I'm confused as to why people are wetting them selves over this. Edwards did some great sfx, no doubt. But Monsters is a road movie/love story.
I'd prefer to see Del Toro, though that may be a bit obvious, at least Del Toro knows how to entertain.
Edwards seems to have a light hand. Admittedly I am basing that on his one film, and no doubt they have made him run some tests before attaching him to it, so maybe he knows how to make a big movie and crush buildings.
