yeah, a thin line there between narcissists and those with low self esteem. the happiest people i know don't frequently use facebook, and some of the more insecure ones have allowed a dangerous codependency to form.

It's funny you should say that... I was at work the one day over the summer, and while I was on break I was flipping through the book my co-worked had brought with her, and it was all about the importance of developing and maintaining a personal digital brand as part of succeeding in the modern corporate world. It sounded like the worst dreck, with lots of masturbatory language about how having your own (myname.com) webspace and filling out every last bit of information you could on as many social and corporate networking sites as possible was the only way to get noticed and get your foot in the door. It'd be amazing to have enough time to get anything done with the amount of time devoted to managing your web persona that this book was suggesting, but I have to assume there are people that really do this.

If there's one online tool that really has brought me success it's a linkedin account. People use it, your potential boss uses it, HR use it. Recruiters use it. Good shit.

Hmmm... I've been trying to avoid another networking site like the plague, but keep getting LinkedIn requests. Fortunately, with grad school upcoming, I have some time to cross that bridge.

Linkedin is really a great, true networking tool. I have a friend that works for them, so I need to tout their greatness whenever possible

while i've heard of some great success stories on LinkedIn, I've never had much use for it.

You have to put yourself out there with it. I get requests from people I've never met. Just probably someone in a group I'm in or interested in my company. Same for me, I just requested a ton of recruiters, people I didn't know. It pays off though. I think one of the first things an interested HR department does is look you up on LinkedIn. See who you know and read your recommendations. I think it's really for appearance more than anything.

The internet was made to search for toys. and thats it..... ok maybe porn... but thats it!

LinkedIn is great...no spam, no rubbish random news you can totally do as much or as little with it as you like. Great for getting a job in specific industries too.

I don't see the point of facebook. Maybe if you are a teen but it's a colossal waste of time IMO. I remember friendster, then myspace, and even tried facebook for a year. All sucked and facebook is a spam/ information collecting marketing nightmare. It makes insecure people feel wanted and makes real relationships that much harder to exist. Why call my friend I can see his/her mundane updates every nano second? Before deleting my account I said "those of you who are my actual friends you know how to reach me, anyone else we really don't know each other." Since then not a week goes by where a friend does not beg me to get back on it, which I never will.

see, i think that is the biggest distinction between social networking and plain socializing. a less passive interaction outside of the web will always hold a strong meaning, even as virtual interactions and acquaintances are diluted to the point of meaninglessness.

find out who your friends are.

I did the same thing, but no one has asked me to come back.

if you have friends in other countries it makes it a whole lot easier to see what's going on than to write a 5 page essay on how life has been since i saw that person last. i usually just skim through what people post.

facebook is interesting...

I reconnected to a bunch of jr high / high school friends and it's cool to see pictures of them and their wives and kids.

i like the updates as well as it provides nuggets of topics bring up next time I see this person in real life.

Facebook and Skullbrains are much the same.
