Lately I've been watching the early 1960's comedies.. you really have to wade through some stinkers to see a good one. Even the good ones are painfully slow paced...anyhow, Mr. Hobbs takes a vacation with Jimmy Stewart was pretty good. Last night I saw an awesome beatnik scene from a Jerry Lewis clunker.

I've always loved that time period, even before Mad Men made it trendy .

The Donnie Yen vs Sammo Hung fight is one for the ages. Actually all of Sammo's scenes are amazing. What a legend.

oss 117 and its sequel do a great job of recreating that swanky vibe. the movies aren't quite funny enough to recommend, but i enjoyed them for their haminess... hamiosity? hamnioticity?

just plowed through series 4 of the it crowd. didn't realize they continued after series 3.

No, not really. The second half of the film dissolves into an almost Rocky type situation with a very over the top bad acting westerner villain but it's still a fun film and a pretty good one. With Sammo doing the fight choreography there's quite a few memorable fights and the story has a lot of the strong dramatic moments like the first. You won't be disappointed.

Ip Man Deuce. (SPOILAGE!!!)..or should I say "SOILAGE"?

I felt like it was rushed, cliche as hell with the over the top westerner--plus the fight scenes at the end were annoying. Also, all the cool characters from the first one were bums in this one. I practice Wing Chun myself and thought it was funny that Ip Man managed to attack the boxer's biceps to break him down! ...yes! that's the secret! instead of attacking what generally won't move too far and provides a bigger target (head, neck, torso), let's attack the biceps--because that's the easiest thing to do when someone is trying to punch the crap out of you. I don't know...it kind of lost me there. There were a lot of interesting things they could've done with a boxer for a fight scene.

The first one was solid. this one IMO was WTFville. I think they're doing another that picks up with where Bruce Lee stepped in. I hope it's better than the last one.

I just can't watch Chinese MA Blockbusters anymore - no matter how great the fight scenes are, the ubiquitous, blunt propaganda just annoys the fuck out of me (not to mention Donnie Yen's "acting" - I actually feel it's gotten even WORSE over the last few years). That said, I absolutely loved and would like to recommend Gallants - wonderful hommage to Shaw Bros. films, grumpy old men who kick major ass and a performance by Teddy Robin that had me in stitches. One of my personal faves of the year.

Watched Eyes Without A Face last night; very creepy French flick from 1960. Most of the film has no score whatsoever (something I like a lot in films like this), and there are lots of very interesting visual choices. I couldn't believe how squirm-inducingly graphic the surgery scene was for a movie from 1960!

Gallants is amazing and one of the best films in the world for 2010. It was a great experience seeing it with a full crowd at this years NYAFF. Yes the film has a lot of special value to me with my love of Shaw when I growing up but seeing it with people who have never heard of the Shaw Brothers and seeing them love it really hammers home how good Gallants is.

Gallants was the only flick at Fantastic Fest last year that any of my friends watched twice. I liked it plenty more than Ip Man 2, that's for sure - can't wait for it to come to DVD/Bluray.

We tried suffering through Art of the Devil, but couldn't bear it, so we watched Planet of the Vampires instead.
Next on the list is I'm Still Here.

One of my favorite '80s movies just popped up on Netflix- a week after me waiting two weeks for a VHS rip to fully download.
If you like cheesy 80s cinema add PLAIN CLOTHES. Arliss Howard, Suzie Amis and Seymore Cassell. Arliss reciting e.e. cummins "She, Being brand new" is worth the price of admission.

There's been a HK-DVD out for a while that has English subs (even for the making of)... Ordered it pretty much instantly after coming home from the cinema. ;)

The stuff they find is pretty cool, but I hate the short stout guy. He mimics a lot of what his partner does (things he says, body language, etc.) It isn't so bad when you first start watching, but it gets annoying after a while.
