It wigs me out that I first saw them perform almost TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO!

Thanks for the linkage.

Man I am kicking mahself for missing out on this one. "De la Soul is Dead" is in my top five favorite hip hop albums of all time. Timeless stuff. Excellent taste in toys and music, Deadbone!

for me, my favorite de la material was all the additional content on the 12"s.

I have the links for the first 2 albums, I will see if they still work mr. beverage.

Missed the giveaway, but hoping that it opens more ears on to De La's music... especially the younger heads who only know whatever passes for "rap" these days.

My personal fave will always be "3ft High". The production on that album still stands the test of time 25 years later. 3ft was certainly one of the first (in a long history) of rap albums to come under legal fire for sample infringement. It seems lingering copyright issues were another factor in DLS released all their music free yesterday...

"De La Soul is Dead" was a solid follow up, and probably some of the best satire and social commentary to ever grace a rap album.
It was one of the first to pepper skits between tracks, an idea that worked for well for the album, then (unfortunately) became a trend lasting for years to follow on more albums than I care to count... *ahem* Redman I'm talking to you :x

De La Soul was promoting positivity, tolerance, respect, and enlightenment at a time when hip hop was still finding itself. Sadly rapping about money, guns, drugs, and disrespecting women became the benchmark and the "D.A.I.S.Y. Age" never came to fruition.

I never really understood why A Tribe Called Quest broke through, while De La Soul was left behind. I'm glad they're still around although I admittedly began to lose touch after Buhloone Mindstate (which was another solid album in its own right). Damn, would've been nice to get another copy of that one...

*DING*
Now don't forget to turn the page in your De La Soul Read-Along Storybook

Agreed, I much prefer De La to Tribe. I think De La Soul was a little edgier, a little weirder and willing to take more risks than Tribe. I find most of Tribe's work a little too innocuous for me to really get into. I like it but not that much. I think that is why Tribe gained so much more mainstream recognition. More mass appeal=less interesting music IMHO.

These guys never made a single bad album. Been listening to the whole catalog in chronological order. Amazing to revisit. Even the earliest material has aged incredibly well. Here's hoping their career reboot goes well.

In a nutshell, I'd say that's pretty accurate. While DLS & Tribe were both "positive" rap acts, the former was the real envelope pusher...

The brilliance of "De La Soul is Dead" is that the group was all-too-aware of how the tide of hip hop was turning. But instead of changing their style to appeal to the masses, De La stayed the course and made a spot-on satire of the sad direction that the music and culture was heading toward. That's where my real admiration for the group stems from...

The difference in tone between the 1st and 2nd albums is worlds apart. "3ft" was pushing hard for positive change, and "DLS is Dead" was a eulogy for their effort.

Much thanks to those who offered me the links to download, and for sharing the YouTube vids.
