Need to find LARGE flatbed scanning service
A while back I scored a very old, very amazing Pygmon growth chart on YJA. It's about 4'x1', and came folded, so there are some fragile creases throughout. I have been calling copy and print shops all around my state, and no one seems to have a flatbed scanner that can accomodate the dimensions of this piece; many place have scanners with a rolling feed, but I'm not willing to take the chance of having the paper tear. I thought about having it photographed, but that option seems a bit to pricey, plus I want a very faithful digital copy. Wondering if anyone here could help; I could mail you the poster, insured and with delivery confirmation, and perhaps we could work out a small fee or barter in exchange.
Please give a shout if you can help! Thanks for reading!

You will probably need to abandon the scanner idea and take it to a photo house who specialize in large medium photographs for reproduction. There are a couple in Los Angeles that I'm aware of, but I can't recall their names. A lot of artists here use them for giclee production, etc. when their pieces are clearly too large to be scanned.

One way would be to scan in sections and join together in Photoshop. Its time consuming but it would be the cheapest option.

You won't find a flatbed scanner that large anywhere. And scanning in sections would probably be hazardous to your folds.

Re: Need to find LARGE flatbed scanning service
Thank you, fellows; yes, I am told such large flatbeds exist, but are very uncommon. On suggestion rec’d via PM is to check w/ university architectural depts., so I may try that… but a photography or a careful, piecemeal scan by people I can trust to handle the poster well (sorry, Kinko’s… well, no, not sorry) seem to be the best options. Here’s the face from the piece in question… one of my favorite paintings of Pygmon, ever:

Re: Need to find LARGE flatbed scanning service
i'm no expert, by any means, but my guess is that anyone who owns such a piece of hardware is going to charge you plenty for the scan to try and make their investment back on that rare, giant piece of gear that became obsolete the moment they bought it.
make the rounds with the gallery folks, there should be a reasonable giclee studio near you. and they should be very familiar with handling fragile pieces. the last time i had (3' x 4') paintings done, they gave me a great package price on prints, cd's etc...

Re: Need to find LARGE flatbed scanning service
It's actually not as expensive as you'd think to have a photograph taken of a large piece. It's in the reproduction that can get pricey depending on minimums, etc. Anyway, I don't know where you're located, but most larger cities have at least one of these studios around. I think the place in LA is called Art Worx or something like that and who I used in the past. Good luck
