Post Re: comics?
sadly i don't read as many comics as i used to, but was excited to hear about this today...

Years ago, I wrote a brief run on the DC Vertigo horror comic JOHN CONSTANTINE: HELLBLAZER. Brief, because I wrote a horror story therein called SHOOT. SHOOT was about schoolyard slayings in the United States. It was completed before Columbine happened, but scheduled to appear not long after. The regime at DC Comics at the time decided that it could not be released in its completed form. I refused to go along with the changes they wanted to make. They decided not to publish the book at all. I quit.

I remember that, at the time, someone telling me that the stance was that Paul Levitz would not release the book so long as he was running DC.

It never occurred to me that a new regime would feel differently.

"Vertigo has a long history of publishing thought provoking stories that resonate whether they’re horror, crime, war, western, fantasy, urban memoir, science fiction or reality based.

So why not dig through the archives and bring some of them back? Welcome to VERTIGO RESURRECTED – a series of one-shots and specials geared to do just that-embrace history and stories that connect with the present day activities of our favorite protagonists, antagonists and creators.

“Shoot,” Warren Ellis’s much-talked about, but never published, HELLBLAZER story involving schoolyard killings leads this mega-sized VERTIGO RESURRECTION special.

Also included are rarely seen tales exploring the disturbing depths of horror, war, romance and science fiction by Brian Azzarello, Grant Morrison, Garth Ennis and artists Jim Lee, Phil Jimenez, Bernie Wrightson, and others. Cover by Tim Bradstreet.

VERTIGO RESURRECTED #1 On Sale October 20 / 96 pages / $7.99"

Detroit Metal City are the best figures released as revoltechs. Hands down.
Who is the band playing in DMC? Spoke to a geek a few weeks ago who had seen
Metalpocalypse on tour. Mastadon opened. He unabashedly said that Metalpocalypse (who are the producers of the show?) absolutely killed Mastodon, they were great live.

Oh yeah comics...

Alright I bought that piece of smut 'X-Women' drawn by Milo Manara, written by Chris Claremont. Can't think of anything else to say really. Either buy it now, or forget it came out later. (Manara can draw the hell out of a womans' ass, phew).
New King City, good, if not a little bit filler. Brandon seems more interested in clever puns (which I endorse) than moving the plot along. Great use of cats in those comics.
Finally read 'Ball Peen Hammer' which is a sneaky little graphic novel... or is it a novella? As a short story, its pretty spooky.

I enjoyed "X-Women" for the goofy fun that it is, but what I'm really psyched for is the new Wonder Woman. That is the one character at DC that defies strict continuity and it looks like they're doing it again. These could be some big changes for Ms. Prince

Weird Wonder Woman factoid... Recently saw a documentary on sci-fi writer Samuel Delaney. He was at the showing and spoke afterwards. In the course of the discussion, he mentioned that he wrote for DC briefly in the 60's and was responsible for getting WW to get in a jumpsuit and be a secret agent. I know that aspect of her character was revived for a recent (last 4-5 yrs?) storyline.

& the Manara/Claremont X-Woman thing is dead serious imo. But imagine the Stan Lee robot that Disney has over there making these decisions. I can only imagine what comes next. If we're lucky a John Byrne-style She-Hulk movie is in the works.

X-Women serious? I suppose it's worth going back over the book for a second glance...

That's a great WW story! I would have prodded him for more since I love the I, Ching era of the character. DC actually did revive the Diana Prince secret identity for the current run, as well as hook WW up with a studly new man's man. I think they even knocked boots, and I'm not sure if that was ever implied with Steve Trevor. In any case it looks like that's all out the window for now. Goofy new costume not withstanding, I'm excited to see what they are trying to do with the character.

Has anyone read or looked through El Eternauta? I like the art and the story sounds fun.

El Eternauta is a sprawling tale that begins with aliens sending a toxic snowfall onto humanity, a devastating attack followed up by their unleashing of bizarre, remotely mind controlled creatures to mop up the survivors. Survivors, who, thanks to the damage wrought on the environment, can now only venture out doors in specially constructed bio-hazard suits.

It was first published in 1957 to 1959 in Argentina. I am not sure if it has ever been translated to english but still...

I just finished reading El Eternauta, the 1969 "remake". H. G. Oesterheld remade his script and Breccia did the artwork this time. It consensed what was the first 2 1950' books with drastic changes to the storyline, to reflect Oesterheld mind at the time.
For that, the last 3 chapters rushed by editors under governmental pressure.

It is very interesting to follow Oesterheld life story after that, as he was abducted and eventually kill by government, as his 4 daughters and their husbands, after coming up with the third of El Eternauta book.

Post Re: comics?
i've been reading a lot of pre-1990 stuff. mostly like 1962-88. i've been re-discovering old titles that I had once read an odd issue or two. i've really been enjoying silver age war comics- Our Fighting Forces, GI Combat, Weird War, Blackhawks etc

I'm also being strangely pulled to reading the entire story of the Iron Fist (Marvel). PowerMan and Iron Fist team ups are classic and awesome inner-city brawls, but the faux-asian mysticism of the Iron Fist was really handled quite well over the years. they weren't too heavy-handed (for comics) and the character has that batman-like quality of being just some guy (with ancient asian power fist action)

ancient asian power fist action

Anyone ever read the Bizarro World gn?
i've always been intrigued by the concept of the book, non-super-hero indie authors putting there spin on the character. finally was able to thumb through one. only took me a few pages to realize it was pure awesomeness. i love how harvey pekar's short has bizarro look like him.

I'm still just in the middle of this chunky book and I can already recommend it !
Particularly, people in animation should look it up.

If you haven't read Axe Cop check it out, written by a 5 Y.O drawn by his 29 Y.O. Brother...

With lines like "Looks like we're going to have to do this the old fashioned way... The old fashioned way that nobody knows..." You know they're headed toward an Eisner.

Edit* I recently picked up about 40 of the Conan the Barbarian full sized Comic Mags from the 80's (The Punisher got the same treatment for awhile too) from a local goodwill for a quarter a piece.... Not a bad price point considering they were still in the brown paper wrapping direct from the publisher.

I'm heading out to my local comic shop on lunch to check out FCBD. Hope it's not a madhouse.

EDIT: Erp, the comic shop listed is actually further than the site says so. There was no way I would have gotten there and back before my lunch was over. Oh wells, maybe next year. :?
