Meh.
That's like saying I have to accept people saying widder instead of water if I choose to live in our fine city. Yet I still correct them and say "I think you mean waTer in the RAY-DE-ATE-OR, not widder in the rad-ee-ater. And no, I won't take cheese wiz on that".

This made me laugh - HARD. I know exactly what you're talking about.

Arghhhh@&7;,?5.)&@'k!!!!

More lost days of work ...

When you work on roads and snow is less a delay but more of a life threatening hazard you will change your mind.

I love the east, I love the cold winter, don't mind some snow,,,, but HATE this constant battering of white hell.

What's funny about Chicago is there are all these warnings and news updates on ice storms and blizzards and I don't know 1 person worried. Everyone I know is like "meh, whatever" and keeps on going about their day or is mocking it. We mock mother nature here. With mustaches and aviator shades on and big hairy beer belly's.

Not common, but not unheard of. My parents (both grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago) say it, and I've heard some other people infrequently use it. I honestly thing it's more of a northwest Indiana hick thing. Warsh (wash), stell mell (steel mill), vydock (viaduct), crick (creek), amongst others, are some I've heard. It makes me want to stab my eardrums, but your mileage may vary.

^^ haha, I see.. Dude also said warter instead of water. Worse than the "wooder" if you ask me. Pretty sure I've heard John Goodman say warsh on Roseanne before, they were from Chicago right?

Hmm, that's interesting, because Roseanne did take place in a fictional Chicago suburb. So it's entirely possible Goodman would have worked that little detail in to be authentic.

Back on topic, I'm hoping the Snowpocalypse is everything promised so that I can get a day off of work and go sledding in a public park with other friends that are "too old" for such things. But after that, I hope it goes away. I'm over winter and snow already.

20"+ and I still dug myself out and went to work. I won't let some snow tell me what to do! I'm more worried about finding a parking spot when I get home and it's -4.

BTW, anyone see the Lakeshore Drive Pics? It's like a zombie movie! What I don't get is there were both blizzard and high waves/lake flooding warnings for 48 hours BEFORE anything hit. What idiot would take the road CLOSEST TO THE ACTUAL LAKE on the day they were hitting?!?! I hate to be a dick but those people deserved it. There's about a million other routes north and none involve taking a road that is on the cusp of the lake we were being told for 48 hours will flood and have huge waves the day of a gigantic blizzard.

PS- I won't be so smug when I get home at midnight and find mountains of snow instead of places to park.

Could be worse. Can you imagine I had to use the air conditioner today in San Francisco? Sweating my ass off!
In Winter. In Feb. What's the world coming to? I wish we had some snow here.

I wish our cities were the same cities but our weather switched. Like Chicago was Dudley Moore and SF was Kirk Cameron and instead of souls being swapped it was climate conditions.

Post Re: I F#$%ing Hate the SNOW!
That's serious fucking shit! I understand the argument of "I worked hard to shovel it, it's mine!" but there are so many arguments against it. 1- If I shovel all the spots can I save them? 2- If I'm parked but don't shovel or do any WORK but pull out, can that count? 3- If I pull into a non-saved spot can I then call dibs, who's going to argue? 4- Why is there garbage in our street?

I know the "worked hard" argument is an honest one but people aren't honest, especially when it comes to things like this, and just take advantage. My proposal was if the city wants to be ok with "dibs" but NOT have garbage in the street why not sell special cones or similar product good for 1 week that you can legally use. THEN they get revenue, the people who "worked hard" would be willing to spend money on the "proof" and get their spot and no more un-uniform garbage all over the place.

Anyway, I've seen windows smashed over this, which is dumb because logic would dictate the next car to park in that spot without the broken window would have been the culprit leaving their car open to more damage. People should just be glad to be good citizens to have shoveled a little bit and park where they can if where they shoveled is taken. If we all shoveled a "spot" then all the spots are equally hard worked for and you should park where available. Luckily I haven't seen any tickets for illegal parking. Sometimes it's all that's available since the legal spots are sometimes hit with mountains of plowed snow.

I really hate the "old Chicago" thoughts on this, those dudes get so pissed and aggressive.

^^people do the same shit in Allentown, myself included. My reason is because I live on a street that's basically an alley and is packed with cars and is impossible to park on. I don;t do it because I worked hard. I save it with some chairs but expect them to get thrown to the side, which they usually do. I think it's actually quite accepted around here though. But then again I used to park on the sidewalk in an alley when all the spots were taken on my block. Not exactly hard on tickets.

what's REALLY fucked up is when you actually see some guy sitting in the chair...
with a baseball bat. no shit, saw it one year in my old neighborhood (old irving).
that was back when we had block parties, and you knew most of the people (and
the cars) that "belonged" on the street. fucking neighborhood shoveled parking
space watch was still a bit much, though.

Post Re: I F#$%ing Hate the SNOW!
EVOM, it used to be a way of life and totally accepted when I was a kid. They made it a law eventually that you couldn't do it. Also over the last 15 years or so Chicago's had a LOT of transplants so you get a lot of "Old Chicago" tude from people who've always done it if you're against it. I was born and raised in the city but I'm pretty against it. I'm maybe 1 of 5 people in my tightly jammed area who don't do it. Most of the people in my condo actually don't, one even throws the junk away when he sees it because it really pisses him off hahaha. But then again, there's lots of aggression to face. Cops have to get called in all the time. My issue isn't for ME, but my wife and 2 year old. She doesn't want to leave the house in fear of losing her spot and not being able to find a new one and having to walk 4 blocks in this crap. Then the "spot savers" just look like dicks making a woman and child walk that far in ice and 2 feet of snow because they have some entitlement issues.

Post Re: I F#$%ing Hate the SNOW!
I live on a small block with about 10 occupied houses.
We have room for about 30 cars. We all dig out our spots, sometimes helping each other make the spots bigger. I know pretty much every car that belongs to a neighbor. We all work together to make sure we have a safe place to park since the surrounding area is kind of sketchy.

So yeah. We put up cones/chairs/whatever.

During the rest of the year none of us do it. But when you've gone out and dug spaces for your car and your neighbors car.. you do tend to personalize it when someone who doesn't live on your block swoops in and takes the spot.

Especially when I try to go to the grocery store and every space in the parking lot is full of people too lazy to dig out a spot. Or when I try to go to the movies and have to park a block away because that lot is full too.

Thank fuck for off street parking here since because of the plows we have single sided parking (with the obligatory vague sign postings no one can quite understand). Still the people in the back of our building are slightly handicapped in the brain because they can't park for shit (always crossing the lines) into our already tight spots.
