Post Sort of Surprised
I'm kinda' surprised no one posted a RIP Nelson Mandela thread here. I know people have complained in the past about the RIP threads and I personally can see the value in that opinion, but just sorta surprised... Would be foolish to assume everyone missed the news of his passing. I just feel the mans accomplishments far outweigh those who are normally tossed around here and not even a peep. Maybe I'm wrong :?

I know that I legitimately missed the news, as I've been holed up ill at home with no TV.

Goodbye Mr. Mandela. As a kid in the early '90s you were an inspirational example of what could be possible in politics, even before I got older and learned how rare a politician you really were.

I am lucky enough to have watched his man become my president.
It's impossible to overemphasize his effect on South Africa. Wish i was back home right now for what i can imagine will be a powerful time in the collective conscious.

His autobiography 'A long walk to freedom' is well worth a read. I only wish today's world leaders would act more like Madiba.

Post Re: Sort of Surprised
Well, to be honest, I did consider starting one yesterday, but there were several reasons I thought better of it. One of the contributing ones was, as you said, there has been some mixed reactions to threads like the memorials and birthdays, but personally, given all the other random thoughts that get thrown out on here, I don't see a problem with it. People can always choose not to read them, but I can understand how some folks want to minimise forum clutter. Anyhow, I won't get into the other considerations, as this should really be about the man.

Suffice it to say that, as expected as it might have been, and while he was able to lead a long and incredibly full life, it is still sad to mark the passing of such a man. I don't want to get into all of his contributions to history and humankind, there are many other sources for that. I just want to say how remarkable his legacy is. We have seen very few like him in our lifetimes. May his name stay known to everyone, and we all continue to live according to his messages. RIP Madiba.
