 Re: Edward Snowden NSA whistleblower
During the student strike last year we learned that Facebook would give free access to any account to the police without requiring any sort of warrant. The police call, they open the door. Not surprised at all by these recent developments. I also recall reading about most of this in the Wired article.

If anything changes, it will be because American companies are pissed off at losing business. http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2013/06/prism/

 Re: Edward Snowden NSA whistleblower
Some rambling thoughts in response to "the latest..."
Snowden says: "when NSA makes a technical mistake during an exploitation operation, critical systems crash." What specifically was that in reference to? Unless he talks (and presumably, tells the truth,) we'll never know the specifics of what this is supposed to refer to. Whose critical systems? What errors?
He also claims "the US Government is not going to be able to cover this up by jailing or murdering me. Truth is coming, and it cannot be stopped."
That appears to suggest that he has contingencies in place for ongoing revelations should he be apprehended. Similar claims were made in defense of Wikileaks prior to the criminal charges against Julian Assange ... the intended impression was that Wikileaks' operations were distributed internationally such that should Assange or other core operatives be taken out, the operation would continue. As it turns out, the operation was much smaller than originally believed. Numerous rumors about pending revelations regarding the banking industry, covert military campaigns and even governmental knowledge of UFO investigation and discovery were floated, but unless I've missed them, no such disclosures of an unusually surprising nature have occurred since Assange's arrest. My point is that Snowdon may be engaging in exaggerated bluster or even bluffing. He may also, from his perspective, be telling the truth, but that doesn't necessarily mean that any "Plan B" will effectively take place should he be stopped. It just seems unlikely to me that he'll continue to get away with the current arrangements for too long, given the reach of the people he's managed to anger.
At least he has succeeded in raising awareness and putting important questions on the table.

I don't know..and maybe it's just me but I just assumed the government was doing this anyway. Internet/Phone records etc. Since the digital age everything is getting recorded and stored somewhere. There is always a trail.

From working in government, I frequently see that people in power, decision makers, tend to have really inaccurate understanding of technology. Either they assume that everything is possible, or they can't conceive that even simple things are possible. So they might not assume that mass scanning and archiving of data is occurring, becasue they have a model in their mind like people would have to do all that work rather than machines. These issues that Snowden has brought up may actually have been news to people who make decisions and a large part of the public as well.
