Post at the mountains of madness
guillermo del toro is finally given the green light to start making his big screen version of h.p. lovecraft's novella, at the mountains of madness. james cameron is on as producer, and it'll be shot in 3D.
http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2010/07/29/gu ... -the-year/
this project has been talked about for years, but del toro never got the go ahead from the studios. he had the script and ideas all planned out. after sadly falling out of the hobbit project, it is amazing news to hear this.
can't wait to see how he creates the elder things and the shoggoths. it is for sure going to be a challenge to create not just the characters, but also that lovecraftian horror!

This is great! I love Del Toro's work and Lovecraft's as well, but seriously, STOP WITH THE FUCKING 3D ALREADY.

I was so bummed to hear about The Hobbit movie... not sure if this will make up for it but it's always good news to hear about a new Del Toro movie.
And yes, I hate 3D too, not the format itself but waring 3D glasses sucks. The good thing is usually you can find them also in 2d versions.

I remember being a kid they'd have the tv specials and you'd get the little paper 3-d glasses with red and blue frames. Even then, I thought it was so cheesy, it would never catch on. Who could have predicted it would become the future of film... I hate it too.

With all the 3D hype going on, 3D televisions, and all the big movies filming in 3D, it seems that this is the way of the future. Which sucks because IMO the 3D is just distracting most of the time. You lose the super crisp picture quality, the glasses are uncomfortable and usually covered in greasy prints from the slob before you. I will always choose regular 2D over 3D any day.

I really hope this turns out great. But I am not holding my breath. Most Lovecraft based movies suck- bad. Seeing the horror fleshed out can never match the perfection of Lovecraft's ability to paint the picture with words. And with what he didn't describe.

Please don't go CGI overboard.

that's what makes lovecraft so hard to put on film! a lot of lovecraft's horror comes from the unknown. but my hopes are very high (i know i shouldnt do that) on this film.

I hear ya. If Del Toro can pull it off, it will be legendary.

Try wearing those stupid 3D glasses when you wear glasses already. =/

I don't like 3D. I feel like that media format is being pushed to consumers a little too hard for my taste.

YES! Great news. This was the first Lovecraft story I read.

I hope it isn't a cgi fest.

Agreed. It's another gimmick being crammed down our throats, besides remember Halloween 3!!! Be afraid!

I am pretty damn sure the only ones who think 3D is going to catch on are the big electronic companies. Everyone on every forum who chimes in hates it. Video game and film critics all hate it. You might trick people into wearing uncomfortable glasses at the movies but they aren't going to do it while gaming for hours or sitting at home trying to relax. Thumbs up for any H.P. Lovecraft work though. Hope it does it justice.

If they wanted to make it truly Lovecraftian, it would be in 4D.

If this works out; and I dearly hope it does, I hope we could see some of the Randolph Carter stories. Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath would be awesome.

Wow, heard about this one a looooong time ago. Lovecraft adaptations have been dicey (though Re-Animator or anything w/ Jeffrey Combs passes muster), many bad versions of his work out there. Can't wait to see Cameron & Del Toro go batshit on the towering stygian gloom of cyclopian monolithic architecture of the Old Ones
There is this really good adaptation of 'Call of Cthulu' however: torrent.

yeah 3D would be good for this story. Maybe 3D only in parts and they prompt you to put the glasses on?

F the Hobbit.

Have you read At the Mountains?

I hope it is in Engrish

I think 3D would take away from this. I think it's great for kids stuff or dumb "blow up BOOM" type movies. It can be fun. But for something like this I think it'd be distracting.

F the Hobbit WHAT?! I love the Hobbit! I think I heard Jackson just said "FUCK IT!" and is doing it now.

I liked it better when 3D was just a gimmick for the 3rd installments of campy horror movies.
Jaws 3D... Friday the 13th part 3D... etc.

I'm with you.

3D makes me motion sick unfortunately. I'm gearing myself up for his Haunted Mansion movie as well, looks like I'll have to just suck it up for these two.

Post Re: at the mountains of madness
For the people worried about the 3d- just go see it in regular 2d. No matter how much push the movie and TV people give 3D, theaters will always show in 2D, and movie makers would be silly not to make 2d versions available. If they didn't they could probably be sued by people with physical conditions who can't use 3D glasses...
