Post Question re "goop" on M1 figure...
Just received an M1 Daimon figure from a Japan eBay who regularly sells on US eBay.

When I got it, I noticed that it didn't want to come out of the bag because something was stuck... turns out the face was stuck to the bag. I was able to remove it without any damage, but noticed it kind of felt like the face had honey on it - that kind of sticky feeling.

Then I noticed that in the crack at the bottom of the neck where the head goes into the body was full of some kind of brown stuff. I was able to peel some of it away - and it was stretchy and sticky and rolled into a ball like dried rubber cement or that clear stuff they use in magazines to hold inserts in place. Doesn't smell or anything, and head seems to rotate fine, although with some resistance.

It was sold as "new with bag." It did include the bag, but both the bag and the header card looked kind of beat up. I have written the seller about this - just no word back yet.

Anybody ever experience this brown stuff before??? I think I may be able to remove all of it without a trace - for the time being I am leaving the rest of it on to show the seller.

Thanks!

Geo, that would likely be where the rubber band that M-1 used to hang the little green tag dissolved. The rubber band oxidizes after time and gets goopy. Very carefully remove the gross amount so as not to peel off any paint. Use a gentle solvent like PineSol on a Q-tip to test removing the rest of the goop.

Good luck !!...

p.s. to everyone else with any M-1 figures still in bag: open them up to remove the rubber bands and also to air them out (some of the M-1 Gold paint also tended to oxidize and turn green over time - the orange plasma Gamera is an example).

Hey, that makes sense! The "goop" is brown rubberband color. I am still going to wait to hear back from my seller before I undertake any cleaning. But thanks!!!

Yeah I had the same problem with another vinyl, but i also got that same goo on the neck, like its head came off and they glued it back in again. Is the seller kaibutsuchan?

Unfortunately, sometimes when you don't have enough room for everything, you collect first and unbag and display later ...

... And no hillsy, I will not ship them to you in the meantime so they can go on display !!!

KC, another M-1? Which figure?

All this talk about "goop" got me concerned about my own M-1's so I pulled out the box with my M-1 Daimon and yes, it has the rubber band and tag placed directly around the neck joint. The rubber band had lost its elasticity but had not dissolved into goo yet. Goopy mode might be sped up if figures are exposed to light out in the open, mine were stored in a box. I'll remove all the rubber bands tonite.

M-ICHIGO YOUKAI

The rubber band with tag was around the figure, and seem to have melted on the chest. When I look closely its all over the face and neck, like someone used rubber cement and stuffed the head in place, with some over flowing... when I turn the neck it moves like it is half stuck.

Hey, same figure! And yes, same seller.

He just wrote back with the same explanation about the rubber band, noting that these figures were made about 7 or 8 years ago. I asked him if he had a recommended way to remover the goop - but am waiting for response on that.

Anybody ever try Goo Be Gone on vinyl figures? Or rubbing alcohol?

Otherwise, I am going to try warm soapy water; and then per John's recommendation, Pine Sol.

Here are the pics from the eBay listing. If you look carefully, you can see the brown stuff in the seam around the neck. By the time it got to me, it was considerably more oozy, and was also on the face.

This IS a really nice figure. Super glow to the vinyl too.

There was also a small black scuff mark on the lower edge of the "wing" - you can see it in the pic above. That came off completely with a magic eraser.

I have lots of that black stuff under the eye bags, in parts of the feathers, will try and rub that out. Never had the time to do it.

Using hot water and dishwashing liquid, I was able to clean all of the goop off the figure. I removed the head, cleaned it with Dawn, dried it, rubbed a little high quality moisturizing lotion on the joint, and popped the head back on.

Seems good as new now, and was able to completely remove the scuff mark.

So, after a little consternation and a bit of work, back in business.

I wrote to the seller to let him know that I was satisfied, but indicated that he should have at least said something about this in the listing. He told me that he took the figure out of the bag to take the picture - and the small neck tag was stuck to the inside of the bag with no trace of the rubber band - he had to have been aware of this condition. However, I have never had a problem from him before, and will buy from him again because he offers some great figures, typically at good prices.

Hello Geo,
that M1 Diamon figure IS a really nice one. Kaibutsuchan is usually a good seller, and offers pretty good pics. However, at times he does exaggerate the condition of some of his items. I usually try to confirm condition before a purchase to force him to take a second look and relay any additional info about it.

Well, to give him the benefit of the doubt, I believe this was a "new" figure. And I can understand why he wants to take something out of the bag to take a picture. But if he does take it out of the bag, he should be even more careful about how he describes the "condition."

I bought a new Medicom figure recently but it has been opened and played with. The seller gave me a good sizable chunk of refund.
