Post Sculpting Tool Tutorial?
Hey guys, so I plan on picking up sculpting this summer, hoping to maybe cast a resin toy one day. I'm about to purchase some Super Sculpy Firm, but I should buy sculpting tools as well! Do you guys know any good tutorials on what tool does what? Or perhaps care to share your own techniques on using tools?

Thanks!

Sculpting tools are weird, every sculptor has their own unique pieces. I pretty much use only 3 tools to do everything, and 1 I re carved to edge to be where it's at.

You sort of just have to buy a few and see what you like.

Yeah, don't forget the brush and Turpentine. I use a brush more than any tool. Also heavily use the exacto. And have begun doing a lot of carving and dremeling to baked hard clay.
I actually prefer the cheap plastic tools myself. I've never enjoyed metal tools.

Really I guess anything is a tool, crumpled tin foil, textured fabric. I've made texture stamps before, The neo-gorilla is a prime example of a little texture stamp in use on top of the brow- the little bump pattern.

I've got small metal tools, large wooden tools, a couple rubber "brushes", and a couple tools I made out of Magic Sculpt. I probably use 2 or 3 of each type but the sets came with a lot more.

I have to agree with Rich...there is no right or wrong tool, its what works for you and the material your using. It really can be anything, from a toothpick to a rice paddle! I personally like the feel of wood over metal if I'm working with clay. However, cheap dental tools you can find online are perfect when working with wax.

I always like to work with my hands as long as i can first then finish the details with tools, but again it all depends on what kind of look your going for.

Hit up your mom's kitchen - lots of good/weird utensils to choose from that can open up ideas and creativity. just don't tell her what your using them for :)

That book is really amazing... I just read through it a couple days ago at B&N. It has a lot of good info on doing things the right way... It's written mainly for the superhero enthusiast, but it's still good information if you use it towards whatever you want to create. It has a lot of info on wax molding as well...

I bought a huge wax carving set on Amazon for under $10. I use only 3-4 but occasionally pick up the others.

Hit up Koby's SM and pick up some dental tools. They can be found for fairly cheap there. Also a good place to pick up dremil bits and other things to assist your sculpting adventure. But it is all individual preference, practice and getting the feel for how you want to approach sculpting . Also making your own tools is a plus! Custom design them for what you want to do.
