Thoughts on the record?

On my first listen-through, I thought it sounded more accessible and rock, less metal. Dunno if that's a good or bad thing though.

Agreed on this. It's definitely still got that Baroness sound - I always found it interesting that a guitar tone (or any musical tone) can be such a defining trademark.
I've been listening to it on NPR: http://www.npr.org/2012/07/08/156292608 ... -and-green
They touch on the fact that this album is different from their others. I'm a bit disappointed in the length - for a supposed double-album it's only 1:15. And what's with the book? I haven't got my copy yet, but it's sounding disappointing...

Upside of the new record being less metal: It made me want to go listen to Red and Blue again the past couple of days, and since it's been a while since I listened to them, they seemed fresh and new to me. :)

Fans of those two records might want to check out an instrumental metal band called Matterhorn. They only have one EP out, but they've said on Facebook that they have an LP that's finished, they just need to get it mastered. Here's a link: http://www.facebook.com/matterhorn719/a ... 8622525037

well Relapse cancelled my order because I never logged into my account to see a note from them that said they couldn't deliver to something that wasnt my billing address.

So.. now that I've heard the record. I consider it a blessing.

What's up with the book?

Only the front and back cover are done by baizely in color, the rest is b&w with the lyrics and are sketches done by someone else that I'm not familiar with.

Ugh glad I avoided buying it then. I almost did just assuming it'd be like art book of his stuff. Not that I dislike the band, but I don't need their album for $40. Especially one I'm not super into.

Plus side, though it's slightly old new, I bought the reissue of First/Second on purple vinyl and it showed today.

Personally, not really liking it just yet. It's catchy, for sure, but that's not what interests me. I'm not one of those 'every new album by every band automatically sucks,' types of dudes either -- I love the new Mars Volta, Mastodon, etc., but I'm not sure if I can get into this one. I will, of course, give it more time and several more listens before forming a solid opinion, but that's where I'm at right meow.

Also, glad as shit I did not buy the book edition vinyl now too.

Just got my copy, and while I think the book format is beautiful and would love to own more vinyl housed in books, the pages within the book are beyond lame. Relapse said that it "features" the art of Baisley and others, but I wouldn't say the art is featured...it's merely there as a tack-on.

So far I kinda dig the album(s). Certainly it's no Red or Blue. But it doesn't suck, and it could grow on me.
Interesting that you bring up Mastodon's newest release, J, as it crossed my mind when I first started listening to Yellow/Green on NPR. I guess the similarity is that both bands "toned it down" for their latest release. However, I couldn't stand listening to the Mastodon album, but as I already said I kinda like Y/G.

With ya 100% on that. Haven't been able to listen to anything since Blood Mountain.

Listened to the Yellow LP last night and it certainly does better with increased fidelity. Listening to the on-line stream really takes all the low-end out of the equation, and the music suffers because of it.
Hope to listen to Green tonight.

Anybody have a DL link? I hate when they don't provide a download code with LP purchase.

I was so psyched to get this, it finally came in the mail and 4 days later a got to listen to it.....
BOOO! I mean Blue is a near perfect rock record, and now this?!
This is the record they should of made when they were 50. Progression, transition.... I call it junk. Huge letdown.

but Im seeing Agalloch Wednesday so all is not so bad.

I loathe the song "Psalms Alive".
Yellow is okay, Green is...uh, not great.

only saw Agalloch, I don't think pallbearer played at the Cambridge show and I had no interest at all in Taurus.
2 hour set wide range of material including Faustian Echoes. Amazing sound, great show.

also as much as I hated Y/G… it's starting to grow on me…
multiple listens and an open mind

I loved the last Mastodon album as well. Haha.

Having listened to Baroness for a while, this new album is a bit of a letdown. When I got "First" I was blown away. Three songs over seventeen minutes, and I listened to it over and over. "Second" was the same way. "Red Album" was still good, although way more polished than "First" or "Second". Blue was ok. This one? Eh, I don't know. Maybe I need to listen to it some more.

Agalloch was great -- The show I just saw on Tuesday was their first ever in Florida, so that was cool. It was my second time seeing them. This time it was a little less 'special,' than the last since I didn't have to drive hundreds of miles by myself. If you're a fan, you won't be disappointed by it -- Like deadboy said, a lot of different songs spanning their entire discography. Why aren't you guys posting about this in the black metal thread!

You have to like doom-drone to be into Taurus, which I do (doom more than drone). It was alright, but I think a lot of other bands do it better (reminded me of a watered down Menace Ruine). The girl from Dark Castle does guitar and vocals for them, just her and a drummer from a defunct band I have never heard of. They put on a good show with an interesting projected film loop. I thought a lot of people would have been bored to tears when I saw them, but the crowd seemed to be pretty into it.

Pallbearer is not on this tour. Edit: On the full tour anyway. But you get to see them. You lucky fuck. Want to do me a solid and pick up a copy of Sorrow and Extinction on vinyl?

Oh, and if you are a big fan of Agalloch, I highly recommend picking up Faustian Echoes while you can. The record is already selling for 4x the price.

Bansheebot,

I was poor on Friday night or I would have gotten you that record.

I was able to pick up Pallbearer's Sorrow and Extinction and Agalloch's Fastian Echoes, both on vinyl...each was $20.

Pallbearer and Agalloch were both good. Stevie Flyod's Taurus was interesting but sort of boring overall. The Egyptian occult/art film playing behind Taurus was interesting.
