This photo makes me simultaneously both incredibly happy and sad.

Here is an interview Roger Ebert gave with the CBC two years ago. It is worth noting beyond being a movie critic, how he was a normal, approachable guy, who really made a name for himself on his own merits and even with all he had to face (especially in recent years) managed to always be relevant. Like or hate him, that kind of legacy is really something.

Herzog on Les Blank, just posted by the Criterion Collection.

Also, while I would not consider myself a fan as such, there was definitely something to be said for those beach bonanza videos of their place and time. Like early westerns, so many 'tropes' and things people use come from these early films, and the people using them often don't even realise it.

I felt like I got to know Mr. Ebert all over again during the past few years because of his remarkable activity on Twitter. The man was so much more than a movie reviewer. He was strongly opinionated and righteously so on a number of matters pertaining to individual liberty and human dignity. He and his wife Chaz were clearly dedicated and deeply in love. If anything, Mr. Ebert's illness seemed to make him a stronger individual, more outspoken, more accessible, more humane. He wasn't above reconsidering old opinions and changing his mind about movies that didn't sit well with him at first. It's strange how adversity can sometimes put us more in touch with our own humanity, but it's a story told countless times. He was a real inspiration and I'm one of the many who will miss him.
