Re: How many sofubi figures do you own?
Admittedly, when I first read the poll question, for some reason, it registered as "how many modern sofubi figures do you own?" It took reading the first couple posts for me to recognize finally that the question referred to ALL sofubi. But clearly this bias exists for others too, because a bunch of folks have posted their vintage counts versus their modern counts. Further, someone mentioned posting glowie counts versus clear counts versus...whatever...so other sorting methods are on people's minds.
But the thing that fascinates me is that no one so far seems to have mentioned dividing their counts by licensed character toys versus designer (or even bootleg) ones. THIS, to me, seems to be the most logical way to breakdown one's collection...and certainly the most *useful* way to communicate what one has/collects to other collectors.
Like, you can have a collection of modern Bear Model Ultraman kaiju or you can have vintage Popy Toho kaiju toys...and that's meaningful to tell another collector who doesn't know what sort of shit you have. Of course, you can also say that you have "designer" (for lack of a better term) Japanese sofubi, ranging anywhere from modern Blobpus or Secret Base toys to vintage Marusan originals or bootleg hero figures.
...Just something interesting I observed...

At this point in my collecting (40-50 toys) which pretty much amounts to dabbling in a variety of things that have attracted me, I've realized that i need to have some form of gameplan to control my finite cashflow vs want of endless amounts of awesome toys old and new. Lately, I find myself constantly thinking: Do i focus on multiples of a few sculpts i love? Do i force myself to buy only one version of a piece and move on? Do i only collect what I can complete? Or only spend xx amount per item?
Deciding on how and what to collect is almost an ongoing compulsion in itself, never-mind the actual collecting. I'd be interested to hear thoughts from members who reached that crossroads in their collection where they had to focus, or simply give up trying to focus, and what decision-making went into that. Having the same problem as we speak... I have exactly 82, which is only a little higher than i would have expected. This includes micros, and small items like grody heads.

Re: How many sofubi figures do you own?
I do not own nearly enough toys. I do not even own a detolf. So sad. I'm trying to step it up but everything has gotten so expensive in the past few years. Bemon blew the roof on everyone's budgets so now we've all adapted & accept these higher prices as the new norm for what is acceptable to charge for retail releases.

Hey Sanjeev, in fact that's how I split my collection. Licensed figures outweighs patchi 6:4.

Re: How many sofubi figures do you own?
While a poll of course has to be pretty open ended, the sorting criteria Sanjeev mentions is why I want to have a decent catalog of my collection in the first place. It's pretty bare bones now, but eventually I hope to have everything listed with the release date, material, paint style, franchise, repro info, etc. so Ill be able to have various stats available to me.

I didn't post this in "whatever". I was going to, but the description says, "anything but toys" and this was a question about Japanese toys, so I put it here.

Re: How many sofubi figures do you own?
I started counting just mini figures and got to 200 and stopped. It really makes me stop and think every time I start trying to figure out how many I have. Been trying to focus and the bad economy has really slowed me down.

Re: How many sofubi figures do you own?
I've never counted my collection . . . and now i have. Sticking to strictly 'Made in Japan' toys of all sizes I have 350, which surprised me. This is probably down to the fact i've never sold anything i've bought . . . . yet!

Re: How many sofubi figures do you own?
I'll try a fun exercise: I estimate my collection at 2-300. In a month or so, I'll unpack and know for real. Will be interesting to see what it boils down to...

Re: How many sofubi figures do you own?
Like many others I have more than I expected. I thought I'd come in under 50, but I broke 60 without trying to figure out what's boxed up. So now I'd estimate that I have around 75.

Regardless of whether it's a shitty economy or hipsters moving on like locusts to some other not- mainstream thing...sofubi buying is in the shitter. Just ask any toy makers in Japan--patchi or licensed. They're ALL hurting. Or have already gone out of business. chimmychazz wrote: So just went and did a count, 223 total here are some of the stats: 50 - licensed (vintage & reissue) 36 - glow in the dark 8 - unpainted 5 - godzillas That last stat's what really counts! LOL I have 12 Godzilla's, 4 of which are vintage. As for the rest of my collection, roughly 12% are patchi (all modern, incidentally, though a couple are reissues of vintage sculpts) and 40% are vintage.

I wasn't saying that it's bc of hype or anything just that people started paying a lot more for toys on the aftermarket & at retail for Bemon in particular a few years ago, so since then people have gotten used to spending more on toys kinda collectively in the past few years. Higher retail prices seem reasonable due to increasingly higher resell values. So the resell values appear to be setting the standards for retail pricing. I think I said that right.

15, and I'm looking to sell about 8 of them! I like to keep the collection small and usually focused on a theme that I really like. I'm mostly looking for brightly coloured RxH minis at the moment.

Re: How many sofubi figures do you own?
another reason the collection is small. I can't look at my shelf and feel good about $1000 i spent on just a handful of toys. I'll splurge on something i think is really great (I couldn't possibly afford 2nd hand) or i've been after for a while (if it's affordable) I get paid by the hour! I've learned to enjoy what this hobby has to offer with flickr.

I think you said that right, too. I just still don't agree! Sure, what you're describing is quite true for a select few brands, but for the majority of toy makers (both licensed folks like M1, Marmit, and Marusan *and* non-licensed patchi/"designer/whatever folks), sales have been deflating for a couple years now. As a result, a lot of sofubi makers have shrinking production runs (hence higher aftermarket prices)...and ultimately increasing retail prices. EVERYBODY is hurting. :/

Re: How many sofubi figures do you own?
This is a really cool and interesting topic. Im still new here, been lurking since mid 2012. I counted last night and im at 96. Its interesting to me to see how I have started to get focused based on things that I like, and how realizing that a game plan is indeed necessary to avoid having a little of this and a little of that. Not that there's anything wrong with that ...
