And I know I'll probably catch shit for this, but I don't see a lot of difference between the [expletive deleted] and things like Datarock, Rose Vampires, Miltons and the like Just because theyre a clean sculpt ??, but they are solid character designs with hand sprayed details on JP vinyl. Hardly a platform toy IMO even though they have some flatter area to be used as that. I don't think people would pay very much for a blank dummy either. I disagree. I feel they are platform all the way. The way I see it is if you produce more than one colorway or design then it can be categorized as a platform. I don't care if you have some old man hand painting them in Japan or some eight year old kid in China producing them. Again, just my opinion. I think Flynn said it best in this interview, the part about platform toys is on the second page.... good read regardless http://blog.neonmonster.com/gallery/the ... ian-flynn/http://blog.neonmonster.com/gallery/the ... nn-part-2/

On a completely self centered note. Like 5 years ago, I did a custom Dummy that looked just like the one thats 2 down 3 right. The one with no arms. If I still painted, collected, Or gave a shit about platform crap I'd be pretty upset haha.

 Re: Le Merde going KR
Really? A super basic and simple sculpt from 6 or 7 years ago, being manufactured thousands of times and factory painted with low quality/costs is the same than a sculpture by an artist that picked the colours and designs from scratch and actually worked the form of his toy with super high japan vinyl quality?

Brian expresses very well my own frustration with platform toys - it's somebody else's sculpt, and a boring one at that.
That's why I haven't done more than a couple, and those were pretty much done as favors to friends.

i remember pulling a coop [expletive deleted] after buying two cases of the LA series when they came out.... was pretty exciting. eventually traded it away in a multi toy deal which brought me a 5yl companion.. would have liked to have kept it as i thought it was really cool. they should have more [expletive deleted] with tits

It's a great read, and is refreshingly honest, even if we have to take into account Brian's bias, making a living out of s7. As for Medicom being the only company who should make platform toys, I strongly disagree. Why should they? Other companies improved on the idea, they didn't merely copy it. Medicom (and Toy2r) license their platform to whomever wants to make a BB. Fashion brands, electronics, movies, games, whatever. KR have only done this at a very limited level, mostly offering designs by artists. Yes, there are tons of copycats that have had no originality whatsoever in their platform designs, but not all. Plus, does that put Kozik and the two gazillion Labbits on the same foot as s7 toys and their colourways since he actually chose the colours?

It's a smooth sculpt with absolutely no details that is produced with different designs even if they are all by kozik. I like to think of it as koziks personal platform toy. It cant hold its own without any paint or design on it. Again, are there any sought after blank labbits? I wouldnt know, but I dont know who the fuck would want it if there is.

 Re: Le Merde going KR
I don't really get why this is still a fucking debate here. Granted, I'm an old-school kaiju guy...so maybe my own opinion doesn't mean shit because I'm not really in the thick of it, as it were...but I've seen this argument rehashed and rehashed so many times over the years...
Do people just...forget after each time???
As has been stated before, these are toys. These are all *just* toys. KR or Monster Family...they're all cutsie platformy tchotchkes.
That said, because they ARE tchotchkes, and thus technically luxury items (unlike food, clothing, and shelter, you can do without them), one's opinions about them and collecting habits regarding them are completely and utterly arbitrary. Buy what you like.
But while that liberal ideal is fine, it doesn't make for very good conversation. I like this. You like that. End of story. Boring. In order to engage in one another...and actually share in the passion for a hobby like this (afterall, toys are meant to be shared...that's the point of playing with them with other people), there has to be a common ground of objectivity.
So, ultimately, you can have and discuss arbitrary opinions about objective characteristics of these things. But there's no basis there for one person being "right" or "wrong".
KR toys are made in China; S7 are made in Japan. Do you have a preference? KR toys are rotocast in less expensive vinyl; S7 are slush-cast in pricier vinyl. Do you have a preference? KR toys are pad-printed; S7 are hand masked/sprayed. Do you have a preference? KR toys are made in big factories in large quantities; S7 are made in tiny factories in small numbers. Do you have a preference?
In the end, they're still cutsie toys that bring some people joy...and, apparently, others disgust. That's fine. But if you're gonna stick to your guns and argue your position, stick to the objective facts.
Elitism is NOT facts. Elitism is not objective. It's just another facet (albeit, a minor one) of classism. It's just as oppressive as saying outright that "I like these better because commoners can't get them...but I'm special/better because I can". So some of y'all would do best to check that shit.

