 Gravity
I have to admit I'm really intrigued about seeing this even though I'm not a big Bullock fan. Visually it looks stunning in the previews but I have been fooled before (i.e. Prometheus). Without giving too much away has anyone seen it? Worth it?

Just for that alone I want to see it.

 Re: Gravity
Prometheus was good up until about mid way through then it just became a mess of: "how do we tie up all these loose ends?" At least that's what I recall, it's been awhile but I remember not liking it. I have no doubts Gravity will look great visually, nor do I think the characters will make it (always good to go with the non happy ending IMO)- but I just want to be left really feeling the hopelessness of it all. If the movie can convey that I'll be happy. It's weird before I even knew this movie was coming out I was having bizarre dreams of being in deep space lost- very abyssal. I want that feeling from this movie.

 Re: Gravity
The movie was very good. Anxiety the entire way through the entire movie, nothing was predictable. If you can see it in IMAX, I can imagine it would be even better just due to the stunning visuals.

 Re: Gravity
Surprisingly I was really impressed with this movie. Definitely suggest seeing it, even if everything about it is unrealistic. Was happy they kept it short and didn't drag it out.

 Re: Gravity
Gravity does look pretty interesting conceptually and I like a lot of Cuarón's films. However, my barometer towards recent sci-fi movies is pretty high after seeing "Moon" with Sam Rockwell. That was an amazing sci-fi film!
The effects do look pretty intense in Gravity but I can only take so much of CG visuals, especially if done poorly. I realize it'll be hard to avoid with the back drop but I am looking forward to checking it out. And from what little I've read, Bullock is suppose to be pretty good in it.

Just saw it, and loved it! I'm surprised I have any fingernails left, because I was biting them through the entire film.

 Re: Gravity
Just saw it in IMAX 3D and was blown away!
My only complaint is that is was a fun movie to see in the theaters, but can't imagine ever watching it again at home.

 Re: Gravity
I saw it last night in 3D at an iPic theater with fully reclining seats which made it a more immersive experience. The story itself is not especially good and the dialogue is cliched and cheesy at times but visually it is the most stunning thing I've ever seen at the movies. It's an absolute must see in a theater with the full-on 3D effect.

 Re: Gravity
I just saw it today with the gf, and it's a visual masterpiece. elegant, simple, facing some stark truths about humanity, and honestly makes space more real and terrifying than most movies i've seen. not really a sci-fi movie, more of an existential slice of life.
i want to go see this again in 3D. It looks like it would be even more amazing visually.
highly recommended, and another excellent notch in alfonso cuaron's belt.

 Re: Gravity
So from what I'm hearing IMAX is the best bet? As it happens there is an IMAX theater showing it 5 minutes from my school, so I'm think maybe I'll slip over there in between classes this week lol.

 Re: Gravity
I was really looking forward to this. And I would recommend it. But, I was a little disappointed. It was good, but it was no Moon. I wasn't filled with anxiety like I thought I would/should have been. It was very light on story. But it did look good - the zero-g they achieved was very believable. I hope Europa Report delivers more than Gravity did.

 Re: Gravity
I saw this last night and I loved it. The back and forth between hope and despair was a lot of fun. And since no one has done it yet, my recommendation is that it was "out of this world."

Wow talk about a bad day in space! The movie really earns its namesake. Definitely recommended, definitely go see it in IMAX.

 Re: Gravity
Lots of reviewers seeming to miss the point despite generally favorable reviews. Sure, the "story" is thin, but this is clearly supposed to be a pure cinematic experience of a sort never accomplished at this level with this subject before. I love that Alfonso Cuarón has a generally low opinion of 3D in film ... that inspired him to work to achieve a degree of thoughtfulness and finesse using the gimmick such that it became integral to the experience of the film in a way that matters, rather than an "enhancement" or ... a gimmick. And the meaning of the film isn't exactly mysterious. The prologue text gives it away: Life is impossible in space. The movie is about human endurance and the fact that life (or any given environment) never stops throwing obstacles at us, yet sometimes, we endure and prevail. Maybe it's such a simple theme that it flew over the heads of the critics. This is not a film to view on your smart phone.

 Re: Gravity
i think i'll see it eventually...i love to see how filmmakers attempt to depict life (or death) in space. on that note, i was home sick from work yesterday and took in "europa report." a pretty worthwhile 90 minutes...

Eh - the experience wasn't as satisfying as I had hoped. Because of that it needed more story to make up for not making me feel like I was alone, and about to die, in space. The terror just wasn't there. Also - poor casting. They should have gone with lesser-known or unknown actors. Constantly being aware of Bullock and Clooney probably had something to do with me feeling a disconnect between myself and the characters. Now I need to watch Sunshine, Moon, and 2001 (along with Europa Report) to get my space-fix.

 Re: Gravity
Yeah, a lot of people saying that it wasn't as substantial as they'd hoped. That's the problem with overhyping films (although in this case, the hype has been "viral" coming from the festival screenings, as opposed to studio-powered over-hype.)
And while I thought Clooney was fine, mixed feelings about Bullock. Her big "I'm acting!" scene definitely elicited sympathy for me, but I felt like I was watching Sandra Bullock instead of a professional astronaut. Still, enjoyed it for what it is.

---NT--- wrote: Now I need to watch Sunshine, Moon, and 2001 to get my space-fix. Ha! I own all three of these. I'll definitely be adding Gravity to them whenever it comes out on DVD. I agree with the story being kind of thin, but I think (like Dean said) it was more about the experience of the film and human endurance. This was the first film I've ever viewed in 3D. While I'll still maintain that's a bit of a gimmick (although it did add to this film) IMAX certainly made Gravity very worthwhile. I definitely developed sweaty palms on many of those sequences where the characters almost drift away from any object they tried to grab on. It was nerve wracking to watch and even though I know almost inhumanly possible still enjoyable. This is coming from a guy who really hates CGI also
