I too just lost my job of 5 years, working from home, its been the bees knees to say the least but all good things come to an end. Totally sucks, even when you think you are applying for niche positions there are 100 others thinking the same. This country is jacked. My hardcore republican boss was so "scared by the democrats" he laid off his few faithful employess, whack.

My company had just announced a so-called "re-structure" plan, I bet that is actually a "layoff" plan as well. Looking at this video, I think 50% of the total staff will inevitable losing job due to the plan in coming weeks / months. :(

Thanks guys, funny thing is my boss was a real ass about it. In any small business, if you're not giving blood these days, then it's not enough. I just sort of been giving and giving till I had nothing left. Liberating and scary at the same time. Your well wishes are greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear this man.
You've got talent so I wouldn't worry.

I'm feeling it where I am. Now I spend 40 hours a week "Justifying" why I'm here.
I believe alot of this deal is giving companies an excuse to drop people and boost their own profits, having less do more for , yup...less.... In a way it's abuse and someone needs to monitor that crap but if you're non union forget it, there's nobody to stand up for you. :|

Sorry to hear this! I wish you guys the best!

Today we had a meeting discussing how we are going to cut $1 million from our 09 budget of $10 million from the DC I work at!

CRAZY!

Being laid off has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. At first its a bit nerve racking, but you will figure out what to cut or what you can do to make it up.

I used to go out to dinner every weekend. Now we make food at home. Made me and my girl better cooks and its fun to have night in the kitchen together :)

Good luck, and I have faith you will be just fine :)

Post Re: Layoff blues
Well I finally did it. I knew it was coming after my blow up with management this past Thursday. Suffice to say I'm not one to take kindly to nit picking and bullying so I walked out (after some choice words). I get to work today and I met with my union reps. 10 weeks pay + 3 weeks vacation pay, uncontested unemployment, and no bad reference. Or I'm suspended without pay for a week, come back to work and if I even look at someone cross eyed I'm out the door without all that. I'm going with option one I think. I mean the writing is on the wall with newspapers and they're in the process of getting rid of people anyhow. While I'll miss the $17 an hr, double time and a half holiday pay, three weeks paid vacation, I'm only clocking 20 hrs a week. It's getting to be like a fucking prison camp in there.

Obviously this means no more toys for a super long time and most likely a trip back to school for me. Sucks but I see the silver lining. Not like I wanted to argue with old people on the phone the rest of my life while having management listen to my every word. :x

Funny how you post this, just got my hours cut on Friday. Fucking corporate America thinks they can just shit and fuck the everyday man over and not care. They cut my hours, then literally went and had cake. I need this job till I find something else, but came close to flipping their table over.

Sorry to hear that Chris, but like you I'm already on the way to coming up with another life plan.

Ha, yeah Rich well I do use the 'search option' here to make sure I'm not double thread posting. I remembered your thread was in here somewhere.

Yeah corporations suck ass. It's all about the bottom line not quality. They could give a fuck. They'd rather nickel and dime they're best workers, nit pick, bully you rather than say "wow you do great work here". The best part of me leaving was obviously I've encouraged others to speak out. People seemed generally sad that I was going. So many people are afraid to speak up for themselves, out of fear of losing their jobs. I look at jobs as a means to an end not the end of the world. You just have to figure out what you can and cannot deal with. This was the hard part I guess. Who knows what's next though? I like a challenge.

Sorry to hear your hours got cut. Cake? WTF?! They'll probably throw a party when I walk out after my exit meeting tomorrow. "That asshole Chris is finally leaving no more pulling teeth to get him to comply!" At least you have a creative outlet with MVH. That is something I've yet to figure out for myself in 43 years (and I've really tried).

That last part is so true. I have made a few decisions, well, because I was in front of the computer usually when I would have been elsewhere.

Its even worse that I'm no longer in my sleep cycle. I used to hit the sheets around 10 PM and get up at 6 AM. Now forget it, I'm in bed around 12:30, 1 and the get up around 9 or so. Its gonna be so hard to get back in track when I go back.

I need to break this cycle ASAP before I become the guy on the couch.

