So what would you call something that is strictly made for a group show of the same toy??

Custom. Unless the creator painted it, then 1-off.

In most instances toys with doodles fall into the 'toys spoilt' category . . . give me a clean item any day of the week, but that's just personal preference.

I call it a platform toy. ;P

I've always thought the term 'prototype' encompassed all pre-production forms of a toy. You could then be more specific and call it a factory sample, test shot, paint master, hardcopy, etc.

The only thing that comes to mind as a 'true' prototype for JP vinyl is the resin Stereogon from Nerd One:

Ultimately, the production vinyl Stereogon came out much larger and articulated. This smaller resin figure was used initially to show the concept for the design at toy events.
