Amazing movie. I also recently saw his film "Pitfall," a great and very strange ghost story. Come to think of it there are countless Japanese ghost story movies that would be good to see this month. Good time to revisit "Kwaidan."

My earliest memory of the bandaged face image is seeing Claude Rains as "The Invisible Man" on old Creature Features broadcasts. Then later "Eyes Without A Face" and a moment in "Birdy" when Nick Cage's character realizes that his war injuries are permanent. Mummy Boys!
I thought about Eyes Without a Face when considering wrapped up horrors, but it's been a few years since I've seen it
and this porcelain number...

The crazy crepe paper nuns in Alucarda inhabit the same part of my brain.

Genuinely nutso film. I couldn't get it out of my head for weeks after I first saw it.

Great call on Kwaidan

The Woman of the Snow segment gets me every single time.

edit: My nuns keep disappearing!

Post Re: A month of Horror movies!
One spring afternoon in 1984, in my homeland of north Jersey, I went with my aunt Kathy and cousin Gary to downtown Rockaway, where Kathy was going to get a haircut. Gary and I sat in the beauty parlor (do they even use that term anymore? That's what they were called back then...), pawing through magazines and feeling a bit bored. "You know, they're filming a movie just down the street..." said Kathy's stylist. "Why don't you guys go check it out?"

So Gary and I walked down to the main intersection in town, where a flatbed eighteen-wheeler was parked. The bed was loaded with oil barrels that looked as if they were bubbling over with slimy green ooze. We walked around the back of the truck to find a large group of people in gym attire standing in a circle. We quickly realized that these people were actors, as they were being loudly prepped for the next scene by a director and crew. By now Gary and I were basically standing in the outermost ring of the circle of actors; no one seemed to notice us. A guy in a pink tutu, covered in the same green slime that oozed from the barrels, took a spot on the ground in the center of the circle. To our amazed 10-year-old excitement, everyone hushed and the director yelled “Action!” The guy on the ground began to twitch and writhe furiously, as all the slick health club denizens laughed and mocked him…

Just your average day in Jersey!
I gotta say, it was a really Tromatic experience...

Ha I own both of these on DVD! Just watched House the other day. Very bizarre. I really liked Kung Fu running around in her underwear

Need to break out all my horror DVDs since I don't own cable. Every year I always ask myself what is worth buying on DVD (to add to my collection) around Halloween that will really scare me? Nothing really ever does, and this makes me sad.

I did. I didn't hate it, but also didn't love it. I'll keep watching.

Totally! It was an interesting experience… only, I did get one thing wrong: it was downtown Boonton, not Rockaway, as confirmed by this site’s info on the filming locations:

I can totally imagine 2 kids wandering onto the set of a Troma movie and making it into the final cut of the film with no one noticing.

Awesome story!

Made-for-TV... really great creature design/make-ups by Stan Winston in that one!

Post Re: A month of Horror movies!
This thread gives me the perfect excuse to give a nod to one of my favorite podcasts of all time:

Image

Mondo Movie did a great job of bringing to attention a TON of really interesting cinema over the years, from the most extreme trash to the cream of arthouse oddities, and did so in a very intelligent and engaging way. The hosts covered lots of films I've known and loved for a long time, and hipped me to even more that I might never have known about if not for their efforts. The mix of coverage of current and upcoming genre film with comprehensive looks into it's history is unparalleled, as far as I'm concerned, and they did it all without a whiff of snootiness. Good stuff.

It's on a seemingly permanent hiatus right now, but the full catalog of over 100 excellent shows is archived for free on their site.

Love this movie. The sequels are pretty shitty though.

I was actually going to post these, Sleepaway Camp rules, I will never forget the first time I saw that ending. Honestly, it is one of those things you never want to give away. Movie genius right there. The sequel was okay, but I'll definitely agree the third was crap.

@backtrack - Last I heard Ben and Dan said that they were working on some super secret other project, which is good news, but would probably only return to the podcast for the occasional Fright Fest special or similar occasion-specific things. I can't grudge them that but certainly wish they had time for more.
Image
I've checked these guys out and they're really pretty good. I was thinking of mentioning them earlier but figured I'd gone on long enough already about Mondo Movie, and I've only checked out about half of their shows so far. I'll have to catch up on the new boys this weekend.

Definitely worth a listen - thanks for mentioning it!
