Post Sucker Punch!
Anyone go out to see it? I went tonight to see it in IMAX. I enjoyed it. Pretty sweet to see Alex Pardees' work incorporated into the film to. Really enjoyed the samurai,neo-Nazi scenes. And like how overall it was a story inside a story, inside a story. Vanessa Justene is coo. Jamie Chung is hotter, I thought she'd be my pick of the movie... But something about baby doll man! Her eyelashes, and no emotions coming from her... I dunno it was sexy! Which is hard for me to say because I usually like busty women, hence why I thought I would of opted for Jamie Chung lol. Only downside for
me was $17.50 per ticket!

I couldnt sit through more than 20 minutes of it. Just wasnt feeling it at all. Even the super hot cast couldnt hold my attention. At least I got my money back.

I was reluctant anyway, but this is the most enjoyable review I've seen. Kind of an easy target, but it confirms my suspicions that there are way too many Snyder-isms, especially with the slo mo jumping and shadowy sexualized stuff. I also wonder if anyone who's not male and under 35 watched this movie.

Just to be fair the wife was the one who really wanted to see this movie. I will say that although the protagonist is hot, she's still a girl. which IMO is a welcome change to see women being empowered onscreen. It does look like every 12/13 y.o. boys fantasy though.

I also walked out.
I saw it on a whim and hadn't seen any trailers, just the movie poster.
I guess combining samurai swords, guns, robots, nazis, dragons, and school girl uniforms was supposed to make this visually epic. It just made it epically generic, I felt like each element had been done a hundred times before.
I also did not find it or the women sexy at all, names like baby-doll and sweet pea, with the same generic costumes to match. Seemed like the "sexiness" came from the mind of some 50 year old strip club frequenter.

This film has just been endlessly slated from what I have heard.

Missy enjoyed it, and she is 33 and female.

I was mildly interested, but wasn't expecting much. I was actually pleasantly suprised, as I thought it was much better than I was anticipating.

Sure, it was incredibly over-the-top and corny at times (actually much less than I expected though), but as pure comic book/anime/video game inspired fantasy it was great and worked really well.

I enjoyed it at the IMAX. The visuals were gorgeous. But the weakness in the story made the action scenes feel repetitive, since they didn't really move the story line. It is a difficult feat to make a film with so much action feel stagnant.

When I read this line, Scott Pilgrim comes to mind - which was brilliantly successful with this aesthetic. When I see Sucker Punch, the opposite of brilliant, or successful comes to mind :x

I just can't bring myself to see this, and this is coming from somebody who's seen every Sushi Typhoon film ever made  over the top can be fine with me, but the overall feeling I get from this is "Hey dude, do you subscribe to Maxim? Watch this, it's crazy, and you've never seen anything like it before!"

Well, without seeing it, you will never be able to accurately know, now will you?

It actually reminded me at times of Scott Pilgrim, oddly enough, at least in the sense of the fanbase that it will attract. Whereas Scott Pilgrim is the uber-nerdy, beat-you-over-the-head with geek lifestyle references comedy, this would be the slightly more serious, non-goofball fantasy version of a similar concept. Think less live-action Scott Pilgrim and more live-action Heavy Metal.

It's actually a lot more serious and understated at times than the trailers would lead you to believe. I think it's a hard film to market, and the trailers really don't do it justice, because all they're trying to do is sell it on visuals, as they do with all Snyder's films.

Now I'm not saying the story was fantastic by any means, but there is more there than you're led to believe by the initial reaction you will get from all the marketing. Or at least I did. Trust me, I went in expecting it to be utterly abysmal after seeing the trailers (I went to a $5 matinee as not to waste too much money), but was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't.

The action sequences are over the top, but not in that Sushi Typhoon kind of way. At times though, I did find myself thinking that a lot of the people who I know who are hating on it would LOVE it and praise it so highly is it was from Japan or Korea or HK instead of Hollywood.

Spoilersish, but...

I saw it the other night and am still trying to digest whether I liked it or not. I have been listening to the soundtrack ever since, so that's a plus. The action was cool, but I felt like the audience had been duped a bit by the trailers as to the actual overall plot. I was not expecting the double/triple Inception style shenanigans, so that through me for an unexpected loop that I wasn't totally satisfied with. I'm not sure if it's just because it'd be a tough movie to make good trailers for, but the whole thing felt a little dishonest, including the acknowledged deception in the film. Wrap that up with pulling back from the double dream layer and then make the entire movie irrelevant, and the more I think about it, the more I don't actually like how this turned out. It all feels a little ineffectual because the ending of the film basically says outright 'Hey, none of this shit you enjoyed mattered', which I don't like at all.

"Director Zack Snyder has stated one interpretation of the film is that it is a critique on geek culture’s sexism and objectification of women. He further admits that part of the difficulty in interpreting the movie is due to him being forced to cut many crucial scenes before the film's release in order for the MPAA to give the film a PG-13 rating, something that caused him much frustration. He does state that the future home media release will be a "director's cut", and will be much closer to his original vision for the film."

via wikipedia...

apparently blu ray version will be like 18 minutes longer.

I'd see the director's cut on blue ray. And yeah, i thought the sound track was great. Visually, maybe more steampunk than heavy metal?
Reminded me a little of Hell Boy2.

I was actually referring to the sci-fi/fantasy magazine Heavy Metal, not the music/culture:

I quite enjoyed the movie, more than expected (and the soundtrack was great!); but I couldn't pass up a chance to say how funny it is that the guy with the Garfield titty avatar is commenting on geek culture's sexism and objectification of women.

In the full review he makes the point that the film uses the girl power bullshit to justify the sexualization and implied rape. The PG-13 rating for whores with swords movie is startling.

Great rant about Snyders raping of film. He really must be stopped.

One question, why does Snyder always resort to the "It will be so much better when you see the directors cut" excuse? I never actually watched the Watchmen DC blueray, so I wouldn't know, did the DC make it a better film?

Honestly, I haven't seen it either, but I think his thought process is that there are no restrictions on things like length and content that there are for theatrical cuts.

Technically, if he wanted to put out an 8 hour version of Watchmen on Blu-Ray, he could, as the studios are usually trying to cram more and more content and "extras" into home video releases these days.

Hollywood begs to make every movie PG13 now because essentially they only make big money productions for that 13-17 demographic. A director claiming a Directors Cut will be better is just trying to sell DVD's to an older demographic that wouldn't set foot in the theater in the first place to see his/her crappy movie. I really like to see more quality R/ NC17 rated films, but I'm sure there would be kids that got in anyhow.
