Post Pointless posts in the BST
So, once in a while I'm tired or in a crappy mood and I see something pointless in the BST and I post a comment. Most of the time, I get a few pm's saying "yeah, what a douche". Sometimes, I see other posts saying "petite, you're a douche". Now, "petite" is wrong, should be "petit". But I digress. I know a few others care (I often get several support emails), but others find it annoying. Overall, do people care or not?

Here's how I rationalize my position. I am easily annoyed by spelling mistakes, bad grammar and pointless posts. Spelling mistakes and grammar depend on your education (well, the minimal effort it takes to spot red wiggly lines), so I'll give anyone the benefit of the doubt. Not so for pointless posts. I subscribe to the BST, so every time there is a new post, I get an email. I'm not always glued to my computer, but my phone will beep and I end up checking the forum several times a day (especially if it's slow at work). I find it annoying to waste time for something inane.

Annoying posts can be divided into a few categories:

1) "Pm'd"
This one is obvious. The pm recipient will know. No one else cares.

2) "Meant to be a pm"
Choose "edit", then "delete post" instead. Tadam!

3) "Item sold"
Should be obvious as well. Edit your initial post. People will see.

4) Tracking numbers
Pretty much the equivalent to "pm'd" but from the seller.

5) "Wish I had money"
So do the 99%. Your point is?

"Great price", "gorgeous toy", etc., I can understand. While they're not useful, people, myself included, get enthusiastic. "Gah, I missed it!" can be useful, someone else selling the item might contact you. Price drops and items added notices are also totally fine, even if several people seem to purposefully drop prices by a few dollars or an item every few hours so their thread stays at the top. Which brings up an interesting point: there are an average of 4 new sales a day. You don't NEED to bump. People who come here once a week will EASILY see your thread.

I dont spend enough time here for that to bother me. Why do you have notifications sent to your phone? I would imagine that would get pretty annoying.

Some interesting thoughts Oli. I for one am probably not that bothered by the inane stuff as you, but that's not to say I don't notice it. I also don't get emails at all from here, and am thankful for it. Compared to the other senseless comments I read on a daily basis [I am looking at you CBC trolls] SB is for the most part a suprising oasis of clearheaded thought and rationality  . But I will say certainly say that I am glad to have you around and I think everyone (myself included) deserves a good nudge as a reminder of forum etiquette, even if it is all in good fun.

I am for free speech in nearly every situation, but just becuase something can be said does not mean it ought to be. I am also a strong believer in always thinking about what you say before you open your mouth, and so when you have to actually click on 'Post,' type something out, and confirm the message, it seems that in there somewhere is plenty of time to consider the value of your addition.

Toys ARE fun though. :)

Post Re: Pointless posts in the BST
i tried subscribing to posts, it did my head in. Now i just subscribe to the sales thread, but even that is getting tiring with all the unnecessary bumping lately.

I think the bumping does more harm than good. Although the BST is usually small, i doubt everyone goes back more than 4 pages deep on a weekly basis. Some posts definitely get lost when the same old threads are staying up top.

Also, regarding point 2: I've noticed that the 'delete post' option is not actually available all the time. Sometimes it shows up for me as an option when editing, sometimes it doesn't. Might be why you're seeing so many '.', 'meant to be pm' etc.

The one that bugs me is when people make negative, disparaging or snide comments about an item for sale. As someone who grew up in small business and sales, it drives me nuts. If you don't like it, that is fine. Sales are psychological whether you like it or not and no one needs help in order to not selling something. Discuss a toys shortcomings in the toy threads, not where someone is conducting business.

You can only delete your posts if no one else has posted after you - but that's usually fine if you noticed you've posted instead of pm-ing.

I have emails sent when there are new posts in the Sales thread. New email = phone vibrating.

You have a point Steven, but I'd argue that most comments on news sites are trolling and borderline abusive. The CBC is much better than most others...

And yeah, I'm very much aware I'm easily annoyed. I am faced with enough aggravation at work, I try and come to sb to relax. Ah. ;)

While I'll admit I've always hated the inane clutter posts of pm'd (which btw isn't quite as bad as it once was) and "I wish I had the cash!", I've just accepted that this is a public board and have taught myself the block it out.

Oli sounds like you want to be a mod bad though.....

Edit:

I have to go with this whole board is annoying anymore. The same lame ass 5-6 toys I don't collect are all that is talked about. More new people who only come here for the same stuff. It's all about hyped overpriced crap, and the shady practices of selling these same overpriced dumb toys. So to reiterate: hype, shady shit, a lot of sack riding and salivating, whining, nit picking. In short pretty much nothing I want to be around anymore.

I defend tracking numbers. I'd rather post once than clutter people's inboxes with multiple messages. Plus it's all out there for everyone to see that items have been shipped off and you're holding your end of the bargain as a seller.

this plus, if you just add the numbers to the original post the page doesn't get bumbed up.

