Spot on!

Sanjeev wrote:
I don't really get why this is still a fucking debate here. Granted, I'm an old-school kaiju guy...so maybe my own opinion doesn't mean shit because I'm not really in the thick of it, as it were...but I've seen this argument rehashed and rehashed so many times over the years...

Do people just...forget after each time???

As has been stated before, these are toys. These are all *just* toys. KR or Monster Family...they're all cutsie platformy tchotchkes.

That said, because they ARE tchotchkes, and thus technically luxury items (unlike food, clothing, and shelter, you can do without them), one's opinions about them and collecting habits regarding them are completely and utterly arbitrary. Buy what you like.

But while that liberal ideal is fine, it doesn't make for very good conversation. I like this. You like that. End of story. Boring. In order to engage in one another...and actually share in the passion for a hobby like this (afterall, toys are meant to be shared...that's the point of playing with them with other people), there has to be a common ground of objectivity.

So, ultimately, you can have and discuss arbitrary opinions about objective characteristics of these things. But there's no basis there for one person being "right" or "wrong".

KR toys are made in China; S7 are made in Japan. Do you have a preference?
KR toys are rotocast in less expensive vinyl; S7 are slush-cast in pricier vinyl. Do you have a preference?
KR toys are pad-printed; S7 are hand masked/sprayed. Do you have a preference?
KR toys are made in big factories in large quantities; S7 are made in tiny factories in small numbers. Do you have a preference?

In the end, they're still cutsie toys that bring some people joy...and, apparently, others disgust. That's fine. But if you're gonna stick to your guns and argue your position, stick to the objective facts.

Elitism is NOT facts. Elitism is not objective. It's just another facet (albeit, a minor one) of classism. It's just as oppressive as saying outright that "I like these better because commoners can't get them...but I'm special/better because I can". So some of y'all would do best to check that shit.

My interest in this discussion resides solely on the figure itself and the body of work that is Le Merde.
Since the character is somewhat of a mystery and may be even more so for new LM fans, here's my guess..,

I used to think I was a "real hip hop head" just because I listened to shit that was straight up underground. Real gee shit straight from the slums. All that commercial basura on the radios was just for the savage 85%ers. Then I realized I was sounding more and more like a fucking backpacker everyday (heh...another label!). This behavior wasn't helping me. This wasn't getting me *more* connected with the local hip hop community; it was just creating resentment where there didn't need to be any. So I stopped hating and while I haven't pissed away all my objective criticisms of commercial "rap", the dialog I'm having with heads is a lot more free-flowing and less defensive. We're now building, not destroying.

Everyone knows you East heads aren't gully for real, undergrounds all about the right coast! Seriously though, I couldn't agree more Sanjeev. It really bugs me when giving someones toys praise gets you quantified as a butt kisser around here. I am to old to act cool and unimpressed just to be punk, hip hop or Nag enough. I realized some time ago that although I am a tea snob, and a music snob and a food snob... that I can be all those things for my own enjoyment without reducing other peoples choices or happiness. If you cant show enthusiasm and excitement about the toys you like what the hell are we all doing? It reminds me of Safety Dance.

Say, we can act if we want to. If we don't nobody will. And you can act real rude and totally removed and I can act like an imbecile.

Speaking of classes and categories and what is cool or not, interesting that you would bring up the lyrics to Safety Dance...Ivan from Men without Hats was often to be seen at hardcore shows in Montreal during the eighties. I always thought that was odd in a really cool way ! I don't think anybody ever called him a dance-music top 40 poseur or anything like that.

That is awesome. In the late 80's and early 90's my friends would throw dances (not raves) and put up odd and obscure flyers all over town. We would play everything from the Cure and Butthole Surfers to Public Enemy and Gang Starr. One night this couple in their 70's showed up dressed to the nines ready to dance to some ballroom. They didn't quite know what to think at first but then they just danced the night away with us. I still remember and respect that couple to this day. Back on topic, grats to Mike for any exposure and success he has. His work kicks ass.

Sanjeev--

a little late and slight derail.

I got my 80's Transformers back from my parents attic this past Christmas. They are in pieces. Same as the Joe's. The Go-Bot's are standing strong! Go-bot Supremacy.

Just remember, Daimyo, the East created it...the West just decorated it!

But, yeah, there IS a rational medium between hating and dick-riding. That *ought* to be why we're even on this board...but too often, it's because of one of the other two things. That's nothing but ego talking...and none of the sincere passion this shit's supposed to be about.

Haha...rockert, I dunno man! Watch your back, money: there aren't too many cats repping Gobots!! I actually wonder what's more reviled: Gobots or Beast Wars (Trukk not Monkey!).

Dummy's are hipster knick knacks. They are record store cash register decorations.
Unofficial Toy Defining Test
If you hand my 2 year old son a dummy, he will glance at it, then chuck it.... Not a toy
If you hand him standard size Gargamel he will carry it around the house, talk to and pose it. TOY

The Mishka chase is sick. New head with chainsaw. First d-unny I really liked. I was asked but refused but a bearbrick, ...hmmm that's a different story. More power to the people that do one though.

Wow, years later and the same boring arguments and lines drawn in the sand.
Anyone that thinks KR is for hipsters and s7 isn't, hasn't noticed that paying 70 dollar for a toy and a sticker or bandanna that say's toy pirates comes with it. yeah. not hipster at all.
No wonder things always start to feel stale.
The only thing that amazes me is how KR continued to turn over fans so often b/c of poor quality but still kept finding new audiences. The first few series had major qc issues, as did many of their other products. That is the biggest problem I ever had with KR.

And be@rbricks are awesome. ;)
