Re: A month of Horror movies!
Nice one Ungawa! Have fun. Hausu never fails to please a crowd, aside from Blood Feast, that's probably the only other one I would happily screen again.
Fulci's great, I'm doing House by the Cemetery next month, and did The Beyond a couple months ago. The Beyond with an audience takes on a whole new life.
That Dead film is terrible and the directors are twats. The film is beautiful to look at and the first half hour of it is great, and then the main actor makes an attempt at doing his job, i.e. acting and fails miserably. I was really disappointed because it seemed like the chance was there for them to bring something new to the genre and all they managed to pull off was a slightly racist and totally colonial, bland zombie film.
I watched the original theatrical print of My Bloody Valentine last night, wow! What a difference some cuts make. Having most recently seen the new uncut version I'd forgotten what was missing. Great flick though.

Well as we all know trailers can definitely mislead one into thinking a movie could be good. I'll wait to see it online (besides won't play anywhere near me).
@ alife- I did see Stakeland last spring online somewhere. It was very well put together I thought.

For those of you with DVRs in your life there's still time to catch an entire evening's worth of Val Lewton productions on TCM. Giddy up! Just had a look at Cat People for the thousandth time

Re: A month of Horror movies!
Watched "Island of Lost Souls" last night ... the super-nice new Criterion edition (which comes with some DEVO extras!) Can you believe this is the first time I've ever seen the film? Jeez. Anyway as expected both Karloff and Laughton are fantastic, and the movie is still SERIOUSLY CREEPY after all these years!

I've never seen this one either; can't wait to get my hands on the Criterion release!

Re: A month of Horror movies!
Don't feel bad, Dean - it wasn't easy to see AT ALL until less than a week ago! I don't know when I would have even known a thing about the film if an old roommate's boyfriend hadn't brought over a bootleg video of it back in the early nineties. I've been obsessed with finding a quality copy of it ever since and, truth told, the few prints I've tracked down since didn't do much to improve on the quality of that original video tape. Until now I shrieked like a girlie when I saw that Criterion was putting the work in on this deserving biscuit, and what I can't believe is that I forgot all about it until you made this post! I even rewatched the film last weekend but managed not to remember that it was almost the eve of it's first decent release EVER. Never bettered, and still my favorite Laughton role.

Re: A month of Horror movies!
Speaking of cat people how is it that Lota the Panther Woman in "Lost Souls" looked so much better than any of the male hybrids? Now I really wanna see the 1996 interpretation "Island of Dr. Moreau" with Marlon Brando stumbling around mumbling and Val Kilmer looking like he'd rather be anywhere else. Never seen that one either but it's supposed to be downright surreal in its awfulness.

Re: A month of Horror movies!
It was AWFUL but it went nicely with grass at the time. We only checked out the whole thing a couple of times, but certain scenes got some heavy rotation back in '96 and '97.

Re: A month of Horror movies!
I checked out Jerzy Skolimowski's The Shout again tonight. Still one of the most quietly strange films I have ever seen. Makes a fine companion to Nic Roeg's Don't Look Now. If you've never seen it HURRY UP and do it!!! When I finished the films I was shocked to see that Repulsion was being screened on TCM. All in all a good night spent shunning parties.
