Clearly Nostromo was a working-class ship, whereas the ship Weyland sent out was a first-class vessel. the nostromo was a weyland yutani m-class star freighter, a very expensive piece of equipment. (42 million in adjusted dollars... and that's minus payload, of course.), and vickers said weyland put up the trillion dollars to fund the expedition to lv-233. so yeah... very different operating budgets. That was something that bothered me from the first trailer, but it now makes sense. A barge compered to a luxury yacht

 Re: Prometheus trailer
yes, that was an interesting read. But if the Engineers were not coming back to wipe us out, what was all the black goo for?
others have suggested they were coming back with the black goo to farm the xenomorhs for a galatic battle elsewhere. but they could have done that at anytime in our history.
so in the article, the black goo was to evolve us into monsters in order to make Snooki look good bay comparison?

 Re: Prometheus trailer
Maybe that was the fire that Prometheus brought to the humans. The Engineers were bringing us the black goo to make us stronger.

 Re: Prometheus trailer
Perhaps the black goo can be administered in a way that achieves different results than what you get when it seeps out of the containers? Similar to radiation. If you harness the power of radiation you can use it to make x-ray images, or giant explosions - but when radiation leaks out of containment vessels it's no longer controlled and you get very different results (mutation, death). And remember, the black goo didn't appear until the humans contaminated the environment (at least I think that's correct). I'm not convinced that the black goo was a weapon. Given that we saw containers of various sizes I'm inclined to think that they contained different things. It reminded me of Noah's Ark.
And THIS is why I thought it was a great movie. To hell with the details of the lame ancillary characters - the story was great and leaves a lot to be thought about and discussed.

Did anybody else come across this theory: http://cavalorn.livejournal.com/584135.htmlDon't read it if you haven't seen the movie. Lindelof linked it on twitter saying "I love the way you think."

 Re: Prometheus trailer
^ That's a cool writeup! I actually had a similar idea come to me about an hour after seeing the film. SPOILER: I was about to drop a friend of mine off, and I said to him, "Wow, I just had a weird thought - The Engineers were planning on coming to destroy us 2000 years ago right? What if they're saying that the Engineers were going to come and destroy the Earth because of the crucifixion of Jesus?" Definitely pretty cool to see that I wasn't the only person who thought of that.

 Re: Prometheus trailer
but if you read the rope of silicon review zinc posted, according to the dates of the cave paintings they found to corroborate the location of lv-233, two of the paintings were done in 630 and 680 AD, suggesting that the engineers had visited the planet well after the birth and death of christ... and the engineers didn't destroy the planet during those visits.

Wow, that is some crazy theories, but I like it. Probably going to see this again for Fathers Day (my Dad made me watch Alien as a child) so I'd like to see if I can catch the little details.

Yeah, read that post too. I'm gonna go ahead and think that they overlooked the detail of the age of those 2 archeological finds, rather than thinking that my theory is wrong.

 Re: Prometheus trailer
I am so glad that I waited to check out this thread until after I saw the movie. My wife, my buddy and I went to see it this afternoon, and we had pretty much all of the same questions that were brought up here.
I expected a lot more. Oh well.

Y'know, I didn't write that stuff...someone else did, I was just pointing it out because it's interesting. Here is pictures and concept art of the monsters of the movie and a bloody awesome explanation of the new alien and shit you wouldn't have considered yet...like the fact that this new alien will get really big like the new trilobite facehugger. http://monstersandbeasts.blogspot.com.au/

 Re: Prometheus trailer
Here's another shot of Guy Pearce from one of the cut scenes... Am I the only one that thought he looked like Johnny Knoxville in old man makeup from Jackass the Movie?

 Re: Prometheus trailer
funny.... Elizabeth's SMS conversation with Engineers http://enchantedmitten.blogspot.com/200 ... eries.htmlAlso I liked the answers given here: http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.p ... 19&count=0so the Engineers are pissed we killed Christ? Q: Why do the Engineers want to kill humanity on Earth? A: The film clearly shows that Engineers created life on Earth and then guided humans throughout our development, one day hoping that we would come visit them. But we did something very bad. So bad, that it upset the Engineers. And according to the movie, whatever we did, happened two thousand years ago. The only thing that could be is that we killed Jesus, who apparently was an Engineer as well. Here is a quote from Scott: "If you look at it as an 'our children are misbehaving down there' scenario, there are moments where it looks like we've gone out of control, running around with armor and skirts, which of course would be the Roman Empire. And they were given a long run. A thousand years before their disintegration actually started to happen. And you can say, 'Let's send down one more of our emissaries to see if he can stop it.' Guess what? They crucified him."

All good stuff.
The more that I think about the movie, the more I like it.

 Re: Prometheus trailer
Just got home from watching it. So much stuff going on in my head. Need to sleep on it but initial reaction was that it was ok, not spectacular but I'm not pissed I spent money on it. It's something ill need to watch again to get a better appreciation for it.

 Re: Prometheus trailer
Saw it yesterday myself. I think people are seeing waaaaay too much into it. I mean, do you try to find deep religious meanings in 2012 or Cloverfield? Prometheus is a thriller with bits of the usual non-sensical pseudo-scifi we've come to expect in movies.
SPOILERS BELOW
Things that didn't make sense: -So this is 70 years into our future... But we already have cryogenic sleep and robots? This sort of implies a form of singularity... Which in turn would make sending actual humans on a trip like this very, very strange and cost-inefficient. I don't understand why they don't simply push dates by a few centuries in these movies... -The richest corporation on the planet (?) hires unstable sociopath scientists and crew? Who don't monitor their stranded staff in an unknown location? Who look for life, and when they find it, dismiss it as a glitch? When convinced it might indeed be there, they don't wait to see what that alien's reaction might be but send all their top-notch personnel to investigate? Really? -Geologists in charge of mapping who get lost? My iPhone could have gotten me out of there. -WINDOWS on a spaceship? -What the hell was that with the zombie? You'd assume it would be something that could be used to spread and have humans kill each other. But doesn't it feel very unefficient? -Speaking of efficiency, a FLUTE and a gazillion buttons to operate their spaceship? -Hell, even on the human spaceship, they have to push 5-6 buttons to open doors! -The classic: running opposite the rolling ship instead of sideways was nonsense. Yes, you panic, but you don't become totally stupid either. I was careful when I watched that scene because of what I read here and hell, they both look on the sides, see it's flat and clear of debris, yet they run in the path of the ship and one gets CRUSHED?? -That alien actually tracks Shaw in a matter of minutes. Yet it doesn't realize there's a big squid a few centimeters away? -I'm with whomever said that the growth of that squid doesn't make any sense. It couldn't eat anything. Carbon doesn't pop out of nowhere, unless you use a tremendous amount of energy for fusion. -And of course, Aliens with crazy gene-modifying skills, interstellar ships et al. who are BIOLOGICAL?
But overall, yeah, fun thriller.
