed that something they sold/made/participated in making went that high that fast BUT would have played the "I'm disgusted and sad about this" card in an attempt to water down fires of hype building and to show they're not "down" with that. A PR move, even if it wasn't a totally up front and thought out PR move it'd be one none the less.

I don't know what anyone's real feelings are. Greg posted he's just amazed at it, not happy or down about it (unless I misread?) and just thought it'd make good conversation, which it kind of is doing right?

I'm much more ambivalent than a hater. The thread is a way to waste time and also kind of entertaining.

If it was about hate I'd ignore the thread entirely since Joel is right about controversy and hype driving sales at retail and the secondary market.

Here's a recent post from Brian Flynn which doesn't come across as PR or card playing:

brianflynn wrote:
To clarify further (for Evom or anyone else) - we view this board and collectors here as much more of a community than just a place to talk. In doing so, we try to help out our fellow collectors as much as possible.

In the case of the lucky bags, lots of people missed out on the opportunity to get a bag. Conversely, a lot of the people who got bags did not want everything contained in the bag. Most everyone then passed on the goodwill in the BST by offering the things they did not want out of their bags at roughly the retail equivalent instead of heading to ebay for top dollar. In doing so, everyone wins, and usually that goodwill comes back when you miss something later on. In the case of the Lee custom in question, it is perfectly fine that it is "not your thing", but the negative reaction is due to the inflated price on the bay compared to the purchase price vs. offering it up on the board to the other collectors at a fair price first. As someone who is new you have less of a relationship with the folks here, I understand that this may not be as obvious as it could be, but it does actually work out, and you will find that folks will be eager to help out one another for the fun and love of the hobby, and far less about the relative "worth" or "rarity" of the toys. If you don't want it, one of your friends most certainly does. By setting it up with a high start price on ebay, essentially puts the profit motive in front of your friends. As hard as it may seem to see, that is what we are really trying to do on the board -treat each other as friends and level the playing field.

Just a way of collecting to think about that is not reflected in other places as much.

My main point is I don't think there's some secret hype-machine running all of this. I really get the feeling that it's being done for fun. I think it SEEMS like there's something fishy because people are LOOKING for something fishy. But logically none of it really fits unless LS (who's kinda got a large amount of truth-telling clout and respect) and Greg (who seems to have less due to his less-then-accepted sense of humor but is backed by the good diplomat LS) are totally lying to us along with Alice, mondocoyote and COOP.

Anyway, I'm just saying I think there's nothing more than a case of bad buyers going nuts. Not a systematic hype machine. Or maybe I'm a sucker, but then again I've never paid more than retail for a Nag and hope not to go much further over that (need me a 2 facer though UGH! I have some OK trade bait wink wink MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAWRONGSECTIONIKNOW! 8) )

Controversy attached to this figure was never for a second generated by "haters." It began with the creator of the figure (remember the pseudo "controversial" foot stamps?) and was perpetuated by others who may or may not have a vested interest in it prior to the boutique crew's use of this thread to perpetuate hype, genuine enthusiasm, and pseudo-controversy. The considerable amount of defensive posturing around the figure has only fueled what are probably misperceptions about the hype .... at least to some extent (the conspiracy theory angle.)

Blaming people who are discussing the ongoing questionable chain of events of generating controversy and being "haters" is a little disingenuous, dontcha think? :)

Just for bad measure, here's some real hate:
