Was watching Star Wars with my daughter over the weekend and mentioned the newer toys I had stashed in the loft - had to get them down and then took some photos. She's only 4 and knew loads of the character names - real proud dad moment!!!

I've never seen those Hong Kong Edition boxes before, but they are gorgeous. I'm 21, but we have the black-box VHS edition of the OT, so Star Wars has always been a big deal for me, and those Kenner versions are my jam

Want to know why Star Wars Episode 1 was not well received?


I will tell you why. Because "Hasbro" stocked the shelves of toy departments BEFORE the movie was released. With each and every package featuring a prominent photo of DARTH MAUL.

Not hardly. I watched Episode 1 recently. I think Darth Maul had a grand total of 2 spoken lines. Quite the character development wouldn't you say?

I blame Hasbro or whoever green lighted (G.L.) the package design for raising false expectations...

I blame the movie for sucking, plain and simple. The complete lack of story, character development, dialog, direction and acting can't be blamed on toy marketing - the move was just godawful.

They shouldve subtracted 15 min of crap scenes (pick one..) and added some more about where Darth Maul came from etc.

The first two movies have been on TV the last 2 Saturdays here - not seen them for ages and I'd forgot how bad they were!
The acting is worse than I remember. C3PO's 'comedy' lines when his head is being dragged around by R2 are script high points!

Funnyman Seth Rogen was left stunned by a recent encounter with his moviemaking hero George Lucas - because the Star Wars director spent 20 minutes telling him the world would end in 2012.

Rogen was left speechless when Lucas and Steven Spielberg joined a movie meeting he was a part of - but the encounter has left him worried his life will be over next year.

He recalls, “George Lucas sits down and seriously proceeds to talk for around 25 minutes about how he thinks the world is gonna end in the year 2012, like, for real. He thinks it.

“He’s going on about the tectonic plates and all the time Spielberg is, like, rolling his eyes, like, ’My nerdy friend won’t shut up, I’m sorry...’

“I first thought he (Lucas) was joking... and then I totally realized he was serious and then I started thinking, ’If you’re George Lucas and you actually think the world is gonna end in a year, there’s no way you haven’t built a spaceship for yourself... So I asked him... ’Can I have a seat on it?’

Maybe he thinks it's gonna end because HE'S going to end it. Maybe he's so pissed at Red Letter Media and everyone who agrees with them (aka everyone on Earth) that he funded his own working Death Star to shut us all up?

Maybe in some super-cool alternate universe, but there are a lot of reasons why this never happened. One was that Lucas hated ESB (he still isn't satisfied with it), and another was that both of them pissed off the Director's Guild so he had to find a non-Guild director to work with so he wouldn't stir things up again.

David Lynch was going to direct ROTJ, that could have been interesting but I can imagine people would have hated it.

Regardless of WHO directed it...it would not have helped that script.

The original script and ideas were way better. I get why they did what they did but still. I always consider StarWars as episodes iV and V. Everything before and after are easily forgettable.

I know I've said it before, but I'll always love Jedi. Love it. Is it as good as Empire? No, but it's still so fun and I love Muppetts and the Emperor is so awesome! Plus Luke isn't a cry baby in it, he finally TCB! I'm a child at heart so I'm all for Ewoks and Jabba's palace. Lando blows up the Death Star II and never gets enough credit. All sorts of fun junk. Palpatine makes that movie though. Such a bastard.

I'm with ya, BD! Nothing wrong with Jedi, at all. Anyone who craps on it solely because of Ewoks is lame. If you can't handle Ewoks, then you shouldn't be able to handle Chewie/R2, or the SW universe in general. Jedi had a lot of good, memorable parts, and I enjoy watching it a heck of a lot more than ep IV! Empire>Jedi>Star Wars.

Jedi was my first HUGE deception in a movie theatre as a kid. I can understand those who liked it as child and lives on memories of that but the story is not intersesting at all, Ewoks or not.
They sure did'nt help giving it any credibility though, they were there to sell toys.
But then again, Indiana Jones bored me to death also ...

The pacing and editing of Return of the Jedi is pretty bad. And the cartoonish elements weren’t horrible, but the level of reality was lessened. I mean, how many characters anyone cared about died in Jedi. In the first film and Empire you have tons of folks on the rebel side being introduced, there is camaraderie and then BOOM dead. Practically every X-Wing pilot, Luke’s Aunt and Uncle, that guy in the bar looses an arm, a pile Jawas, etc... In Empire, more rebels, Luke looses a hand, Lando looses his city, Han is used as a guinea pig for a freeze chamber that can kill him.

What happens in Jedi? The most bad-ass character in the series (Boba Fett) has the lamest screen death ever. And then where is the only other death scene? An Ewok dies in the most cliched maudlin way ever.

You can’t say the rebels are suffering in battles and not show it or at least hint at it. Jedi didn't show much of a struggle at all. It was all a nice & neat bow on the messy story that proceeded it.

That said, I think the ending of the “Special Edition” version of Jedi stinks. In the original version the Ewoks singing that “Jubjub” song makes all the sense in the world! Of course they are going to sing some goofy celebration song! It makes sense! The new ending is ridiculous and looks like some high school senior in drama club wrote it.

Whoa! Those are awesome. And they were from that magical time between 1977 and about 1980 when all kinds of space-toy knock-offs came out.
