A while ago, I was trying to keep everything to one detolf. When it overflowed, I would sell stuff off. But it got to a point where there was really nothing left I wanted to sell. Then it expanded to overflow on the dresser, and I said fuck it, it's time for a second detolf. I wasn't planning on starting a second, but I just have too much stuff I couldn't see trimming it down. I just think there are a lot of good toys being released right now, and a lot of good older toys are just so cheap second hand now. I could predict things were going to kick up. So I'm trying to keep it to 2 detolfs now, but I have a feeling soon enough, I'll be in the same situation and decide it's time for a third.

I went third years ago and then I just started putting stuff on top of them. Now I need a fourth and I still think I'd have some stuff on top. Trick is risers, maneuvering arms/legs, and definitely removing pesky long tails. Detolfs get a lot of flack but if you're in a bind for space you get the most bang for your buck with them. You can squeeze a lot of toys on each shelf.

Yeah. Packing a Detolf shelf is an art form in and of itself.
I too am at 3 and in need of another. Maybe a bigger house?...

If I have any regrets it would be more from trading a figure than from selling one. I guess it would be different if I had to sell a figure to pay rent, but if I'm able to sell a figure because I'm not really feeling it anymore I can't think of any real regrets. I have made some big trades that I really wish I had some of the figures I traded still, but when I think about what I received in turn makes it all good.

Ugh, I had to dig this up and re-read through it again to help me sort out whether I want to sell or not. I'm having an urge to purge. I'm feeling like this right now:

But we were also just talking about putting a bunch of shelving up in our "work room" - and doing so would allow me to put all of my toys out, rather than a selected portion. And that might make me enjoy the clutter again.

I've spent the past 3 months starting to recollect my neo henshin collection I sold off. Remember sometimes the regret sinks in long after you would expect it.

Yeah, even if I do decide to sell stuff I won't be selling ALL of it. I'm just feeling a little anxious and overwhelmed by possessions at the moment.
Up to this point I've always felt that I'd prefer to keep, say, a Skullbrain than have the $30 I could get for it. But I just don't know if that's true currently/anymore.

NT, it's a bit of a buyers market if it's not a hyped item (which I'm sure you're aware of). I'm with you on just keeping things. What's the point of selling something so cheap and that you might want back again someday or might have sentimental value. It's good to purge but it's also good to keep toys (in storage if you don't have space- because you never know when space might open up one day).

I have always preferred to keep everything I buy. The few times I've sold stuff, I've regretted almost every single toy I've let go.

Me too! I already regret selling that M1 GID Gezora, and even had a chance to buy it again 2 weeks ago but passed- because I bought something I also regret selling from the same seller on YJA: M1 Rainbow GID Rodan. Can't wait- should be here by Friday. Merry xmas me.... :P

Post Re: collection question for long timers
I stopped collecting sofubi for quite a while. Over a year, at least, but I still kept up with what was going on here, and checking blogs, etc. At some point, certain toys actually made me want to actively participate in collecting again and the bug was back. During that dry time, I would always look at my collection spread across three+ detolfs and say 'I want all of these gone,' hence my huge sale that's been going on recently.

There are some toys that I will always hold onto, but my tastes have changed drastically since I first started collecting. I had a lot of fight figures and minis, and although I will always appreciate them and their history, they just don't do it for me anymore. I like to look at them (huge Secret Base collections are incredible), just have no desire to own them, if that makes any sense.

I'll also add that completism totally killed my collecting boner.

I can't think of a single toy I've sold or traded that I regret parting with. I have been a collector for as long as I can remember, and my tastes are in a constant state of evolution. I don't foresee that changing anytime soon.

Sorry for the necro but I just had to vent. I got bit by the Buta bug and sold off a bunch of stuff to finance it. I deeply, deeply regret that decision now and am on the brink of letting all the newly acquired stuff go.

Lesson learned. FUCK.

Onion, if you sell the new stuff, would that be not learning the lesson?

I guess you could look at it that way :P

I don't want to bore you guys with a long story. Basically I have a really strong emotional attachment to the characters in the toys that I sold, especially that version of them. The toys I bought I really appreciate as toys on their own but I have no nostalgia for them. Great sculpts, great paint app but I didn't grow up with those characters so I don't feel that kind of attachment. I don't have the funds to have both and if I had to pick I'd go with the first set. Maybe I will just slim down the non-essentials. We'll see.
