Question is. Would there be interest in toys in any medium besides vinyl? Resin, or other plastic molding? Have some ideas that I'm trying to weigh options.

the stuff that tmnt toys were made of would work if vinyl isn't a choice.

Fight Figures are vinyl figures. Otherwise they are going to end up looking like those food fighter figures, which isn't a bad thing if your going for that bootleg look.

If your going for something similar to Garg or SB, go vinyl.

EDIT: Food Fighter figures were made some a type of vinyl too, so screw it. My point is fight figure like Garg or SB sofubi or bust.

Fight figures have to do with the look, size, and progeny. I personally would buy a good figure in any medium if I liked it, and couldn't be bothered for the majority of crap people are now getting produced in the ever so haloed japanese vinyl.

But then you also have the hype machine to feed around here to keep certain people in money and others in flips.

I think one could argue, though, that the medium of vinyl is important to the fight figure. When the Fink Shit was made part of the whole reason it was done in vinyl was to give nod to vintage kaiju, one of the many factors and influences crammed into the toy. So size, look and progeny can be just as important as medium if the reason for the medium had a purpose.

I don't care though, just putting the argument out there for the hell of it.

I think there's a lot of crap made out of vinyl too. If there's no reason, why do it? In a lot of cases I don't even buy the "it looks better" argument. Not to say it doesn't have a solid look, but most of the time it's just used for marketing I feel. I think with fight figures though, there's a history.

Personally I'd like to see more independently made toys made out of blow molding or plastic. Even resin isn't very "toyish" to me. Too much like a statue. I don't care if it'd look cheaper, I just like plastic. I love weird Mexican blow molded bootlegs, I don't see enough of that.

I'm gonna side with the vinyl purist for the most part, injection PVC may yield good looking results kinda like a big battle beast but at that point your skirting onell territory

the upside to the financial feasibility of fight figs is you can reuse the body/arms if designed right
I have thought out the notion of fight figs done in the style/homage of actual pro wrestlers/firepro style wrestlers including rooted curly doll hair for some killer do's not to mention vinyl capes, masks and tassels

Resin done right can be very toyish, however I agree with you 100% on the plastic. However, in this scene people would prefer to pay a premium for crap and hype as long as it is in JP vinyl then for anything actually decent.
I buy what I like is all I was saying and don't need it to be made in JP vinyl to make that decision for me. I haven't seen a really good fight figure outside of secret base and gargamel though. Look at how bad those vinyl junkies were.

Yeah all the thoughts in this thread are ones I've been having, I'm tempted to actually go the glyos route just so they'd be durable enough to actually be played with haha.

But deep down inside I'd love vinyl. But for this project I'd likely need to do something like use Kickstarter.com Which doesn't seem to go over too well too often.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to post my very few. Very early sketches. This is really an embryo of a thought and completion would be something of a future endeavor.

Ugh so didnt have a chance to scan the second body type and other two rough characters but heres the fat boys. The tributes are obvious mostly. I just really miss being a kid and having piles of toys like tmnt, toxic avenger, Street Sharks, Biker Mice from Mars, Madball poppers, Thunder Cats, Blah blah blah. And when I see fight figures these are what I wish was done.



I feel like they're far far too detailed now. blech I'm going to bed haha.

my fight figure love harks back to my huge tmnt collection when i was a kid.
seeing these made of tmnt material would be cool if vinyl is out of reach.

I love these!! Your characters are great... but I think as-is, the body types are more suitable for TMNT scale. Just as you said, I think if you were aiming at producing fight figures, maybe tone down the overall detail a bit... and also work on a shorter, more simplified lower body design. I've never seen a fight figure with knees. For me, it's the legs that steer my vision for these characters towards action figure rather than fight figure. Not to say that you couldn't create something outside of the norm if you wanted to.

We all know that fight figures are traditionally made vinyl, but there's a difference between tradition and requirement. Could look cool either way, it's all preference. Who says you can't give an additional nod to the toys that inspire you from your childhood by using a similar material?

These look great, but to be honest don't look at all like fight figures to me. They def look like TMNT 90s etc toys and would be great in plastic as is with those designs. I just don't see the "fight" in them though.

Definitely agree with this. The drawings look fantastic - especially love the RF. But it sounds like you already realize that they're too detailed for the FF genre. Anyway - great drawings!

Yeah like I said they're rough, Since I drew them at work. Was making an attempt at fight figures if I didn't erase the gesture drawings I'd show you that I started with a more fight genre scale, bigger heads, shorter legs. I think the knee thing was honestly on over site. I guess the skullpirates tainted my vision? I got more thinking to so on this.

How's that?? Haha I don't wanna lose much detail. I imagine it being more subtle sculpted then a hard line drawing. I also realize that makes them not legit fight figures. I guess I'll call them Neo-Fight figures haha.

I believe Fight figures were originally based on a scaled up version of Gachapon Super Deformed characters whose main characteristics were short squat legs, oversized head and small chunky bodies.

The level of detailing is all subjective and as cool as Cosmo Liquid's sculpt for the Mongolion was, I never really considered it a 'Fight Figure' purely because of the proportions.

Losing the knee bend works but would say enlarging the head and feet more and reducing the leg length more might also help.

It looks like a good basis but the devil's in the detail and there's a long way between an initial sketch and me putting up $100 of my hard-earned stash to own one!

Oh I agree 100% on the feet being bigger I just traced the feet to see if losing the bent knees would help. Ill try to do some more final sketches tonight. I honestly like them more with these small changes so I'm excited to do more. Not sure id be charging quite $100 but I do intend to make them worth every penny of their price.

Excellent Griz but I wouldn't expect less. I actually prefer your initial sketches? Why fight figure? Seems like you're compromising your idea to make it a fight figure. I'd prefer these guys non fight figure and bigger. Maybe 6 or 7 inches. And I like the bent legs.
