I feel like, if done right, it can be something you can grow old(er) with. A nice button down Benny, some braces and some loafers or brogues are timeless.

Suddenly I have an urge to shop at Fred Perry while listening to The Upsetters.

It's pretty rare that I admit to being an ex-skin because you always have to qualify it with the "but I've always hated Nazis and racism" disclaimer and then you still get weird disapproving looks.

You know, when I first was introduced to skinhead culture, I was coming out of the punk scene. Naturally my first exposure to skins was through punk/oi! music. I copped a much harder, 80's "skinhead revival/oi!" look (white t-shirts, red braces, jeans rolled up as high as they would go) than I would as I grew older. I was always vehemently anti-fascist and anti-racist, and was well aware that most skins weren't neo-nazis, but I don't doubt that the more oi!, or as I like to call it, "meat-head" approach to being a skin would certainly be more likely to raise suspicion from the casual observer.

As I became more interested in the scene and more educated in its roots, I was exposed to more soul music, ska, rocksteady and reggae. I began to lose the tight tough-guy t-shirts and replace them with Ben Shermans. I found myself wearing boots less often, and wearing loafers and argyle socks more frequently. It's a classic, sharp look... and definitely one less likely to scream "FASCIST!" to the onlooker.

Anyway, like I said earlier, when done properly I feel like it's a classy look that anyone can grow older with. Keep the faith!

Skinheads and Straight Edge are 2 of the most misunderstood and misrepresented youth cultures ever and 2 that obviously mean a lot to me. I still run with both and probably always will. I think the 2 subcultures are more alike than they will ever know.

What's funny is I didnt start wearing a lot of FP, Ben Sherman, Merc ETC ETC until I got older. It was simply because I couldn't afford it(aside from a polo) when I was younger. Now I live in a city with Ben Sherman store and a hop,skip & a jump from the famous Posers in LA. I am regularly called, joked & referred to as Suedehead Alex by my close friends. Hence why this got posted on my Facebook wall on my birthday
