 Re: iPhone 4s
I’d love to get the iPhone 4s if I did’t live in the U.S. Sorry, but the plans they offer here in the U.S. are horrible and really ream the end-user. Other countries have it so much better in terms of options. For example, the perfect iPhone plan for me would be 100% no data, but cell service and SMS. I live in NYC so if I really need to get online, I can walk a few blocks and find someplace I can get free WiFi access right away. But you can’t get an iPhone without a data plan from anyone. And even if you go the hacker route and buying an unlocked iPhone, AT&T still tracks you and will force you onto a data plan (!!!) even if you don’t need one. Horrible. I know it sounds silly, but you know give me an option to buy an iPhone outright at full price and use it as a “Go Phone”/pre-paid phone and I am 100% there. Tons of folks do that on Android phones and Blackberries, but you can’t do it with an iPhone. Ridiculous. So I’m using an iPod Touch and thinking of getting a MiFi from TruConnect that is a pay-as-you-go 3G-to-WiFi service to hack my own little pocket network. The new MiFi routers are smaller than an iPod Touch and lets you hook up any WiFi device. Mix Skype into that and it’s a great alternative for a light user… But no Siri for me then

 Re: iPhone 4s
Siri is pretty funny but my accent is really throwing it off loads, which is funny but also a little annoying
The camera is great though I have taken some great shots with it, well worth the upgrade but I did have the 3GS

Haven't had a cell phone or landline since 2003.
Kinda surprised at the MONTHLY charges:
Verizon $69.99 to $169.99 AT&T $54.99 to $134.99 Sprint $79.99 to $109.99

I use her daily many, many times. I will also say this though, my wife's mom just purchased a 4S and has never used a smartphone in her life. Having Siri available has made the transition so much easier for her. She texts and the whole 9 yards now because all she has to do is talk to the phone. She loves it!

 Re: iPhone 4s
@MicromanZone, You might want to double check, I'm pretty sure some of your ideas on the iphone service have recently become outdated. I'm doing a lot of checking right now, and as long as you purchase the phone, you can use it as a pay as you go, with at&t, with a little creative engineering, (and that's without jailbreak, hacks, or breaking into your phone manually).

 Re: iPhone 4s
Well, I am not in the headspace to really research anymore. I did finally get a TruConnect MiFi. It does feel very slightly awkward to carry another small piece of electronics around, but it’s basically a WiFi router so I can use it with any WiFi capable device and I basically just had to pay the fee for the router, $5 per month and 3.9 cents per megabyte used. Nothing else. If I got an iPhone with data-plan and tethering that would easily be $100 a month just for that. This MiFi gives me more flexibility for a lot less.
That said if Apple does release an iPod Touch with 3G networking capability like the iPad, I would seriously consider getting one. Voice contact on the go is not that important to me anymore and Skype is a decent alternative. I just need the ability to quickly check e-mail and other messaging services on the go so a non-phone device with 3G is perfect.
I actually hear a lot of Verizon & T-Mobile stores are marketing their version of the MiFi (all with contracts but still less than a full iPhone contract) as a similar alternative to the contract plans.

 Re: iPhone 4s
@Microman So what is a normal monthly bill like for you? I'm still not completely sure how MB use is tallied.

 Re: iPhone 4s
Do you mean using TruConnect? I paid a one time cost to buy a Novatel 2200 MiFi 3G-to-WiFi router from them. Then when I signed up—which was just this month—I paid $4.99 to activate & get access. No commitment beyond the month, but it’s automatically re-bills each month until you stop. Past that I simply pay 3.9 cents per megabyte I use. No limits and no max-per-month.
So if I use 1 measly megabyte per month, I pay the $4.99 plus 3.9 cents for a grand total of $5.03 cents for that month for use. If I use 10 Megabytes, I pay $4.99 plus 39 cents for a grand total of $5.48 for that month of use. If I use 100 Megabytes, I pay the $4.99 plus $3.90 for a grand total of $8.89 for that month.
Now if were to go up to 1 Gigabyte of data use, that would be a bill of $33.90 just for data and then $4.99 for access for a total of $38.89 which is not that great compared to contract monthly plans, but I am pretty sure it would be a rare day when I have to do that.
The point is I have 100% no contract, and I can use Skype with a Skype-In number to make my iPod Touch a pseudo cell phone, always have access to e-mail and iMessage, Facebook, etc... And for SMS, Google Voice does SMS in and out for free.
So after 2 years of use on an iPhone plan I would be paying around $80 per month for a base plan, and have that plan for 24 months which comes out to $1,920. With this TruConnect pay-as-you-go plan my total cost after two years would be based on whatever I use. So if I estimate 100 Megabytes per month for 2 years that is about $9.00 per month for $216 after two years. Factor in the $90 I paid for the MiFi and it’s still a pretty big difference.
I can end the plan whenever I want & resell the router if I wanted to on eBay without issue. Ditto with the iPod Touch. I can upgrade that without having to worry if I am in or out of contract. I simply have no long term ties to any hardware or any contract which is what I like.
And since this MiFi device is basically a WiFi router, I can hookup anything. So if I am on the road and need laptop access there it is.
This all depends on what your use is, but I like to have my iPod Touch as a portable messaging device that I can check on occasion. I don’t need much more.
But seriously, cell phone plans in the U.S. are 100% ripoff. SMS fees are a lie & forcing dataplans are ridiculous. And the artificial divisions phone companies place on “go phones” versus “contract phones” is nonsense. To me this plan works great.

 Re: iPhone 4s
Well, thanks to a new gig, I’ve ditched my iPod Touch/MiFi stuff I talked about above & now have an iPhone 4S. Got it with Sprint. It’s a pretty amazing piece of technology & Sprint is pretty good as far as coverage goes; speed not so much. But whatever I’m not going to stream Netflix.
