Why would any artist make a deal to have his toy made, when he doesn't get access to his own work at cost? The cheese is old and moldy... Could you please pass the blame...

I love blank vinyl and mixed parts toys. I have been trying to stay out of this thread because what Skinner does is absolutely up to him. I can say if these were the price of a painted run(even $100) I would jump on them instantly, but at this price I'd rather buy a few other toys and be happy. These could have easily been all painted as 1 offs and sold for $250-300 and no one would complain. I just feel that the hype/rarity of blank and mixed vinyl is what is driving this release. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't feel like much thought went into it. The color choices made available aren't a great mix(yes they are great individual colors) so I'm not particularly inclined to buy them because of that.

Ribbon Controller: I agree the money does go to the artist which is awesome, but they are also coming directly from him so it looks bad on his part for the higher mark up(even if he isn't getting them at the best price).

Russblue: Maybe the bootlegs were overpriced too. Other mixed parts have been really nicely priced Sludge DX for $75, Boss Carrions $100.

^ agree with you David. The other concern is that this price point could potentially inflate the price of all Bog standard releases, both at retail and on the secondary market.

Welcome to the real world bud, unless you make the toy yourself you don't get as much freedom and payment as you think.

I also want to clearify that I'm not sticking up for the price, I have no clue why it is what it is. Just offering another scenario.

I'm not too convinced this single occurence will drive up demand. If anything it may alienate bog collectors unfortunately..

And the comment about unmixing the mixed parts. You can't because the ears are glued to the head and they're different colors. Unless you want a solid colored figure with mixed ears.

<SPECULATION> Yeah I keep forgetting that it was a lulubell x Shikaruna Joint, still if a toy is based on an artist's work, that artist should reserve rights for as much access to it as whatever parent company is producing it. For Skinner to have to pay as much for a blank, as a completely painted product, seems somewhat far reaching, then again, I don't know if the Japanese put as much as an emphasis on paint, as we do (plus I have no idea what the yen to dollar ratio is these days). <SPECULATION>

Im sure he is not paying retail ($85 for a painted one) but its very possible he is not getting them at cost. I dunno what cost is but When the bog was originally released by DKE at SDCC they only paid "wholesale" to Lulu which was $42.50 per figure and luke/amy had to be making something off of that still. So cost is probably half of that? ...I cant imagine that skinner has to pay anymore than wholesale. Skinner has released AT LEAST 3 painted editions this year and now these mixed parts, thats a decent amount of pcs IMO.

I know jvinyl/sofubi/kaiju is different but to give some perspective in the western vinyl toy industry when u make a toy with a company you as the artist get only a set number of "APs" per color, which im sure varies per company and/or possibly an exclusive colorway to sell directly. After that, no access at all. And Im sure the artists are still paying wholesale on a exclusive color run

Well in the western toy scene most artists are getting paid in figures and notoriety but it also depends on who you are.
Baseman, Kozik, Hedi Kinney and I'm sure other more well know artists, if they're savy and in demand, are getting royalties in addition to samples. Regardless, every contractual relationship with an artist and toy-maker could pretty much run the gambit and go every which way.

Aren't the "wing ears" on the head glued on? How will people trade that? Interested to see if solids come out of this for sure.
