No doubt you have an awesome job, and are great at what you do. But, are you actually proud of your designs? When you sketch up the Mongers are you like "Hell yeah! These fucking rule!" ?
I look at your merchandise and I see about 5 minutes of design time. It seems like you make a quick sketch and that's the end of your design work. From there it goes to a sculptor who does all the work. I know most people use other people to sculpt their concepts - but their concepts look like they actually took a bit of time. Take a look at your sketches that you post on your forum...beyond those, what do you do? Or these Mao busts - do you just tell someone "Put a nicked set of Mickey ears on him and stick a cig in his mouth"?
I know there's a lot more to the business than just coming up with the design - but what you do just seems so lazy. I really am interested in what you do (design-wise) beyond the sketches you post on your forum - my curiosity is as sincere as my hate for your toys. As is my admiration for your business sense...

its way harder to make the simple looking designs. I do full 6 views etc all by hand.
try it sometime. its not as easy as it looks.
I am not a sculptor, so indeed, I use pros.
I do make real elaborate scratchbuilt mechanical things though, but those are not part of the 'production toy world'.
I am always trying to make the designs as simple as possible, as the really really simple ones always seem to be way more popular.
I am totally proud of my stuff.
I have been able to release over 100 different toys since 2003, and many more to come. It was a dream and now its reality.
and thus far, they toy thing has been like...ultra-successful as far as I am concerned.
I have to turn down offers.
I have been a full time graphic designer for nearly 25 years.
I am no 'artist'. I am a full time self employed graphic designer.
deal with it.

I love the mongers.
technically, to do the mongers I ended up doing about 120 finished technical drawings
all in proportion and so one.
and 13 'hero' drawings
so a total of 133 finished drawings, all of which where scanned in and then
set up as color and pattern spec sheets, 6 per figure
so that was a total of about 79 master files .
and none of the digital work was run on scripts, its all 'hands on' vector.
and layouts and templates created for the individual boxes, the master carton etc.
all in all the mongers took about 180 hours to do. Thats actually hands on time.

 Preston Blair
I am curious about this Preston Blair license...... Does the estate get a cut of the profits? Or are you just paying the estate for the name? Or did you set this up to pay the estate back for all of the images of his you "graphic designed?

The Blair Estate gets a % of figure profits. Normal license deal.

the thing I find interesting/telling is that here we have an artist signed up under his own name getting lambasted by a buncha faceless folks under assumed handles. Now there's some balls.
Anyone heard the title track to William Shatner's "Has Been" album?
For the record (not that I think anyone gives a rat's ass, mind you), my name is Corey Edwards and that ugly mug I'm presently using as an icon is my own (I'm mucho handsomer in real-life, however)

Yeah I never really have understood the 'anonymous' aspect of these sorts of things, but its cool with me. Its easy to criticize when you yourself are hidden away...so I dont really take the hate too seriously.
But, sitting in the studio all day gets boring so I tend to post on lots of forums, feels less isolated that way. Multitasking,if you will.
Ironically, I have very good relationships with all the japanese toy makers you guys love. And like Flynn and ramos etc...
now..if they start to hate on me, then I'll take it seriously,as I actually know them and what they do etc.

to be honest,... I don't understand the hate myself. The man is a major player in an industry where we're fans of. He wants to put out these toys, (might not be for us) more power to him. Can't we all just get along?
