Post threeA Toys
Dunno where to put this. Please move it if you can figure it out.
Also, hands up anyone who already knew about these & was keeping quiet?

Image

Not technically Japanese toys, as they're designed by Aussie artist Ashley Wood
(worked on Judge Dredd, Spawn, and Metal Gear Solid amongst other things)
& Kim Fung Wong (about whom I know nothing,
except that he's not Japanese & maybe goes by the name of Three-Zero).
I doubt they're made here either,
although Ashley hints on his blog about a forthcoming collab with Bandai.

Anyway, they make these retro-future war-themed toys including robots,
and they dropped the first of a new line (?) in their "World War Robots" series,
"Japan Defence Force" at Wonder Festival.

These things ROCK!
They're made of vinyl, though it really really looks like scrap metal!
The big guys are about 12" tall while the small fella is only a couple of inches high.
The only drawback is ... they are REALLY F***ING EXPENSIVE!

Next post, pics.
And here's a link to the website: http://www.threeaonline.com/
(Once you're in, go to 'Toys and Apparel', then to 'WWR'.)

I've been tempted to pick up a few robots and maybe a human figure.

Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt and sold 'em all off . . . the release rate is intense!

As a Brit of a certain age I'm focussing on the 2000AD license. It doesn't seem to have the same frenzied following as most of the other lines and will hopefully be a little more friendly on the wallet in the long term!

Image

Kirkland loves 'em and I believe a few other Brainers dig them selectively!

I'm a reasonably big 3A whore myself... love the robots and the soldiers and the emo-ey costume design of the Adventure Kartel stuff. I've been writing reviews of some of the toys as I get them over on CollectionDX to try and help people who can't make heads or tails of the awful 3A forum or fandom but are interested in the designs. A bit behind though, need to do Large Martins and Armstrongs, as well as Little Shadow.

Hongkongese. Three Zero = the two eyes and "nose" of a gas mask. He used to customize GI Joe figures as well. Been there from the start with Lau et al. if I'm not mistaken.

The toys come from A. Wood comics, including the amazing Popbot and Zombies vs Robots vs Amazons.

You think so? Take, say, an unpainted Mummyboy, which retails for 55$ or so, and a WWRp Bramble that has a gazillion articulations, is hand-painted and looks like genuine metal and retails for the same... I know which one looks expensive to me.

I'm the proud owner of an old school WWR Deep Powder Bramble myself... Now -those- are crazily expensive...

2000AD RULED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So many great characters plus a free Space Spinner AND it only cost 8p!

It was the only comic outside of Marvel and DC imports that I could really enjoy circa 1977.

I bought the Tharg figure last year in Brighton - after happening upon it in the Lanes and asking well known Ashley Wood fan Scary Andy for the lowdown. COuldnt believe there was Tharg - I was totally Zarjazzed. Old "Splundig Vur Thrigg" himself - how Scrotnig!

I've been buying Judge Dredd collections, they rule so hard. It would be cool to see some Dredd toys done right.

we stock these. overall they're cool, huge and hopefully 3A slows down their release dates...it's getting to be a bit overkill!

Are they selling? I get the sense that most of the 3A members are voracious when it comes to new releases. I'm wondering if the same is true for retail customers?

Yes and no. People who discover them will buy everything they see, but once they start buying on bambaland, they don't come back for anything but the retail exclusives. Shipping from HK is also pretty expensive so the profit margin is fairly small, which leads some stores to raise prices. And since minimum orders are fairly high, you'll still see models like the Dropcloths available almost everywhere, even if they're in my opinion the nicest toys 3a has released to date. Walk-ins do buy the 50$ items though...

hmmmm... interesting.

I think without the retail exclusives, this model would fail. impossible to compete with Bambaland and especially 3A Club

I think they only need retail for people to get curious about their toys. Free shipping is a stab at retailers... I wonder what percentage of their business s7 do online...

I like opening the package of new threeA Toys because they have the same weird factory chemical smell of the McFarlane figures I used to collect.
