Post That Mini Barbie done changed the game.
What's up with all the youngsters trying to be hood stars?
It's like an epidemic of parents not knowing what to do with all their money.

Best line hands down was from Ace Hood, and Young Lyrics, "Momma need a house daddy need some shoes, they want their youngest looking fly you know whats coming soon, Hustle, Hustle, Hustle, Hard, straight A's got me getting paid on this Boulevard."

I know what the hell he's talking about and it's a good argument for forced sterilization, it's the whole parents pushing their kids to be pop stars (justin bieber) on youtube, way to be a straight up wankster trying to macaulay culkin the F out of your kids because you are abhorred by the thought of being a grown up with kids holding down a legit job

He's doing something right if he ended up on Current... That kid survived cancer and his goals are to be an artist and help other kids who have cancer, those girls I posted need to take a knee.

No, some of the best Hip-Hop ever created started around 95. Now good Hip-Hop getting radio or video play in the mainstream... that's been dead for a good while.

I thought it died in the late 90s/2000. And has been mildly resurrected the past few years. I figure it'll have another heyday eventually. I think most genres have peaks and valleys - rap just needs to find a new voice in order to become relevant/interesting again. Stuff like Das Racist, Plastic Little, Odd Future, Shabazz Palaces has been a breath of fresh air, but the first three seem a little gimmicky - don't know that they can usher in a new era.
I also think it's rare for a rapper to come out with more that two good albums - I generally find they run out of stuff to say pretty quickly.

I'm not into a majority of today's hip hop (90s gangster rap still rules), but in all honesty, for what these younglings are doing.. it's pretty good for what it is. I might not like it, but you have to give them some props.

I think that says a lot more about how sorry and childish hip hop is in its current state as opposed to these children being exceptionally gifted or talented. Mozart composed symphonies by age nine, these children are simply regurgitating jibberish and mimicking the movements of clowns.

I would have to say this about ALL music these days. When was the last album that you enjoyed the WHOLE thing? Most artists these days only got a hit or two and thats all they will produce in their whole life.

Music these days are based on hype and marketability

Fixed. But it's always been that way. And for at least the last 15+ years rap = pop, there's no denying that. You can't judge music as a whole by what's played on the radio. All you need is a catchy hook and to repeat that hook a thousand times in four minutes.

I listen to dozens of albums every year that I enjoy all the way through, but I also don't listen to pop music.

Yeah, I don't listen to an album if there are more than two songs I don't like on it. I almost always listen to albums in their entirety - no mixes, no shuffle, just the full album the way the musician(s) intended their music to be heard.

I can't stand most rap or pop. I listen to it and I can't tell if it's satirical or if these people take themselves seriously. It's so bad.

All I can say is that if you think the last 15 years of Hip-hop suck, then you must not be searching much. Sure, the mainstream rap game is sad and sorry but the underground has been amazing. Black Star, Blackalicious, Latyrx, Company Flow and all that followed, Aesop Rock, M.F. Doom, Dr. Octagon, Freestyle Fellowship... and that's just to name a few. All commercial genres are crap now. The commercially popular EDM is a joke, what passes for punk nowadays is laughable and the rock/hardcore scene is no different. Nowadays, you have to find the real music underneath the A&R's and labels. They haven't been trying to get good stuff to your ears for decades.

I agree, that was a great era - but that was pre-1999! And frankly, none of their new stuff is all that interesting.

I just saw Dead Prez, at T-rex fest and they were great, I think it's hard to accept that a younger musician has anything to offer, compared to the life experiences of bands we grew up with, but everyone has a story, the real question; Is it worth telling?

Aesop has never been sicker and Hail Marry Mallon was filthy IMO but I brought up these guys because they laid the ground work for the undergrounds return. People like Busdriver, Nocando and Lana Shea continue to push the lyricism angle while project like Diesel Truckers brings together amazing talent. Shit, even Eligh turned from a hippy to a incredible MC. There is always blood in the water and always a new kid on the scene, if your ear is to the ground. Personally I thought Mr. Muthafuckin Exquire's the Last Huzzah remix was really good and the latest work from Vast Aire, Brother Ali and Blueprint was a huge step up in their polish. There has also been a lot of subtly advanced tongue in cheek pieces that I can see a lot of people outside of hip-hop just plain not getting. I agree it's not as exciting a time as the late 90's and early 2000's but there is no lack of talent. I see more refinement at the moment than ground breaking sound but that's the normal arc. True shifts in the music don't come around every day.

Not to mention Brother Ali, Action Bronson, Danny Brown, Immortal Technique, Living Legends the list goes on and on. If you can't find good music in hip hop, and rap, your just not looking in the right direction. There was a time when anything on BattleAxe records was worth a spin.

If you want to go way back, Jan Terri was super hip.

Then I guess it just comes down to personal taste, because:

Where you may see refinement I just see rehash. The whole Solesides crew is one big yawn-fest pretty much since they changed over to Quannum - it's a shame because Latyrx was amazing when "The Album" came out. Aceyalone's first two albums were great, along with the FF, and the first Haiku d'Etat and first A-Team - but his other albums are insufferably boring (maybe a few good tracks). MF Doom - last good album was King Ghidorah or Dangerdoom. I can pretty much go down the list of all the rappers I use to listen to, and their first couple albums were great and then they just stagnate. The underground returned but then got boring and bloated and fizzled out.
But like I said - there are some newish rappers that I find interesting, it's the "old" guys I can't stand anymore. And what's coming out today just doesn't compare with what was going on in the 90s. But yeah, Exquire, Killer Mike, Shabazz, etc - there's always something tucked away during a "dormant" period.
