 Re: New Flickr
I don't know if this is necesarry Other than that, I guess you're right, except for the fact of the extra work which I will have to do no matter where I move.

 Re: New Flickr
emotes are a necessity I'll even make it easier for you guys: http://www.consumer-rankings.com/hosting/You could probably even ask folks on here to help design the page. I'll probably keep my flickr page and continue to use, and why not...1TB of space for free and I just upload through my phone either via Instagram or just straight from the phone. I don't really care for how it looks right now but it works fine for me.

 Re: New Flickr
I like your DIY spirit Bert, but as satisfying as a DIY photo archive might be on one level, it wouldn't generate anywhere near the same volume of features, potential views from keywords, casual browsers etc., or have the same "social" options. Someone recently contacted me at Flickr to ask permission to use one of my illustrations in a book he's preparing ... that probably wouldn't have happened at a less-trafficked site. I know this is curmudgeonly, but I really don't like the "wall" approach to image display (unless I'm at Tumblr or a blog and someone has done an eye-pleasing job of it) which seems to be encroaching at numerous venues, or the fact that a lot of features seem to be less usable or harder to find now than previously. Having worked in tech as you do, I'm well aware that these are the sorts of attitudes that inevitably comes with site changes, and that many people "get over" with time after an initial phase of bitching and whining. In this case for some reason, I'm just not inclined to do the homework needed to figure out the new site navigation, but that doesn't mean I'm going to pick up all my toys and go home. I just think it could have been rolled out better with respect to customers and functionality. While I'm rambling ... as regards images disappearing from Skullbrain, there's already been so much of that, mostly as a matter of expectable attrition over time ... it's sort of a shame, though. As just one example, there's a lot missing from the early chapters of the "RxH Collections" thread that would probably fascinate/educate more recent collectors of the line.

 Re: New Flickr
Flickr has slowed down significantly. I am having difficulty switching from the home page to my stream. I wonder what's going on?

Oh and I lost all my tags for a majority of my pics. Some groups shots I had over 50 tags...thanks a lot Flickr! Real smooth migration.

This is true, but if all you want is a place to store your pics so you can post them, why not go DIY? Share the cost with a few other folks and you're all set to upload.

^ for those folks, dropbox would be perfect. or any one of the numerous dropbox-like file storage & sharing services that don't rely on a browser-based ui.
for even more control, a nas with a public share via dyndns, static ip, or whatever external network access mechanism provided. no more reliance on megacorp, no ads, no change. ever. done.

 Re: New Flickr
^ the truly offensive part of that is the use of verdana instead of helvetica keep fighting the good fight! at the very least i hope they'll turn on the old layout options so we have a choice of presentation styles and lighter-weight pages. my biggest gripe now is the loss of pagination. it makes for difficult spacial memory recollection since all context has been removed.

 Re: New Flickr
By now you might have seen that there are a lot of articles on the 'net about this mess, but the one at Gizmodo appears to be the Grandaddy. How Yahoo Killed Flickr and Lost the Internet

 Re: New Flickr
That was actually a great article, and sums it all up - if a bit light towards the end on how outraged the community of users actually are now. From a business perspective the path for flickr seems clear; it is now a matter of whether they see that or not.

That article was written before the most recent changes were announced, I believe.

Yes, but it offers an great view of the back story without veering too far into "those idiots!" territory. Several of the articles about the most recent changes referred or linked to the Gizmodo article, which is why I shared it here ... it's more substantial than a lot of the complaint articles out there, and I hoped it might be of interest to some. Although admittedly I haven't spent more than about ten minutes scanning the Help Forum at Flickr, several members are claiming that the management isn't responding at all to complaints or questions. I find that a little difficult to believe, but if it's true, maybe the Flickr staff is in "wait and see" mode. (?)

Seems Yahoo's been trying to become relevant again. While I'm still not upset over the redesign, it seems flickr is being positioned for a tumblr integration of some sort, aimed at mobile / tablet users. The way flickr is flipping off pro users is probably indicative of not having learnt a damn thing from those events in the Gizmodo article and they're bound to get same results as before.

So yeah...so far it's just me and Nate/Maddie. Are we suppose to give you guys a report or something?

 Re: New Flickr
Just had a look at your profile Bert. It does look very similar to the old flickr. I am hesitant to start creating all new profiles on all these other alternative sites, but if we (being the general SB community) can collectively agree on one that seems to work well, then I am all for it.
I think we are just in the gray area of the transition now where folks (myself included) are not sure which way to go one way or the other.

What's the link Bert? I'm eager to move. I can't handle how slow flickr is and can't find anything like I use to.

 Re: New Flickr
Looks good. I like the simple clean layout, just like flickr use to have. OK so can I migrate 4000 photos over for free ?

 Re: New Flickr
Question for anyone that has tried it. If you use your flickr login, does that mean it automatically transfers you flickr profile and pics? (I highly doubt it, but this would sure make the decision to switch easy ).

 Re: New Flickr
that article brought up a funny point that me and a friend were talking about, boxes of photos, where the writer thinks they are novel and kinda meh, we both drew the conclusion that photo albums(the real kind with photos in them) need to make a comeback

Just got my ipernity account and no, it doesn't work this way... Added Bert and Nate&Maddie... who's next?
