Interesting comments, Roger. I had read a while back that Lucas didn't have enough furry material for all the Wookie costumes, thus they changed them to Ewoks, but I'm not sure how reliable the source was on that.
And as for new releases, I'm sticking with my VHS boxed set of the Trilogy.

Way Back Then, Chewbacca was the least-popular character, and a cut of promo product marketing was a big part of what made Lucas rich. Prior to Star Wars' release, studio execs didn't understand why Lucas demanded marketing "points." Not long after the movie's release, they got it. Big money in them there toy tie-ins.

Lucasbrain: Wookie planet = Not a lot of toy potential. Ewok planet = Stuffed animals for days.

But who knows? The man has re-written his own history so many times by now. I'm inclined to trust people like his former wife Marcia and his bitter-grapes mentor Francis Coppola when they talk about Uncle George. They have big mouths.

Dean, that's the first time I've heard that theory, but I guess it's possible. Kenner was pretty gung-ho about Wookiees when the Holiday Special was made. They were going to make figures of Chewie's family.

The reason Lucas got sequel and merchandising rights is because he was so far behind schedule and over budget on the first film. He forfeited his director salary for those rights.

Have you guys seen this article? Nothing new but nice to see someone publicly disagreeing (whatever that means) with Lucas

Kurtz has been pretty outspoken over the years. I would have loved to have seen the Lucas/Kurtz version of Apocalypse Now, it was supposed to have a shoestring budget and documentary-style camerawork.

Kurtz is also a Mormon. I wonder if he had more creative control over Star Wars if it would have had more of that influence in the backstory, like what Glen Larson did with Galactica.

I remember David Prowse saying some unkind things about Kurtz' refusal to drink with him. He cited Kurtz' Mormonism in a judgmental manner.

Have you seen the 6 hour workprint of Apocalypse Now? It's very rough, so far as I'm aware only available as a technically-illegal and very blurry bootleg, but it's fascinating. You get a sense of the grander vision that Milius, Lucas and Coppola originally wanted, as well as quite a few scenes not included in the "Redux" edition.

My comments about Lucas were partially derived from anecdotes in Peter Biskind's "Easy Riders and Raging Bulls."

Roger, the workprint might be available via torrent, but I found it at USENET group alt.binaries.dvd.classics. If you have a NSP with good retention (e.g. Giganews) you can probably still DL it. It was uploaded in January of this year.

and its not like they wouldnt make all that money back day 1? if he promised all og versions with the best possible audio/video people would lose their minds. but now he'll just have the usual people upset with his insistence of ruining his legacy and countless childhood memories.
