I don't really upload that much every month so it might be the way to go. Don't know how pics get archived though. Trying to wrap my head around moving years worth of photos somewhere else makes my brain hurt... my biggest fear is all the broken links here on SB if everyone starts deleting accounts..

 Re: New Flickr
I should take a look at 500px too.
I've been using a freeware program called Photo Grabbr to download all my photos full size. It works really well.
Once i've finished doing that i can relax because Flickr will no longer hold them hostage. To be honest my account needed tidying up and re-arranging anyway. I'm almost looking forward to a fresh start away from that new eye-sore of a site.
Bit of a pain in the arse but compared to 'real world' problems its nothing to get my knickers in a twist over.

I can't help but feel like some of you guys are being too alarmist about the changes. Flickr is going to be fine. The things that are broken will be fixed, other than the new layout. Yahoo has owned Flickr for a couple years now, so I don't think them changing the model of pro vs. free accounts is going to change anything as far as them "owning" your content goes.

Think of the hundreds of photos you two have embedded in the site over the years. I really hope you guys will reconsider. I dont love the new flickr but moving everything off (IF a good alternative is found) doesnt sound too practical.

Why should i care about a website who gives not one flying-fuck about my preferences? They don't give a shit about the people who made them the giant they are today. Fuck 'em.

 Re: New Flickr
Well don't worry too much Jonathan. I'm extremely lazy by nature, and the thought of having to move and relink all those photos is enough to make me sit on it for a bit. I care about SB to the point where I found almost all of my old photobucket blank links and relinked them through flickr. Nothing worse than a dead link. The outrage over new flickr is starting to gain some media traction (I just saw a cnet article) with direct quotes from that flickr help forum post. Will flickr give us options to customize the look again? That remains to be seen. As much as the new look bothers me, my main issue is how they intend to use the photos. If its just a continuation of using the tag data for their search engines I have no real issue with that. I might even be able to live with it just being a photo dump site, if they don't give me customization option (revert back to the old look) and move on with the main use being a teenage instagram duck lip self pose site. What will make me surely leave though if they try to claim some kind of ownership on anything you post. Nothings been said about that but you never know right? After what happened on instagram it makes me wary. organic_addict wrote: Can anyone tell me how to post one of my photos on SB? Click on the photo you want to use. in the lower right hand corner you'll see a icon shaped like a rectangle with a curved arrow on the top. Click on that and the link should come up. Remember for this site to grab the BBCode.

I can always ask to get the "retro advert" thread deleted and then start a replacement and re-link all the images. I'd rather do that than stay with Shitr

 Re: New Flickr
instagram completely backtracked on its idiotic "ownership" claim, i believe. i don't recall yahoo or flickr ever overstepping their rights to content ownership in all these years. who knows what the brave new web will bring in terms of control and privacy, though.
what's funny is that there have been thousands upon thousands of complaints from folks who were angry about how staid and un-forward-thinking flickr had become. a drastic change was the only way for flickr to remain relevant to the general user population. either doing something or doing nothing was going to trigger a negative reaction. they are acutely aware of the problems, so let's give them a moment to assess and begin repairs. all those flickr engineers aren't blind or stupid.
moving to an alternative does not guarantee you anything other than the satisfaction of saying "screw you" to flickr. in the end, it only creates more work and headache for yourself.
as others have mentioned, it would be a shame to see entire chunks of sb's rich photo content disappear in a blink. to anyone who is ready to abandon flickr, please reconsider!

^ You are a wise man ! I think I'll wait until my pro account runs out in august and see if I delete it or not then. I don't think I'll go with any alternatives - I will just delete the fuck out of everything (yahoo mail included) and forget about it. More time for me

 Re: New Flickr
It's mixed feelings for me with this new look flickr. I've always thought the photos on flickr to be the main focus and the comments and social element of the site secondary. The old layout was beginning to feel a bit dated and clunky. I kind of like the fact that they've made photos the focus in the redesign.
But then it seems like the flickr designers missed a golden opportunity to really break out from this homogenised interface of most social websites. Good idea, just really poor execution. Hopefully they can react positively and listen to the feedback of their users.
Sucks that I just renewed my pro just last month. Thinking of converting back to free and wait out to see if they are really serious about improving the experience.

 Re: New Flickr
I am having a horrid time with it. Its just not very streamlined and quite frankly it looks clustered as heck.
I enjoy looking at a pic and not having to click it unless I want bigger sizes, now I have to click it because the other crap floating around really detracts from my enjoyment of the picture.
It sounds like whining, but after some time, clicking the back button over and over gets really tiring.

 Re: New Flickr
I like it - looks much better.
I think the most obvious explanation for changing the layout to click through to the next photo is to increase the traffic numbers for advertising.

 Re: New Flickr
I think they should put back the "Recent Activity" feature on the landing page somewhere, instead of having to click into the menu just to check who said what.
Also, I am curious as to what the experience is like with the ads. I think I've seen an image that shows a camera ad next to somebody's photo stream, which is perhaps not that bad.
Otherwise, the design changes are fine with me, but there are still inconsistencies all over the place. That ubiquitous (...) menu is sometimes a hover-triggered, other times it requires an explicit click. A person's buddy icon should have remained that drop down everywhere it's displayed as it is (was) when looking at an individual's picture/comment.
My personal beef has actually to do with my favorite Chrome extension that allowed me to hover over thumbnails and pop-up a larger image to see better. It stopped working shortly after the site updates were introduced. My hope is the extension maker gets around to find a fix for it.
Oh yeah, and I still can't change a set's default sort order. New pics are still put at the end and I have to manually resort for "Newly added". WTF?!

I'm with the unhappy people... Thinking about going elsewhere but also I'd rather go to a site where most SBs are going so I can at least have a small part of what I had in flickr.

Why don't you guys just buy webspace. Then you can make it look like whatever you want, upload as much as you want, have as much space as you want, and name it whatever you want. While you're at it, watermark every photo you take so if it shows up on another site without your permission, you can call them out.

So it's not OK to be unpleased with a service I'm paying for? I guess it doesn't matter if I pay it here or somewhere else but it's not just money, it's time spent uploading, tagging, messaging. gatchabert wrote: Why don't you guys just buy webspace. Did I ever say that it is wrong to be displeased? If anything, I am listing a very viable alternative in which you have more control of than trying to look for another hosting site...but rather than read that...