I think its interesting that the option "Inane posts are annoying. Polls are annoying. The whole board is annoying" has the most votes. I get "Inane posts are annoying and polls are annoying, but "The whole board is annoying" I dont get. If you think the whole board is annoying, why come here?

Because it's like any addiction or bad habit, sometimes you don't know why you still do things that are bad for you.

I guess I'm holding out for people that use to make me laugh here, had interesting insights, dropped knowledge on me, and discussed toys that haven't been talked to death about, but most of those people have moved on :(

I think its lame that the folks that have been here for a long time complain so much about how its not like the good ol days. How the members were so much cooler and were so much more witty back then. Maybe so? But this place is what we make it. Actually its more up to the older members to set the tone of the place. If this place is annoying, its up to us to not make it that way. Maybe the folks that are burnt need a break form this board. Go enjoy life.

Im not trying to be a dick, but when I hear people complain about such trivial shit, it pisses me off. My life is so fucking stressful, I come here because toys are my happy place. I love this board. I love all the different types of people it attracts. Yeah sure there is some nonsens that goes on here, but nothing is perfect.

It can actually be pretty insulting to say that the long gone members were so much better. There's definitely some really rad dudes on here who have only been on for the past couple years, or even a shorter amount of time.

I'm not trying to be dick just stating facts. Sure there were plenty of lame people years ago also. Not every place is perfect. I too am stressed in life and no I don't come here as often for the reasons I've stated. I get tired of every time I come here people ohhhing, ahhing, and arguing about the same damn toys over an over. Nag, Gorilla Ju, Grody, the list goes on.

Collectors that don't come around anymore use to show everyone pretty diverse collections. It wasn't always about the latest and greatest, it was discovering new toys (even if they were old). Now it just seems about money driven hype. You can't argue that. I post about odd/ and or older toys whenever I get them (which isn't often anymore), mostly in vintage. No one cares because it's not Nag or whatever the hell else people are trying to score that week that's hyped.

While I'd argue that it's not so much that things have gone downhill as much as anyone getting jaded after a few years, I totally agree that posting anything with a Boss Carrion or Ollie will get twenty replies with oohs and aahs, and non-hyped toys will most often get zilch - notwithstanding that the photography will be much better (let,s not talk about the subjective "quality" of the toys here). But hey, I guess that's also a common trend. Look at Instagram. The pictures with the most "likes" are often crap. A bad case of subject matter over style.

Here's a post for you Oli:

viewtopic.php?f=30&t=43082&start=0

I try to capture the essence of the toy but unfortunately my Panasonic point and shoot goes nuts on close ups. It has a great Marco but what I see on display in the back usually does not come across once I click. I do agree with you on Instagram & Pixlr-o-Matic helping photos. That's a trend I do like.

Honestly, what a bunch of whinny geeks.  Did it ever occur to anyone that SB or RxH were the "Ollie's or Boss Carrion" of the day? Just because they are the old guard now, doesn't mean they always were. Don't tell me that shit wasn't hyped when people were dropping hundreds to get an Evil. Well, the hype that was supported by the long term community here is a big part of why there is such a disparity between the prices then and now. Collectors of anything like something new, it's part of the fun. Hearing new music (that doesn't suck), reading new books, where is the harm? I love it when someone posts collection shots and something on the shelf is completely new to me. That said, it probably isn't new to many collectors and isn't going to get pages of oohhhs and ahhs from people who already know the toy exists and have seen it already. That said, I do see obscure older toys and rare finds soliciting respect and awe from the current community. They just don't come around as often as a new release does though. It would also be nice if older collectors could realize that for someone like me, Ollie is my SB, Gargamel or RxH. It's the toy that brought me into this game in full; it helped me realize where my true passion and interest was in the toy collecting world. No one is going to bad talk being a Gargamel fanatic but there was a time when it was new and a time when it was hyped. Hell it still is hyped if we are talking any customs or zodiac pieces. Stop trying to dictate the face of a hobby and except whether you enjoy or don't, it's up to you. I'm sorry if all the cool people have moved on but Jesus, isn't this discussion as stale as 3 pages of oohs and ahhs about a NAG?

I think we are all guilty of the "ohs and ahhs" thats part of the enjoying what you love. I agree sometimes the fan boy shit gets out of hand and thats were its up to us to set the tone. I think what you miss is the fact that type of shit was put in check a lot faster back then. And it does need to be checked or else we end up with our favorite toys being unattainable. But there is a fine line. I think its awesome that indy toys can be made and the creator can come on here and hear feed back or even feel praise for what they have done. Its important part of the creative process.

I love the resin section, wich most folks on here could care less about. The ones that do care, inspire me and I enjoy chatting with them because there are not very many of us out there. NONE of my friends collect vinyl and or resin. I really have no one else but the folks here to share about that cool new deathra I got or new tricks to make resin figures.

Everyone who is replying to this thread obviously cares. So lets stop bullshitting on why this place sucks and lets just make it awesome. Put people in check when needed and I think we can make this place better then before. Change is good :D
