some western figures look great in muti-colorways: tigerbaby, dero, mr bunny, little pollards, dorbel... just to name a few. Not all Japanese toys look great display in multiples (but I am afraid to make a list).

I think one of the factors is pad printing vs. handpainted. For some reason the human touch make the "variation on a theme" more interesting to me.

The calli is a special case because the silver was held in such high regard by most collators. I also think the release schedule is a factor. The time between the silver and the yellow was almost a year (I think). Then all of a sudden there were all these new colorways. In the words of a great video game "it has a lessening effect".

That is my brief explanation before heading off to eat at a “raw bar” which sounds like French sushi to me. Wish me luck, this might be my last post.

I would be interested to hear an explanation for this apparent phenomenon as well.

OK, here's my opinion: I think it's the same deal either way. However, multiple colorways of western vinyl does not rub me the wrong way. I see it as a way for the companies to generate cash, which is great. I think most companies are in it for the love of toys and plow the money back into bringing our more cool stuff. I really don't see anyone buying corporate jets (unless maybe Wildbrain has one).

Most sculpts, both western and Japanese, I have in one colorway. I really have to love something to get more than one colorway. For instance I love skullbrains, but 3 is plenty for me. But who knows, maybe someday I'll get a 4th!

so i think i have grounds to chime in here--i love the new calli stripe colorways, but the quality has deteriorated while the retail price has risen to that of the secondary market. its a major turn off.

that said, if i were to "slim down" my calli collection, id consider getting rid of the golden angel dust, but thats about the only one im not impressed with. i dont see much point in that though cause id still be left with 12, and whats one more calli in the end?

oh yeah, i also have no qualms about returning figures i think are lacking in quality, and ive returned a few callis to flopdoodle for replacement to keep my collection primo. i think that all collectors have a duty to hold designers accountable for the quality of their products--tim is awesome though and its never an uphill battle. he recognizes, and then ammends, problems as quickly as his fans.

i do hope that any upcoming non-stripe designs are really innovative though, because the calli sculpt really calls out for artistic attention.

its not normally a colorway x number of releases issue for me personally.

more like the original calli was the only one around for so long and that it seemed special, which is pretty rare for any toy these days. now it doesn't seem special.
(yes yes.. this applies to any vinyl from any nation - we just happen to be talking about biskup here)

as for pollards, i'm with glenn. the big pollard is not as cute as the little one. i like it little and cute.

It's been said ten times already, but the black/silver Calli is definitely the best one. None of the other Callis can compare.

Side note - I LOVED the Golden Angel Dust Calli...until I saw the Silver Angel Dust one. Silver goes best with light blue. Gold goes best with a darker blue. Now I only LIKE the Golden Angel Dust Calli, which is the only Calli I own. I might one day have my Calli's light blue stripes painted a darker blue...and the top gold perhaps.

Yeah, I agree. I'm kind of disappointed by the big Pollard. I was really looking forward to it because I love the little guys, and I don't own any.

I think it is the arms; sometimes articulation is a bad idea.

I liked the new colorway, and wanted to get one. But, $250 for the set in my opinion is overpriced. The print image really doesn't seem that spectacular or particularly specific to this colorway, and it almost feels like its thrown in to jack up the price, knowing toy collectors will want the figure. The smaller print with the Polska egg, the lower price point ($150) and the fact it was hand doodled, was much more appealing.

The handpainted big pollards seemed kind of muted and boring (at least the few I've seen)...hopefully some of the production ones will be more interesting.

Well, this is refreshing.

I personally get so tired of people (especially on a certain other board) venerating certain artists--usually the same 3 or 4--to the point where it's like "God, _________ is a genius, and I'll buy whatever he puts out no matter how many there are or how much he decides to hike the price." For my part, I understand the collector mentality all too well, but there comes a time when it starts to seem like opportunism.

It's great to read comments from people that can discuss the pros and cons of marketing, collecting, etc. without lapsing into fanboyism.

it was the black and silver calli and the pink baseman dumbluck that got me offtrack from the real deal jp vinyl. these two toys in particular were so fresh at the time, but all these different colorways lack inspiration and smell of opportunism, especially since they seem so rushed (as evidenced by the clear fall in quality). same deal with kaws...but at least he has new and different sculpts coming out. my .02.

Artists/companies will keep making new colorways as long as people keep buying them. I personally am thankful because often I am unable to get the first issue due to high demand. Although I agree that the first colorway is usually the best, sometimes I like subsequent versions better.

If I ever get a Calli, it will be the Gold Angel Dust.
