Post Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Sloth'n'Moth: 8/22/11
Such a fun little figure! Trying to work with the yellow vinyl...went with some real light sprays..brushing in the details; claws, cup, moths, etc.

Still gotta do a few little things and give it a clear coat.

Post Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Ironbelly Bop Dragon: 8/31/11
My second attempt to ruin a Bop Dragon. Last time I went with a rub/spray style. On this one, I wanted to take things in a different direction...a little looser and more expressive. I'm pretty happy with the results.

Thanks, dude.

Before I painted it, it was the green one.

Also, Ironbelly and the Pocket Killer are now up in my shop.

Holy shit, this looks so good! I typically love your style of painting up all of these figures... but I think it works particularly well on this guy.

I figured that this sculpt would take this kind of paint app really well...lots of textures and details to work with.

Pretty sure this is drybrushing, and not a rub (Dustin?)...

The difference is that in drybrushing this piece, you would start with the black base, and pick up some of the flesh-colored paint on a soft, thick, rounded brush. The brush would then be wiped on a rag to leave a bare minimum of paint on the bristles, then worked over the contours of the figure, lightly and quickly. The pink color would slowly build up on all the raised parts by repeating this process as many times as necessary to achieve the desired coloration. If it were a rub, you'd do the opposite (kinda): you'd start with a solid flesh-colored base, paint over it with a solid black, and then take a cloth (damp with some sort of paint solvent, like rubbing alcohol) and rub all over the toy with it. This would take the black off of all the raised areas of the sculpt, revealing the pink underneath. This would look very different than drybrushing; the pink would come through in fairly solid, defined patches, and would not have the gauzy/frosty/more well-blended look you see here.

Yeah, this is drybrushing. Pretty much exactly as Ungawa222 described.

Started with black. Then, progressive layers a flesh/purple-pink mix. With each layer, I use less purple-pink in the mix (and even add a bit of off-white) so that by the end of it, everything blends together and I achieve the value and contrast that I want.

The details are done after with a paintbrush...staples, eyes, teeth. I used a watered down red for the inside of the mouth and the for the little gaps between the staples.

The progression looks like this:

Rubs can be used to achieve great effects as well. I just felt like I'd have more control doing it this way and that it would produce a great effect on this figure in particular. Great details and textures to explore/emphasize for a toy this size. Lots of charm, too, for such a yucky little guy.

Pretty much using only the airbrush, it's cool to see what other techniques (especially ones I wouldn't think of) can produce.
Already said it but love this paint job. Works with the texture perfectly.
