I recently got super sculpey and finally tried using it today, along with some tools. At first I was going to do an ogre, but didn't really like my drawings, so I decided to try to make a copy of one of my favorite sculpts: Boss Carrion! I only did a first draft of the head so far, not sure if I will try to modify the existing head or make a completely new one. The head is flat on the bottom and is about 2/3 the size of the regular Boss head. The tusks of mine are pretty much the same size as the original. It's made completely out of super sculpey

I think I did a pretty good job for the first time and in a fairly short amount of time (maybe 1.5 hours, I wasn't really keeping track of time). I think I had the most trouble with the eyes and the area above them, and the mouth. Things to improve on: lower the eyes, make the face even higher than the ears like the original, work on the details on the left side of the face so it doesn't look so messy, and make it look happier I will probably try to do something less detailed next

Any feedback or tips? Can I leave it as it is and reuse the super sculpey in a few days without any problem?

I'd love to see bootleg sculpts of the toys we all collect, I know for a fact that I have a le merde burgerbuns full size that I sculpted.

Also if you have a Hobby Lobby by your house, they have some decent cheap sculpting tools there. This looks pretty good for a first try, I keep my sculpts in a tuperware when I know I won't be working on them for a couple days. Personally though I like a dryer sculpt to work with.

Thanks for the advice! I'm not sure if there are any Hobby Lobby's around in Orlando or Baltimore but there are art supply chain stores and other independent stores. I got a set of tools already that I was experimenting around with - I might also make some tools myself. I stuck the Boss head in a ziploc bag for now - have to get some extra tupperware next time I go shopping

Tip. Mix your super sculpy with sculpy firm, it will make the clay firmer. It will help in not smudging your details. Also you can work on part of the sculpt bake it so it becomes hard them work on other parts of the sculpt without ruining the details you just worked on. I have to do this, I have big fingers and I always end up smudging something

Is there a certain ratio for super sculpey/sculpey firm? I don't think the oven in my apt is that great but someone on flickr mentioned using a hairdryer for finished parts

Try equal parts of SS/SF and see how you like it. It really is up to you. Some people like to use only SF, but that is too tough for me. Before Sculpery Firm was available in my area, I was mixing half a small black bar of regular sculpey (which is pretty firm) into a full bar of SS just to get a nice gray (makes it easier to see details) and I really liked the consistency. It was still soft and smoothable, but not so easy to deform and leave fingerprints as when it is just SS.

Nice to see that its not all the artists on this board that will jump all over your head when you you try to learn a new technique by reproducing their work ! Nice Boss head, don't give up ...if you pull that off on your first try theres some good stuff for you on the horizon !

Paintbrushes and rubbing alcohol will help smooth out the clay when you finish it off as well, I like to bake pieces a little and then go back in and fill gaps and holes, as well as sand. Than finish off my baking...

try to use zippo fuel instead of alchool it works very well

Zippo fuel eh... Sounds like a bad combination for my smoking ciggerette, sculpting toys, routine. Just playing around, I'm really going to have to try that. What do you use to apply?

use a simple brush better if bristles are synthetic.

Fuel and sigarettes are a good combination i have you same routine, to prevent explosion i suggest to put a little amount of fuel in a little cup and keep the tin of fuel closed to prevent evaporetion.

Thanks again for all the tips everyone! I'm trying to sculpt human faces right now. I really like Greek/roman marble sculptures and am trying to emulate them. Once I get more experience sculpting I will think about smoothing for baking

I was able to get ahold of sculpey firm at artsystems in Florida and they even have a student discount! And it turns out there is a new Hobby Lobby in Orlando. Humongous store but no sculpey firm I mixed half and half and it works well
