 Re: Snoop Lion?

 Re: Snoop Lion?
Rastafarianism isn't exactly mainstream.
>I give him crebit for giving a shit about his family and the message he >presents to the world
What's the new message? Smoke even more weed?
(I'm mostly kidding...)

 Re: Snoop Lion?
"I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated," Lion said. "I feel I have always been a Rastafari. I just didn't have my third eye open, but it's wide open right now." - Interview, New York Daily News
No, he hasn't always said that he was Bob Marley reincarnated, and he never should have said such a ridiculous thing at all.
Although I try not to begrudge anyone their discovery of religion when such things happen, it's really hard to imagine a guy who in recent years has spent a lot of time paling around with Paris Hilton while shooting porno videos has suddenly become deeply spiritually inclined, I dunno...

 Re: Snoop Lion?
Can we say publicity stunt.
I can just imagine his publicist or handler or whatever the hell they call them going 'Listen, Snoopy Fizzle, I'm going to kick it real for you one time. The kids really aren't into your shit these days and we need to reach out to an older demographic while still being relevant to your pothead fanbase. I know -- REGGAE!'

 Re: Snoop Lion?
Far be it from me to make an anti-ganja statement, so please don't misunderstand this to be that, but for what it's worth there are Rastafarians who don't partake. Notably e.g. Mutabaruka, one of the great reggae poets of the '80s and beyond. As commonly as it is associated with Reggae and Rasta, the "hola herb" isn't a required sacrament. Now I feel like listening to "Lamb's Bread" by UB40 or "Legalize It" by Peter Tosh. But yeah, according to my bud who spent a lot of time around Snoop, he's in a perpetual haze of smoke. Oh well, good luck to him, whatever he may call himself.

 Re: Snoop Lion?
Definitely not, I wholeheartedly agree. By and large, Rastafarians are potheads, though. I think that can't be denied and it's fair to make that generalization. But a lot of people are potheads, so...
I don't think it's for everyone (what is?), but I love reggae -- I have since I was little and my dad turned me onto the likes of Jimmy Cliff, the requisite Bob Marley and the Wailers, Sly & Robbie and a lot of other good artists and bands. I distinctly remember going to a reggae festival in Hart Plaza in Detroit when I must have been seven or eight years old. In recent years, I have listened to a lot of raggacore (breakcore with an emphasis on ragga / dancehall samples and riddims), kind of a marrying of two genres I enjoy, so it's a natural like for me.
I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make besides that I think this whole Snoop Dogg thing is beyond ridiculous and I have zero interest in it. Aside from these posts.

 Re: Snoop Lion?
I'm told there are still great roots bands around but I mostly love the vintage stuff. I remember buying Jamaican singles at Rough Trade when it was on Grant Street in SF ... the vinyl sometimes had warps and bubbles in it which made the dub B-sides extra-surreal.

 Re: Snoop Lion?
Ayahuasca is a hell of a drug...
No in seriousness I don't know what drugs lead snoop to his new spirituality. But if it was ayahuasca that would be pretty cool. And also a drug that has a history of leading its users to change their name.

 Re: Snoop Lion?
^^ He's gotta keep the Snoop! . . . its a recognized brand now. Have you heard the promo 'La La La'? . . . I'm almost annoyed to admit its a pretty decent little reggae jam. Pretty catchy but a tad light-weight. I have a big collection of reggae / dub / ska / rocksteady and I'm not saying he's up with any of the greats in my collection but he's not shit either. He's one of those infamous characters now that can do and say all kinds of weird shit and people just roll with it. Perhaps he's finally had his fill of 'Ho's', 'Bitches' and 'Mad Scrilla' and has gone all repentant searching for spiritual 'cleansing'. Saying you are the reincarnation of an icon like Marley is so egotistical its almost crazy. You're a rapper who's just a bit bored with rapping Snoop, get over yourself! If you wanna be crazy try channeling Lee Perry! For the record, my favorite reggae artist is: Jackie Mittoo, the keyboard king of Studio One

 Re: Snoop Lion?
haha zapatoloco . . . yeah, but if anyone is 'out there' in the spiritual plane its Perry . . . or is that just the weed? I remember seeing an interview with Perry on TV and he was so stoned and red-eyed it was unreal, the phrase 'Thousand yard stare' wasn't even close to describe his eyes. Also, his Jamaican Patois was harder than normal to follow whilst his brain was probably crawling around somewhere on the ceiling of his Kingston studio

 Re: Snoop Lion?
Snoop can't be Bob Marley reincarnated because Snoop was born while Marley was still alive.
Interesting bit of Rastafari -
Sometimes called the wisdom weed, Rastas believe the marijuana plant first grew from the grave of King Solomon, who the Bible calls one of the wisest men ever to walk the planet.
Salter notes Rastas believe smoking the herb is biblically sanctioned, though he points out they believe "it is not for recreation, but a food that feeds their spirit.”

 Re: Snoop Lion?
Just listened to "La La La." The instrumental track is actually pretty great, but to hear Snoop singing in an on-again off-again Jamaican accent ... weird. Made me a little uncomfortable. But the song doesn't suck at all, which surprised me.

 Re: Snoop Lion?
People have seen this, right? http://aggronautix.com/products.cfm?productid=52I actually think proclaiming you’re Bob Marley (especially when you were born before he died) is a bit like channeling LP, in its wackiness. @ Moog, YES! Jackie Mittoo for days!!! Truly one of the under-known greats…
