 Re: Secret Base Toy Aliens?
My Secret Base is fight figures. I don't care about anything else they put out as long as it keeps supporting more fight figs.

 Re: Secret Base Toy Aliens?
you guys call it good business plan, i call it selling out.... .... SB has pretty solid fan base and they seem well off. I don't see why they'd need the publicity to 'broaden the audience'. They make cool clothes and awesome as hell toys, so why don't they stick with making cool clothes and awesome as hell toys. It's was their business plan that brought them where they are, and judging from this thread, its still what the fans want from them. No need to target a new audience, no need to broaden anything, they just need to keep on doing what they've always been doing, simple. I'm sure SB is well off enough that they're making money.... but I guess its always good to make MORE money This toy is terrible, especially coming from SB, I can understand the outrage.... especially from those who collect Japanese vinyl. SB was, and still is imo, one of the forerunners and pioneers in the neo Japanese vinyl game. And then they pull something like this? The old western x platform toys x Disney collab.... So yea, I can understand some civil unrest. There are 1,712 members here, and each one has a say. So that dead horse of yours will mashed into the ground. m3kcomp wrote: why even talk about this here? because Hiddy did one? Yes. The almighty owner of SB, pulling something like this? For his already established brand that already has it's own niche and fan base of collectors. Why do this Hiddy? Well, if he wants to try something new, or do a side project, whatever.... I'm all for that, but why put the Secret Base name on it. m3kcomp wrote: I'm going to start a Polly Pocket thread and take swipes at the paint application.... .... just to shore up my cred a bit, I REALLY don't like...um, let's see...Avatar action figures! What the hell do these toys have anything to do with Japanese vinyl? Now if Mori did a Polly Pocket x Rxh collab, then I'd understand what you're trying to say.... But right now you're just making a silly comparison to prove your point about 'cred' m3kcomp wrote: these ain't aimed at us, they're aimed at the millions (not hundreds) of people who buy Disney shit. I think the Vinylmation Mickey form is an abomination, one of the worst I've EVER seen, and yet it sells like fucking hotcakes! Let Disney and all those other companies that make Disney shit sell shit to the millions of people that buy Disney shit. Why does Hiddy need to jump on that bandwagon? Does he want his stuff to sell like hotcakes? Again to the beginning of my post, I see it as selling out, smh.

 Re: Secret Base Toy Aliens?
If we posted ALL of the stuff that is posted on Hiddy's blog these threads would be constant.
SB is my number one company, they also put out ALOT of crap, pure crap imo. The hello kitty halloween toy is a slap in the face to me personally as I look to SB for Halloween releases. But there is always next year.
He's running a company that puts out all kinds of stuff, not just fight figures, this is nothing new or shocking. So im confused as to the shock here.
The toy is being made by Mindstyle? then this isn't even a SB toy. It's a SB "design", like he was participating in a art show etc.

 Re: Secret Base Toy Aliens?
MindStyle is a JOKE! Even there once loyal fans hate their guts. They steal from artists, presale things that never come out and generally ignore their vendors and fans. Anyone buying from them should expect what they get, crappy toys from a completely sold out company. If I was a small respected toy company I would avoid working with these guys regardless of any perks of being associated with Disney.

The toy is being made by Mindstyle? then this isn't even a SB toy. It's a SB "design", like he was participating in a art show etc. I was thinking the same thing. One, it's not SB's figure and two, SB puts out crappy stuff pretty often. Plus, they have something for everyone, they have quite a few figures that appeal to the Western crowd, the "kaiju" style crowd and the fight figure crowd(that's me!). It's not "selling out", it's just doing something different, which is pretty much what they've been doing all along. You can't expect to love every single item from a company you like. For example, I like Nike shoes but they put out tons of hideous shoes more often than not. Another example, Mishka, I really enjoy their shirts and their collaborations with Cure but I also know they've done 2 [expletive deleted] with KR, but that doesn't stop me from liking them. At the end of the day Secret Base is a company and like any company their goal is to make money doing something they enjoy. If Hiddy thinks this turd of a collaboration is beneficial for his company then so be it. I'll patiently wait for the next fight figure release.

 Re: Secret Base Toy Aliens?
Some good points rsised in this thread.
I used to be upset my "my" bands selling out by doing licensing their song for use on a commercial or whatever, but that was before people stopped buying music and I realized I was being pretty stupid about it. Now I am stoked when for instance Holy Fuck are used on a national car commercial - I figure this revenue straem helps a band pay some bills, fund a tour, record some music and it also exposes potential new fans to their music - and hopeully helps the band stay around a bit longer.
I see this as analogous with the ALien toy. Mindstyle are putting out a gross toy with an SB or BxH logo on it. SB get some money (I assume) and at the very least some more exposure, very likely gains some new fans who explore beyond the logo on the toy, who in turn maybe buy some SB clothing or a regular SB toy,and that allows Hiddy to maybe make some of the cool stuff that makes SB negligible amounts of cash, but that we all like but buy in relatively small quantities.
In the current climate, and with less of us buying fights and other toys, we need the other stuff SB produces to subsidize production of the stuff we do like.

 Re: Secret Base Toy Aliens?
i completely understand the argument about needing to make money, get exposure, current economic climate, blah blah blah, but just to play devils advocate.. i first saw holy fuck about 4-5 years ago at a festival in canada. i had never heard of them before, but as i walked past the stage where they were playing on my way to catch the flaming lips, i was immediately drawn to their sound. i stayed for most of their set with my jaw on the floor in complete awe of what i was hearing. the little bit of the lips set that i saw afterwards (for as good as their live show can be) paled in comparison.. went home, got their ep and have been a fan ever since. i think many of the die hard collectors around here have similar stories about getting into these toy companies/lines and in some ways its what makes the journey that much sweeter interesting comparison nevertheless, muton. Re: Secret Base Toy Aliens?
Well thats pulling out one particular part of the analogy. I myself didnt discover Holy Fuck through a commercial - and I dont care who did, its just cool they discover 'em - I just like the fact it maybe helps 'em keep on going. Plus, I used to be so against it, and considered it selling out. I could've summarized my opinion in one sentence I guess: with less of us buying fights and other toys, we need the other stuff SB produces to keep the company going and subsidize production of the stuff we do like. Besides some of the other stuff is cool - I love some of the Hysteric Mini collabs for instance, and the SB produced McSupersizeme's. gazpacho wrote: i completely understand the argument about needing to make money, get exposure, current economic climate, blah blah blah, but just to play devils advocate.. i first saw holy fuck about 4-5 years ago at a festival in canada. i had never heard of them before, but as i walked past the stage where they were playing on my way to catch the flaming lips, i was immediately drawn to their sound. i stayed for most of their set with my jaw on the floor in complete awe of what i was hearing. the little bit of the lips set that i saw afterwards (for as good as their live show can be) paled in comparison.. went home, got their ep and have been a fan ever since. i think many of the die hard collectors around here have similar stories about getting into these toy companies/lines and in some ways its what makes the journey that much sweeter interesting comparison nevertheless, muton. I enjoyed the interviews and live footage on the Scion site, and thought teh exposure was great for those featured. I also enjoyed hearing Holy Fuck blaring out of my TV while I'm ignoring the commercial. That advertising money is going to be spent one way or another and I'd rather it went into a relatively underground artists pockets and was recycled into touring and record releases. They for sure arent getting rich off it.
