it's funny how your airbrush work feels completely different from your brush work. are you purposefully selecting different color palettes and details to bring out? and avoiding applying both techniques to one toy? whatever the reasons, these are looking great, restrained and traditional.

Thanks.

With all of my customs, I try to do what I think will work best for the specific toy I'm working on. For me, that means using different tools and techniques to get the job done and they can be different every time. I try to consider the different features, textures, details, base vinyl color, and overall character of the toy and then try to paint it in a way that brings out the elements that I like.

When I paint a toy, I'm not trying to show off my "style," I'm trying to show off the toy. I want the paint app to emphasize what's in the sculpt, not overpower it.

I understand that this approach might make my "work" seem inconsistent from an artistic/stylistic standpoint but that doesn't really bother me. I paint these toys because I enjoy it.

Everybody likes what they like. I like to paint little monsters.

Nope. All V-COLOR. I know some folks are getting some nice results with MK but I'm gonna stick with V for as long as I can.

And thanks, man. Glad you like it.

Right on Dustin, I agree with you on this. But I'll also say that you can achieve your own style and still paint in a way thats respectful and conscious of the toy you're painting. So don't sell yourself short. ;)

You did it again Dustin! The paint app brings out the details in the toy so much! I wish I lived in California to pick this up. Keep up the good work :D

Really nice work!

I wish we could see a new plane or tank from Gargamel, wonder what the chances of this would be without Charactics being around :(

Post Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Space-Madness! 1/26/11
Thanks, dudes. Here's a better pic of this guy. I took this one in a different direction than the other S-Taiins and I'm stoked that the person who commissioned me to paint is happy with the result. It's definitely creepier than the other ones.

Post Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Pocket Buddies: 1/29/11
Some fun little pocket-dudes I tried to finish up in time to add to the "one-off" show. Ran outta time so these dudes (except Hujili's Ooze) will be coming with me to the show as trade bait (along with the Gekko).

Thanks for looking. See you tonight if you're coming to the show! 8)

Post Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Barnacled Gray Killer: 2/2/11
^^^Thanks for the kind words, guys.

This is my first time painting a killer. I was trying to run with a palette that would be somewhat "realistic" while still being mindful that the end result needed to be a fun toy. Sculpted the barnacles with super sculpy to play to the character and break up the overall smoothness of the sculpt..
