I'm about to offer a pre-order to aid in the production of the first SPLURRT vinyl, and I've been debating over and over whether to use KickStarter or just my store. I'd like to get other board members thoughts.

nice! after reading the article (given the nature of your target audience)... if you were to do the Ollie again, would you have used kickstarter?

I have been thinking about this and have spoken with Joe about it as well.

Although I don't think it's totally necessary I do think there is a need for a third person service once you reach a particular dollar amount.

Say you need 100.00, you can pretty much easily fund the project if you only get half. But if you need 5000.00 and only get half it's almost impossible to cover the rest. Kickstarter is good for this as it's an all or nothing deal with a middle man to hold the funds.

Also you really need to have a plan with exact numbers. You need to know price packages and how many people you need to pleadge to reach your goal.

For Ollie and being my first project I would do it again the exact same way.

And honestly I have another project I may do soon, and possibly use kickstarter again. Knowing what I do now though I think I could stream line it better with a faster turnaround.

As for Joe, I want his toy badly so no matter what he choses I'm in.

Yeah, I have the pre-order pretty much thought out. it's just the lack of initial market research. I think it's a pretty bas-ass figure, but I made it. It's one of those things if production isn't totally covered but I feel like there's interest-enough to justify multiple runs, I'll find a way to scrape together the rest of the funds. I just have no way of guaranteeing that is will be popular enough to move forward with in vinyl. So, I'd like to cut out the middle man (Kick Starter) but if i feel like there's little interest, I don't want to have to issue refunds.

It occurred to me that as a general logistical kickstarter would also be of benefit to many, if it doesn't already exist.

It would work much like the fiscal version, but allow inexperienced artists, makers of stuff to work out the logistical procedures to bring things to those that want it. Perhaps collect logistical pledges along the way from willing participants and pay back with goods if project comes to fruition. Just an idea. I dont acatually do anything.. ever.
