Starts tonight! I cant fuckin wait! They do the whole 'artists background and check out their studios and stuff' deal so that should be awesome. hopefully we get to see some airbrush action on camera sometime in the season.

Didn't even know this show existed but it sounds like a fun guilty pleasure. Hopefully the contestants will be even weirder than those on "Top Chef: Just Desserts." "Work of Art" looks like a bit of a Piece of Work ... Sarah Jessica Parker as a guest? What does she have to do with creativity? yetiman2196 wrote: when is it on? Wednesdays, starting tonight. And it seems theyre going the "top chef" route this time, by having more accomplished artists on rather than just some random folks like some of the contest shows out there. I thought the first season was gonna be so shitty but it was a good watch.

The show is exactly as you say, Dean - a fun guilty pleasure. I'd never heard of it myself but came across it last year when I was out from work with a back injury. Total immobility led me to having a look at a lot of broadcast stuff I wouldn't have seen otherwise, and Work of Art was as close to a gem as I found. It's an eye roll to be sure, but way more engaging than any other "reality" show I've had the general misfortune to be subjected to. Nobody sings, nobody dances, and the only "cover versions" are visual!

Aha, that's typical of Bravo's money-saving tactics (which is not necessarily a dis.) I have a friend in L.A. who produces reality shows ... it's amazing what they do to keep costs low and residuals high. I've seen some of his pre-broadcast pitches to potential advertisers ... they've got it down to a science. It's all pretty obvious to the audiences ... constant product placement as part of the competitions, endless recycling of guests who are willing to receive low compensation in return for high profile exposure. It's not all bad I guess. I don't mind seeing Wylie Dufresne, Eric Ripert and Hubert Keller out of relevant context over and over again ... they're good TV. Anyway the "art toy" angle here should be interesting. More mainstream than ever I guess.

^^ I meant the contestants as well. Top chef always brings in chefs that seem to be somewhat accomplished already, and it looks like they are doing that with Work of Art.

Re: Sucklord to Compete on Bravo’s ‘Work of Art’ Season 2
OK, that was pretty fun. Nice surprises: - De Pury was very likable. His encouragement seemed sincere à la Tim Gunn and his criticisms spot on. - Sucky's bad lounge lizard getup during the judging segment. Wonderful. - Some of the art was actually pretty darned good, surprising given the deadline format. If the judges thought the racially provocative piece was too obvious, they'd probably hate Travis Sommerville's work. I was glad to see Ugo go first. He should have ditched that thing as soon as De Pury told him it was too derivative of Haring. To my eye it looked more like a type of gallery-oriented contemporary art from the 1970s that hasn't aged well, but whatever ... it didn't work. I think Sucklord's self-criticism was exactly right. His piece was "cute" but there was no extra layer of significance there. It just looked like garage sale fan art without his usual cynical/parodic element. Very enjoyable show overall, even if it stuck to the Magical Elves formula religiously. Looking forward to the rest of the season. "His sword is called Glamdring. Go back to the shadows. You can't pass."

Did you see the previews of next few episodes? ". . . a Man, or. . . a Sucklord" Good to see that the Sucklord will have an interesting photo shoot coming up. Let's see how long it takes him to get kicked off the show. Sarah Jessica Parker? You got to be kidding.

If they use the word "deconstruct" one more time I'm going to pull my hair out. Looks like The Sucklord just might hook up.

His critique was hilarious. I liked when they said something to him about it having no meaning or something and he was like "aww you got me, I think I'm gonna die now..." I was cracking up.
He kept it real though with laying it down how sometimes art is just cool looking and doesnt need a meaning. but it was still pretty bad.

Sucklord is fortunate one of the judges understood his perspective.
my favorite moment was when he said the piece had his signature spray and the judges were like "wtf is that?!"
also, when the Tim Gunn guy attempted to call him Morgan =P

Especially since they have all of their regular materials available in the studio. Maybe working together in the same studio is too much pressure for them? Or they feel like experimenting? Hmm... I need to wait until the second episode is available on one of the semi-legal outlets. WOA2 is not available to me on the Bravo website.

I haven't seen the show, but maybe they're actually trying to make it as artists rather than one-trick ponies. I think of "artists" like Luke Chueh, Ledbetter, (KAWS! even though I like his earlier work), etc and can't believe that they still churn out the same crap. I'd classify Chueh/Ledbetter as illustrators, rather than artists (and KAWS as a designer at this point). I like how Dalek changed as an artist - didn't much care for him as Dalek, but enjoy his work as James Marshall.
