They're usually the people who will get a hundred times more out of the system than they ever put into it, and it takes about twenty people who work all their life paying into unemployment without ever seeing a cent of it for them to get "their" money. Look at the numbers: someone needs to work full time for a year to be pay for someone else's two weeks of unemployment (in Canada anyway).

Half these programs I was forced to pay into I'll never see a dime out of it, yet it was all fair to tax me for them right? Medicare and SS I put into is paying for senior citizens here in the US. I was told 3 weeks ago, after answering 25 redundant questions, that I was cleared by the Nurse and brass at Cigna to move from short to long term disability....oh, and that the LT dept was getting my file...

I heard from "Jim'" my Long term rep on Monday...Soon as I was on the phone and his fake ass pleasantries were out of the way, he starts to ask me the same questions..

I answered the first one again "why can't you go back to work..." (what a joke) and then cut him off and said, Uhh, Carrie, my Short term rep said she was giving you the answers I gave her, why am i doing this all over again, after she TOLD ME, i was cleared and approved for LT disability...

No one wants to be on unemployment. It's stressful and embarrassing. Being a Union field engineer, in a country killing the Unions, I find myself "on the bench" every couple of years. That being said, the near $1000 a week in taxes they take out of my check every week takes any guilt away. I think your view is a little skewed and short sighted.

I don't know if I should let myself be dragged into this (given the insulting assumptions on myself, my family, and my nationality through pm), but I just want to say the way (un)employment insurance works is independent from taxes, both in Canada and in the US. Employers (as well as employees in Canada and three US states) pay a percentage of salaries in a separate, self-run UE pot. The money that goes in it is used to pay out people on ue. It might look to you that your taxes are paying for it, but it actually is coming directly from your employer (and yourself in Canada and three US states), based on your salary, NOT your taxes. I encourage you to look up what the percentages are in your state and see if you'll be getting or paying more into it at the end of your working life.

As to whether you or I think it's a good system, if taxes in general should pay for it, if anyone should qualify for whatever reason they're out of a job, it's a very different debate (as is no one wanting to be on unemployment. Believe me, some do). But (in Canada anyway) the system has got progressively more restrictive because of rampant fraud and that the pot was not sustainable.
