You beat me to it. I played the game a little bit when it was still in development stages, so I only had one level to mess around with - but they did a good job at capturing a 16 bit look & feel. The cabinet game was still up at Alamo last week, too.

Have you guys watched both trailers? The original one made for the Grindhouse contest was great, but I can't decide which I like better between the original and the new one. HWAS is actually holding a contest just like the original Grindhouse one they won, and you can view the entires & vote here

Yeah, my friends did Daddy Cross, so go vote for it.
It's the most aware homage there. Unlike the others which play more for laughs.
Which I suspect is why it's not doing so well.

I'm reserving comment on HwaS. I have heard it's very Troma-y, which turns me straight off of it, but I'm seeing it in a week or so.
It strikes me as something that's trying too hard based on the trailers.
I'll keep an open mind.

Always liked Rutger Hauer (sp?)!! I was kinda thinking he mighta' been hiding in a booze bottle after reading about the Blade Runner production, but he's been making movies solid since the 70's till now. I'll not have hopes for the Dracula thing as nothing should have "3-D" in it's title. Blech.

I'm bad at reserving my opinion and holding back expectations. I was super psyched when I saw the original trailer for the contest entry, back in the day - that by the end of it rolling I was READY for the film to be made, it was something that I wanted to see someday.

I skipped a screening of it because of laziness and not wanting to fuck with SXSW crowds/lines, and my friend warned me that he fount it to be "very Troma-y" like you said. I really dislike Troma.. and now have little hope for how enjoyable I may find the theatrical version to be. That being said - I'm not trying to piss on the flick's parade. It's great that stuff like this can get made, can get a theatrical (especially international) release, and can get good media behind it. I have many friends who very much enjoy Troma films, and just because I don't doesn't mean they don't have a market. I'm hoping HwaSG is widely received!

I see what you're saying, but the whole "can" thing, I don't know. Look at Ti West and House of the Devil or even, to a lesser degree, Machete.

Rutger Hower F*cking kicks ass. Loved this movie!!! Great story, great enviroment, perfect one liners and gory as every movie should be. I liked the Japanese feel this movie has and it reminded me a little of one of my other all time favorites "Tokyo gore Police". I never expected Rutger Hower to pick a movie like this, what the hell did he think when he read the script, lol.. But I'm very glad he did because he makes the best hobo ever. I'm proud to be from the Netherlands!! Big ups to Jason Eisener!!!

Everyone go watch this perfect flick asap or get your balls shot off!!!

I couldn't love this movie as much as I wanted to, is it too much to ask for a movie like this to be more than just a parody/spoof on the movies that it pays homage to? I feel like I'm watching scary movie or something.

Rutger Hower was rad, but it just feels too much like a fanboy wankfest for me.

I heard "The FP" was supposed to be a little bit more sincere of a tribute/homage to 70's/80's action/cult films (which was also debuted at SXSW) but can't say I've seen either yet.

I agree. I think if you're gonna do it, don't make it a joke. It can be funny without it being a joke or a parody, and still hold up and be awesome as well. I haven't seen "Hobo..." yet but I see what you're saying already.

This movie was amazing, it does what every good movie should do, gives you emotion...
I don't know if anyone here ever watched the early 90's trappings from Greg Araki, such as Nowhere or the Doom Generation, but it felt like that, only instead of dealing with some whiny gen-xer's you had the old man who was the star of the show, a sort of what if Grandpa got pushed to far, and not from a culture clash, but from every immoral act you can imagine...

The acts (not acting BTW) are borderline cheesy, but the goriness more than makes up for it, as well as the amazing performances...

A+

Post Re: hobo with a shotgun....
Saw this last night, certainly a crowd pleaser and not as offensive (to fans of exploitation) as I feared.
It is quite knowing, noddy winky, but for the most part that is sufferable, could do with a spot of editing, but definitely good fun and no doubt Jason knows his shit, very 80s Italian/Bronx Warriors sort of feel.
My two main gripes are the script was far too tongue in cheek, it would have played better if it was done straight. And the worst thing about it was the entire film was shot in high contrast orange and blue which actually hurt my eyes, like the pic above, it was just too much.
For more on the orange and blue invading our films:

All in all, it should give everyone what they want. It's quite good.
It could have hit House of the Devil status if they played it straight.

And it's waaaaaaay better than Troma.

Really? I thought that HOBO played it quite straight, despite all of the insanely gory over-the-topness - there were some scenes that I actually found really tender and almost touching (mostly thanks to Hauer, who is just brilliant in this in my opinion).

As for the look, that oversaturated Technicolor and expressive lighting reminded me more of classic Argento than the abominations mentioned in that (very good) article:

Anyway, I absolutely loved HOBO; and that Mondo poster is insane... :D

Well, yes... I'd say they were walking a very fine line between plain '70ies-ridiculousness and heartfelt pathos there (just like in the scene where he gives the monologue to the infant's ward or Dunsworth's speech to the angry mob), but Hauer actually managed to pull it off and make it work - at least for me. I actually think those scenes provided a great contrast to all the hysteria and bloodletting and prevented the whole thing from just becoming a Troma-esque gorefest.

Watched this last night with a bunch of friends at a small house party, and it was AWESOME !!

SO many moments when we had to stop, rewind, and slow mo just to see what happened. So over the top and without regard to who gets killed.

Hobo with a shot gun and Black Dynamite would make the perfect double feature !
