A black proto has traditionaly been the first release of a sculpt. Not always though, but often.

and why are some ridiculously hard to get (Madball) and some realtively easy to get (SKullbrain)?

I am just making myself feel better. I dropped $300 on this figure for Frank and by the time it got here he was in sell off mode. Anyone want to buy a madball for $300?