Wouldn't calling one a classist or elitist make you feel better about yourself putting yourself into a separate class and making you no worse than them? A Le Merde x Nag toy would be kinda cool come to think of it, I'm sure I'm in the minority on that.

A Le Merde x Nag toy would be kinda cool come to think of it, I'm sure I'm in the minority on that. Just an observation, no judgement. To answer your question i guess one would need to equate being in a seperate class with feeling better about oneself which is definitely not a given (i.e cool cats vs total rejects, haves and have nots, brahmins vs outcasts, pretty vs buttugly, etc...). There is some obvious elitist behaviour in the Nag thread(as defined by Sanjeev) which can be a source of annoyment at times. I still find the thread entertaining and the weirdos showing off their multi-nags is very much part of the fun. The only pleasure derived fom labelling someone-thing classist comes from noting the nice fit between a given definition and an observed phenomenon. Back to the reg-sched programming: I also think there is a somewhat of a common spirit between Le Merde and Nag x 3. Bring on the Hybrids !

 Re: Le Merde going KR
Judging people or trying to apply labels to them is useless. On this board, we're all classist to some extent--whether we're aware of it or not. We all enjoy the privilege of collecting these luxury items...and privilege is the name of the game. Whether we like it or not, we all have classism *in* us.
In an attempt to curb the inevitable denial, defensive, and deflecting posts, try to understand that this doesn't make us bad people...or in any way less important or precious than any other sentient human alive. It's just an unfortunate thing we're saddled with it...but stifling open, honest discussion about it by denying, deflecting, or being defensive ain't gonna make it magically go away.
So, again, people aren't bad. Classist behaviors are. I've never called someone a "classist", for example--or a "racist", for that matter--because that gets us nowhere. By condemning the person, you're ending the dialog. Condemn the action instead. The best we can hope to do is minimize classist behavior by being owning up to it.
I'll start. I come from the Japanese robot collecting communities (TBDX and CDX). I know a bunch of us (myself included) have shitted on Transformers in the past (and continue to do so). Yeah, we've supplied various "technical" reasons why we think Transformer toys are supposedly inferior to the classic chogokin and Jumbos of the 70's...but what it really boils down to is that any asshole with lunch money in his pocket can walk into a Walmart and walk out with a brand new, minty TF toy.
It doesn't require foreknowledge or disciplined networking. Any commoner can do it. So...pssht...whatever. Fuck that shit. Whatever the excuse, there's always an undertone of rare=better. Exclusive=superior. Those with the most inaccessible shit are clearly the superior collectors/fans/people. Just listen to how that shit sounds...
This is what happens when we start inferring hierarchies in places where they're just not appropriate. J vinyl > Chinese vinyl. Super7 > K1drobot. Nag/Anraku/Bemon > M1/Marmit/Marusan. Vintage chogokin > Transformers. And, thus, those who collect whatever's on the left side of the ">" symbol are better than those who collect what's on the other side...
Another example that some of y'all punk rock heads might understand: I used to think I was a "real hip hop head" just because I listened to shit that was straight up underground. Real gee shit straight from the slums. All that commercial basura on the radios was just for the savage 85%ers. Then I realized I was sounding more and more like a fucking backpacker everyday (heh...another label!). This behavior wasn't helping me. This wasn't getting me *more* connected with the local hip hop community; it was just creating resentment where there didn't need to be any. So I stopped hating and while I haven't pissed away all my objective criticisms of commercial "rap", the dialog I'm having with heads is a lot more free-flowing and less defensive. We're now building, not destroying.