I know this is an old thread, but I am now off work for almost 4 months total for health issues, and I can tell you the exact thing is happening to me. I used to be up at 5AM every morning ready to go, now I stay awake all night and sleep in until 10AM. I can't wait to get this behind me and back to being a corporate slave.

Hey Chris, sorry to hear about your situation. It just sucks all over IMO. I work in corporate america, and I just see so much bullshit its unbelievable. Favoritism. Nepotism. Cronyism. Little bully managers who suffer from paranoia and insecurities. Just nasty fucks. I document and photocopy anything damaging or unprofessional, my folder must be about an inch thick.

I work with a guy who I call Bagel Muncher who hides in a corner reading magazines and eating bagels for breakfast. Skips out of work early, takes two hour lunches. Basically useless. Yet because the boss hired him and because he's a passive non-threatening asskisser, he has no accountability to the boss so I'm constantly doing 90% of the work to his 10%.

And my boss is a real work, major asshole with insecurity issues and a control freak and a liar. I got a merit pay increase last year, so I know I didn't get a bad review. But there was no performance review so no goals no nothing. I mention it to my boss and he says its a work in progress. Email him a second time (paper trail) and he just ignores my email.

And sleeping? All of this has sent me into a depression of sorts. I used to spring out of bed at 7am, now I try and drag myself to work by 9:30am. And weekends? I've been sleeping 15+ hours a day. It's so fucked up. I have some backup plans if I suddenly snap and walk, but I keep looking for similar work and still can't find something else.

But something is going to give as its no way to live life and life is too short...

my boss asked us all to donate $20 each so she could make a basket to be auctioned off at a charity event. Shortly thereafter, I found an envelope where she was submitting a rebate form for what she purchased with our money. I was this close to giving my 2 weeks notice on Monday... bad enough that she ignores the department to devote time to event planning, but using our donations for personal profit ? the job market is a lot better now than it has been over the last few years, best of luck everyone.

Post Re: Layoff blues
I hear you guys on the sleep issues. I use to be a night owl staying up late into the AM. Then my schedule changed last June and I had to be at work 6:30am 3-4 days a week. It sucked when the cold weather set in because I use to be able to just ride my bike in- but now I had to be up at 4:45am to catch a train. Which fucked me for sleep because the earliest I get tired is 10-11pm. Basically since November I have been working on 4-5 1/2 hrs of sleep 4 nights a week. I'm going to go out on a limb and say sleep deprivation made me one moody fuck with management and led to the arguments.

Corporate America is a joke, like liquidsky said managers are just there to enforce policy, police, and babysit. 9 out of 10 have no idea what the work truly entails and are complete dipshits who crave power. Half of your coworkers are lazy sacks of shit, and any hard work you do pretty much is never recognized and just becomes the normal expectation (or how much harder can we work you?). Ass kissers are rewarded and given cushy little assignments. It's all just one big joke. Anyone with a brain involved in this mess who has a good work ethic is just fucked.

It's good to know I'm not crazy when I see or experience shit like this. Jobs are set up for you to fail and most companies know this. There are check lists made so that if they chose they can make sure it looks like your not doing your job.

If your not doing something you yourself are your boss your at the mercy of someone who can care less about you. That scares me now more than ever. No boss cares if you've worked hard, or have been there for a long time, or if you have kids etc. If you are expendable you can always go, at any time for anything. If they make a profit off how much they save the company it could be your ass at any time.

Even paper trails are pointless, most companies have lawyers who are prepared for every scenario and to bet them you'll go broke. Even if you prove one thing they will fire you for another.

Good luck to everyone. Yes there are jobs out there but the game has changed so that they will never be the same. I laugh when they announce the job market updates. It's more than just numbers, the quality of the work environment is totally different. Just because John Q lost his day job at the local union factory and now works at Walmart to get by doesn't equate to 1 job lost 1 job filled.

Talk about sleep cycles, I work 3rd shift and on the weekends try to live a normal life. Trying to break the cycle every weekend sucks but the wife and kid don't want me sleeping all day.
