 Re: netflix instant thread.
I agree that the Netflix price hike isn't a big deal.I still think streaming is too cheap & its only a matter of time before that goes up.
Even with the new dvd prices it still comes out to about a $1 a disc.Redbox isn't worth the gas & hassle unless you work near one.
The only thing good about Hulu + is the deal they made with Criterion .They have/will have their entire library of films commercial free.I'm thinking about getting it for a couple months just for that.

Blockbuster tried to do this (drive people away from DVD rentals through the mail) and it killed them. I know I was one to leave, and I went right to Netflix. As one screwed in the past, I'm kinda pissed to see it happening again with this company. From what I read, its not that they are losing money. Its just a way to make more profit. That's certainly their choice, but I suspect it will hurt them more than it will help them. I've had Jan Svankmeijer's Alice on DVD for a few years, but never got a chance to actually see it. One day - maybe soon now that you reminded me.

Hulu+ will probably be worth it in september for the premiering nbc shows on top of criterion stuff (and yeesh, lack of ads).
The price hike is completely understandable.. what I don't get is why it seems like they're stepping away from the dvd game by separating it from streaming.

Wow really? I think the streaming has a good amount of stuff and there's never anything I want that's on only DVD. Then again, I don't count Netflix as my sole source for movies.

I was perusing netflix last night, seems like nearly every 60's biker movie ever made is on there now (streaming) including a bunch of unknown Beach Party style movies, Hammer horror...all kinds of weird stuff. I don't like the new format though.

 Re: netflix instant thread.
I have had and loved Netflix for years. Most of what I want to watch is indeed not available on streaming. I was not happy to see this increase either since I've been through several price increases and only one decrease, from my memory. I think that I'm going to be dropping streaming too so that I can have a cheaper price for my mailed DVDs.

 Re: netflix instant thread.
The new format sucks. So many times I forget something and end up starting to watch it as opposed to seeing what it is. The splitting of the streaming from the dvds, b/c lets face it it isn't a price hike, its totally changing how the service is handled and billed, is insane. Re: netflix instant thread.
^ indonesian action flick?! looks amazing. would have loved to see some donnie yen action mixed in there. i'm ashamed to admit that i hadn't watched "the man who knew too little" and "videodrome" in full until recently. i can't believe i had put off such masterpieces for so long. netflix streaming still has some life left in it. cancelled the dvd portion of my service, which saves me $2 a month now. so it's not all bad news. Kingboy D wrote: I've had Jan Svankmeijer's Alice on DVD for a few years, but never got a chance to actually see it. One day - maybe soon now that you reminded me. for me, this is by far the best version of alice on film. it's even more engrossing on the big screen, so ask your local art theater to host it if you get the chance. once watched, it will take a permanent seat in your mind. "said the rabbit." if anyone here likes saccharine sweet k-dramas, i recommend "lie to me" (not the american tv show with tim roth). it's the least tear-jerking, cancer-ridden, marriage-blocked, depression-inducing one i've seen in a very long time, which makes it quite enjoyable for those who grew up with k-dramas.

 Re: netflix instant thread.
Hah, I just had a buddy of mine emailing me about The Raid. I'm not usually a big fan of HK or Indonesian action flicks, but I may give it a try. Funny you mention all the K-dramas, as I've been watching City Hunter non-stop lately, averaging about 1 episode every 2 days. Anna only watches some of the times, which means she doesn't keep up with the story at all. Whenever she walks in/looks up during cutesy lovey scenes, she doesn't know whether to laugh at me or roll her eyes I've got Lie To Me, Playful Kiss, and Boys Over Flowers all in the queue too - but I haven't watched any of them yet. (also, doesn't cancelling your DVD portion actually save you like $7 or $8? That's what the pricing for EACH service is now, right?)

Crab Rangoon wrote: (also, doesn't cancelling your DVD portion actually save you like $7 or $8? Re: netflix instant thread.
I canceled and I can't understand people saying 60% price increase with no new content is okay. Not only did they hike the rates but then they lost a bunch of streaming content. So you have to pay more for less. Imagine that $100 toy just shot up to $160.00 but no longer comes with one arm. Not only all of this but they just had a price increase a few months previous. Add to this Netflix saying they don't care what customers want or think and yea.... I already miss streaming but besides some good Goji flix and a few 80's comedies I'm not missing much.

 Re: netflix instant thread.
i forgot to mention that i also watched "rubber" and "hobo with a shotgun" recently. "rubber" was meh (too self-referential and hipster "ironic," although that seemed to be its entire point) other than the filmmakers' ability to give a tire so much personality. on the other hand, "hobo" was fantastic in every way.
there's quite a bit on netflix streaming that's pure gold as long as you're willing to dig deep.

For those kind of price hikes they should be adding streaming content, not losing it. Streaming will be worth more when one company can manage to give you a solid range of content including new, old, obscure and mainstream.

 Re: netflix instant thread.
Aside from downloads there's still no better choice. Cable is stupid and for $8 just for streaming what I can't understand is complaining. It's like complaining if Ramen noodles went from .75 to $1.25, big whoop. Also, in my personal case, I never ever ever ever used the DVD service, so it didn't matter, I know I'm not the majority on that.
I think a misconception is "THEY'RE" cutting these things like Disney and Sony and Starz. Not the truth. They WANT them, but all of those companies are saying that it's not worth it for them to be part of Netflix in the HOPES people will go buy, brand new, their DVDs.
I have family who works inside with some of those companies like Sony and Fox. They say that their product isn't worth a $1 Redbox rental or Netflix and that people will "have" to buy their products. That sounds like they're BEGGING for piracy. Begging. Who the hell is going to pay $15 for something they've never seen vs. renting? No one. So Netflix will lose some customers cause they're losing the studios (who have hated them from day 1 honestly) and the studios will lose money because people aren't going to pay for a new DVD/BluRay they haven't seen and just pirate it and the 2 are going to have to learn to work together to make a better product WORTH a price hike. Or the internet's gonna steal all their shit, more so then already.
Wasn't it Fox? They pulled all their brand new programming from the free Hulu service to only their paid Hulu service then that week Fox shows got pirated 300% more? I gotta look it up, something like that though.
I'm not sucking up on Netflix, lots of issues still, but I just don't get the anger over something so cheap.
One more note, if you just don't like the selection then no argument, totally drop it. I only keep it because I like the selection. There's nothing to talk about on that front.
And because I want this post to be stupid long, I've been watching "Louie" "Home Movies" "Dr. Who" and lots of National Geographic lately. Still gotta get on "Hobo with a Shotgun".

 Re: netflix instant thread.
It's not just about the cost though, it's about appreciating your customers. The rate hike was to much percentage wise and they are loosing content (I know it's not by choice) but what lost my business was their comments. I will not give my money to some ass clown that doesn't believe customer satisfaction matters. I don't go all over the internet bitching but I do occasionally say something about it. There are plenty of services trying to get their foot in the door and I think Netflix acting the way they did really opened that up. Time will tell if anyone else really steps up to the plate.

The studios hate them and don't want to deal with them and tons of customers are getting pissed at them. Something's gotta change, they have no where to go really especially since others are trying to get into the game more.
